O Roll Test Orchestrion Plays "Beer Barrel Polka"

I like this arrangement because of the clever finale which superimposes the trills from "Stars and Stripes Forever" over the chorus. Even though the bells and the xylophone are playing the exact same notes, the bells accentuate the single perforation trills while the reiterating xylophone brings out the sustained melody notes. If you listen carefully you'll also hear "The Pennsylvania Polka" played as a counter melody right before the big finale.

As kids in the 60s, my friend and would drive all over California to see orchestrions. To hear one play themes for silent comedies is the best! Thank you so much for this video!!!!

Listen very carefully at 1:00 and you'll hear the Pennsylvania Polka in the piano accompaniment. 14 It went right by me until around the 10th time I enjoyed it. That is cleverest arrangement I think I've ever heard. Art Reblitz easily doubles the fun. What a genius and what a wonderful orchestrion! Lots of Seeburgs and Wurlitzers performing out there but this rebuild sounds the greatest to me. I'm no expert, just a huge fan! Thanks Bruce ~ Its a terrific restoration. Now I'm going back to hear the orchestrion play the Pennsylvania Polka.

Wow, it comes after the PP. There is so much going on you really have to wait for it. That's Wild! :) By the way when I heard Bruce's orchestrion play BBP on U-tube I knew he was the guy for me. I got the bug when I was 11 yrs old as I heard & watched one play at Whitney's at-the-beach next to the Cliff House in San Francisco. I was so lucky to find Bruce. Bruce completely rebuilt and enhanced my old Operators partial Reproduco. He built the entire good-looking chests and pneumatics for the pipes, bells, xylo, traps and every instrument that could go into an orchestrion including colorful LEDs that follow the instrumentation. Bruce designed a neat looking fascinating selection device to actuate in time the many different accompanying instruments (equiv to two orchestrions) and all have their chance to solo along with the piano & traps. The selector allows the instruments to change & take their turn as the roll turns them on and off. It's the cleverest device I've ever seen & heard. :) :) :) :) :) 😃 My life long dream to enjoy a real pneumatic orchestrion at home became a reality. It's fun to see people's eyes get wide & smile when they hear & see a hundred year old orchestrion play from a paper roll.

I’ve been wondering: is that pneumatic relay system used in every single Orchestrion ever made or just this one? Because I think I’ve seen it in quite a few of them! It seems smart: using one set of holes on the vacuum bar to play multiple instruments just by switching some valves on and off at the right times! I mean, the roll and vacuum bar would have to be REALLY wide to play them all otherwise.

There are 66 piano notes that play from holes 20-85 on the tracker bar. The rest of the holes in the tracker bar control other functions. This may be helpful: www.mmdigest.com/Archives/Digests/200111/2001.11.24.07.html

I like this arrangement too! It is witty and very 1960s pop at the same time! And you're right, the combination ending really sounds great on your set-up with the single-stroke bells and reiterating xylophone! I'm sure this instrument would sound great on a recording, if you ever chose to make one! What is the instrument visible just to the left and behind this one? It looks like another orchestrion!

Hi Andrew and Bruce, I arranged this for A, G , and O rolls for Durrell Armstrong in March 1972. The O-roll version was the 22nd roll that I arranged on my drawing board, long before MIDI. Dave Junchen and I each supplied arrangements for the new 10-tune rolls and we had a long list of rolls to arrange. Then Durrell had a falling out with a partner and the project never went forward.

Hi there, it's not really a medley but an arrangement of one tune - The Beer Barrel Polka (sometimes called Roll Out the Barrel). The arranger has cleverly worked in several other tunes to ornament the main song. Listen for the following: The Pennsylvania Polka, Under the Double Eagle March, and Stars and Stripes Forever.

There is a book you can buy called "The Orchestrion Builder's Manual and Pneumatics Handbook" by Craig Brougher. Some of the designs seen in this instrument come from that book. First, you should rebuild at least one foot pumped player piano, and preferably several, as you need to understand how a preexisting instrument works before you go and modify it and build new instruments to add to it. For that I recommend two Art Reblitz books: "Piano Servicing, Tuning and Rebuilding" (now in its third edition), and "Player Piano Servicing and Rebuilding" (Only one edition but excellent). Also, you'll need to apprentice to a piano tech in your area, or else learn via an on-line course such as one offered on Facebook etc. There are also groups like "Piano Technicians International Beginners" that offer tips etc. for beginners and amateurs working on pianos.
