Te Arawa Sword of Gallantry for Haane Manahi

The Te Arawa Sword of Gallantry for Haane Manahi is a symbol of the Office of the Chief of Defence Force. The sword is presented to the Chief of Defence Force by Te Arawa at the beginning of his tenure and returned to the iwi (tribe) when they complete their term in office. The sword represents the enduring ties between Te Arawa, the Crown and the New Zealand Defence Force.
This video features footage of Lieutenant General Tim Keating, returning the sword in July 2019 and the pōwhiri for the presentation of the sword to Air Marshal Kevin Short in August 2019.
It includes interviews with members of Haane Manahi’s family and the Manahi VC Committee.
The sword, with an altar cloth and a letter from The Queen, recognises the outstanding bravery of Lance Sergeant Haane Manahi during the Second World War.
The three gifts were presented to Te Arawa by His Royal Highness The Duke of York in 2007 at Ōhinemutu in Rotorua and the sword was immediately presented to the then Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mataparae.

I have no doubt that he deserved the Victoria Cross for his gallantry; but I feel he has achieved higher and wider recognition through this personal tribute from Queen Elizabeth for himself, his whanau, Te Arawa and Aotearoa. Thank you for sharing this story and bringing it to light.

I've lived in Northern Ireland for the last 20 years and not a day goes by that I don't miss New Zealand, my home and the country of my birth. The pride I feel when people speak about New Zealand is something I cannot put into words. I have served on the field of battle with UK forces and know only too well the courage and bravery required to do the job and watching this has filled me with a huge sense of pride yet again. Congratulations on the recognition finally received that this warrior's actions so rightly deserved. I have been to Rotorua many times, and one day I hope to return. Until that day I'll continue to keep Aotearoa in my heart and in my soul as a reminder to me of who I am and where I'm from. Much love to the NZDF. God bless.
