I went up this road in the 70's with my Dad, mum, and wife. They were still sluicing for gold in the Shotover river below us. what an adventure.

Went thru here back in the early fifties with my Dad in his Buick. Was about 12yrs and was absolutely terrified. Just a bit of a track back then. Just as scary now. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you so much for this drive Geoff! Been wanting to do it since I knew about it.. Only worry is that my LandCruiser is 3200kg.. 200KG more than the limit of that bridge.. =(

Been there 10 years ago with a beaten up FWD station wagon. I'm still sweating some of these sections.

My favourite bit was where another car was coming down. There are some places on that road where I really would not like to have to reverse to the nearest passing point...

K, that was cool. I actually grabbed some popcorn for the show! For awhile there I thought it was one way (certain times of day one way or the other) but obviously not. The first car you met - lucky at the fork in the road. Do both choices there lead to the finish line? Or only one way to the end? If not, how would you ever turn around. K, so where too next?

@geoffmackley Didn't look like you needed 4wd or high clearance at any point, would you agree? I'm heading out there in January and might risk it with a rental.

. Breathtaking indeed...but I am missing something - I can see cautious & adventurous but the bridge seems safer than many in mountains of S America - though absolutely wonderful landscape! Would not want to need motor club assistance - I wonder about phone reception...quite remote for so well maintained a road ~

Great video and thanks for sharing :). One of I think only 3 roads in NZ which if on it will totally invalidate your insurance. Rentals definitely not permitted. I think it is even specifically mentioned in contracts your not permitted on this road. Could be wrong on that one though..

@themadmgtow51963 жыл бұрын
It's only dangerous if 2 cars met head on and the drivers had to resort to fisticuffs over the right of way but then again its like that with any one lane bridge in NZ forget the right of way the signs are just Xmas decorations
@MHB70003 жыл бұрын
2/3 the way thru and havnt seen a pothole yet. Better than city roads in canada

If you really want to shit yourself on this road, do what I did and try and complete a 3 point turn (or a 40 point turn in my case) on it. Had the ass end of my car over the canyon trying to turn around. Wanted to go down there to kayak with some friends and my car couldn’t handle the road conditions at that point

I like NZ but why don't they make it safer?
@thomascampbell56334 жыл бұрын
Seriously, what happens if you come on another vehicle coming from the other direction? There is literally no room to turn around.
