OAK name modification - Barbara Leslie, President, Oakland Board of Port Commissioners

The Port of Oakland will consider modifying the name of Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK) by replacing “Metropolitan” with “San Francisco Bay” on April 11, 2024. The proposed name will be the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. The airport code “OAK” and visual brand will remain the same. The Port is taking this step to help airline service, sustain passenger traffic, reaffirm the airport’s connection to Oakland, and maximize the local benefits of air travel for Oakland and the region. We consistently hear from local travelers about their desire for more direct flights to more domestic and global destinations. To make this happen, travelers who live outside of the San Francisco Bay Area need to learn that OAK is located on the San Francisco Bay and close to regional destinations. The lack of geographic awareness among inbound travelers means that flights to OAK haven’t performed as well as they could. This has led to the loss of routes at the airport and made carriers reluctant to add new routes. The Port of Oakland must work to protect over 30,000 good-paying, direct jobs generated by OAK and its $1.6 billion in economic impact on the region.

Y’all wasting your time do not change the name. It’ll only make you look stupider. Put your energy in fixing the area. Use whatever resources you have at your disposal to fix the area.

OAK is the first airport that I ever flew into. Reno put Tahoe second like Fresno put Yosemite second, but you want put S.F. first 🤦🏼‍♂️

Bad idea -- just confuses flyers. I don't think this is a good idea because it is going to confuse travelers. Your goal is supposedly to help people be able to associate that OAK is a regional airport near SFO; I get it. But the flip side of that is this will just introduce confusion. Imagine someone making travel plans and thinking they could create their own connection by flying into SFO and then flying the next segment out of OAK. It doesn't sound too preposterous when you tell them they are flying in and out of "San Francisco airport." If the issue is branding, don't just stick "San Francisco" in front of it. There already IS a San Francisco airport. Fix your branding in some other way.

Yes. Completely agree with the name change. This clarity is same as in New York with NY LaGuardia and NY JFK. Allows travelers to choose their travel and budget wisely. SFO cannot trademark "San Francisco" or "SF Bay Area"... so just do it!

Also, ignore the comments about the city of Oakland or surrounding area. Irrelevant. If this is what frequent flyers cared about, no one would fly into Newark International. (Comments about an airport name change seem to be from infrequent flyers, not folks like me - SW A-List w/Companion Pass flyer.) Just do it.

First of all, you guys do not deserve to use the San Francisco name. Oakland is not San Francisco, AT ALL, and you are only trying to ride of San Francisco's coat tails by doing so. You will not only confuse potential passengers, but you will also be putting them in danger, because if they inadvertently buy a ticket to the "Oakland airport" when they meant to buy one to SFO, then they will be stuck in Oakland trying to navigate out of that DANGEROUS AREA with ZERO experience, essentially making them sitting ducks, oblivious to the rampant crime and danger that exists in Oakland, particularly in the area surrounding the Oakland airport. This is wrong in so many ways, and every single official serving the Oakland city government is to blame for all the crime there. You guys should have realized a long time ago, that enough is enough, and should be trying to use all available power to remedy the problems that plague Oakland. That place is the festering, cancerous stink hole of the Bay, and claiming association with San Francisco is like putting a Mickey Mouse band-aid over a rotten bullet wound. Get it together OAKLAND!

To make this happen, you must improve the area around the airport ideally the whole city because nobody wants to be there
