In this Bonsai video, we cover pruning and shaping ideas for Oak Bonsai trees, featuring an oak Bonsai forest, a large collected Oak, and both Shohin and Mame-sized Oaks.
Check out Attila's Channel ⏩‪@FangornBonsai‬
Personally I think Oak trees are nice for Bonsai due to their hardy nature, unique bark texture, and beautiful leaf structure. When working with Oak Bonsai, it's crucial to envision the desired final shape and set clear goals for each tree. In this video, I explore various pruning techniques with my friend Attila Csintalan from Fangorn Bonsai, demonstrating various pruning methods to enhance the beauty and health of each tree.
We cover techniques such as removing problematic branches to prevent inverse taper, creating ramification, and why defoliating oak might not be ideal. Additionally, we address issues like correcting weak apices and cleaning old cuts to stimulate healing. Given the sensitivity of oaks to wiring, close monitoring is essential to prevent scarring.
My hope with this video is to provide you with valuable Bonsai information that you can use when pruning your own Oak Bonsai! If you have any suggestions for how I can improve my technique or if there are alternative methods you would recommend, please share them with me in the comments below. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and it will help me continue to refine and enhance my Bonsai practices!

Been growing Bonsai for around 35 years had my ups and down and lost a few really great trees due to disease, storms and stupidity, one thing with this hobby is a school day with Bonsai. Also its great to see younger enthusiasts, as its so often seen as an old mans hobby.

Hi Adam I-enjoyed your video on Oaks I especially love your shared videos you both work well together, oaks can be difficult as bonsai but you seem to have them under control, greenfly sure love your oaks they are all over it, time to spray with whatever you use to rid the trees of the little blighters, ants love them and will farm them so they get the sticky secretions left by them. I have not had much of a problem with green or black fly this year but I do seem to have a lot more ants than usual, they are everywhere.

great video, again- tips well done- the video quality and production is brilliant! However, (and this is a general comment and in no way directly related to your videos)- is there some reason that nearly no-one gives good tips on collecting and collected trees? For anyone living in forested or countrified areas, this has to be the fun-est (is that a word?) and most excellent way to get real pre-bonsai that can then be worked over years (it's the way I'm doing quite a lot of things). The skills of collecting, early growing, and working towards bonsai on a thing that already has for instance a big trunk and very few roots is something that apparently doesn't get much talked about on youtube. Any thoughts for your thoughtful channel?
@attilacsintalan3285

Great question. Attila here from the video. At least here in Ireland you would need to go through a lot of paperwork from councils to get permission to dig out or collect trees from the wild.
@notionbonsai
@notionbonsai 29 күн бұрын
You're absolutely right that this aspect of bonsai doesn't receive as much attention on platforms like KZfaq. It's a rich area where the skills of field collecting, early growth management, and long-term development play a crucial role. On my channel, I'll definitely consider creating content that dives deeper into these topics in the future. Attila is totally right, getting the correct permissions can be tricky - though if you know a land owner maybe they will let you collect. Always collect ethically if you do!

@@notionbonsai @attilacsintalan3285 Yes obviously putting moral and legal issues aside, which should be dealt with by the participant themselves of course- there are many people who have access to a lot of trees in the ground (and - for instance - a lot of farmers and foresters who'd like to be rid of them), so I think it'd be great to here more stories from folks who have tried and failed/succeeded. I'm guessing it isn't you though, which is totally fine. as you say, it is a whole new set of skills.
