Robbie McGavin's NZR 2 Abs to Central Otago, Easter Sunday 1967, Silent 8mm Film, Taieri Gorge - redigitised and restored from the original 8mm film.
Billed as NZRLS Otago Branch Steam Safari 1967. Locos are Ab 705 and Ab 782. The opening scene has SI Express departing south from Milton the day before with Ja 1258.

Robbie McGavin's original description:
8mm Kodachrome II film from 1967 of NZR two Abs hauling a train from Dunedin to Middlemarch and back. Intro with a little Otago steam.
Apologies for shaky camera, a clockwork 3-lens monstrosity called a 'Holiday Metermatic', I was 16yrs old.
The views in the Taieri Gorge are rather nice.
An unlisted experimental version with Peter McGavin playing Debussy on the old McGavin family piano: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p92IetKqtZjLemw.html

Hell, what memories are in this clip! It was a wonderful time to be alive, many days I passed by the Dunedin Railway yards and station. Funny, I didn't think much about it all then, nor did I really appreciate it - now, 60 years or so on, how I would love to go back to those days! And Dunedin!

Many expeditions to the vantage points, and filming different trains going through. Sure: stitched together very smoothly - but I was looking at the coach roofs! The pattern of clean roofs to dirty is the give-away! And beautiful country there. On several occasions (1969 - 1972), we tramping freaks would take the railcar from Dunedin and tell the driver where we wanted to get off. They always obliged! Other times we used the tunnels as a shortcut, and the bridges. Sweet as, eh! My last run was from Alex to Dunedin, Feb 1975 I think it was. Me and my bike taking a shortcut home. Damn fool thing, tearing up the top end of that line.

I went up that line a couple of times when I was young. Impressive scenery, bshind Abs (I think the last time a steam loco other than an Ab ran on that line was in 1958, an A which failed and was scrapped soon after). I moved to the Hutt in 1969, and I've never been able to think of that railway snce without Abs in the picture.
