Right on, Frankie! I met some really nice officers while I volunteered in the Community Services of the Oakland Police Department. Wonderful people, doing a very hard job. They really keep mum about the truly bad stuff they face every day.

Azazel that's stupid, you should never get degree in criminal justice if you going for police, what you should do is get degree in anything else but criminal justice that's what they actually recommend because if you get shot and become incapable of performing street service you then have accounting degree let's say and you can still work and not sit at home because now you have no job. Do your research I did mine

Cessaly, Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I went through the O.P.D. Academy in 1987-88. Law enforcement was a rewarding experience but sometimes it could be a very lonely and thankless job. Citizens like you made it worthwhile.

The academy would be much easier if you are an athlete. You have to prepare physically at least six months or more. You have to practice to run at least 5 miles daily. Otherwise, your drill instructors would be on you all the time trying to catch up. They don't teach you enough defense skills in less than six months, martial arts experiences would definitely help you on the street. Also, shooting skill would also help. Remember, there is a war out there and you couldn't always depend on others. There are lots of tall, big bad guys that wanted to hurt you, and you have to constantly prepare. Most nice cop die first.

It’s not harder then the marine corps training trust me and it’s not a requirement.

want to write tickets all day? join CHP. jkjk. I wanted to be a CHP officer sooooo bad. But sheriff just won the battle between CHP and sheriff. My whole room is mostly CHP tho. I want to take it down soo bad but I just can't.

Its different everywhere. Call your police department or if you happen to see a police officer some where stop and ask. I know for my local sheriff department you have to take a pellet be test (all departments), a physical (all departments) and a background ( all departments). If you get into the academy you basically go through everything you need to know. Police codes, traffic stop and pursuit training, many scenarios, and so much more. But after a 24 + weeks of academy time you then become a police officer. But trust me once you become a police officer you will love it. I want to be a sheriff deputy and that is because I know that here in my county we get 1,000,000 calls a year or 83,000 calls a month. But thats because my county has more than 1,800,000 people. Also because I know there are people who need help and trst us to solve there problems. So why not be there? But yeah call your local police department and ask. Also ask for a ride along with the officer.

You are required to be tasered and maced in a police academy, mainly because you can easily lose your stuff to someone, and get turned on.

the exact same with OC spray, you are purposely tased and sprayed so that you know personally what it feels like, and will help you make a further judgmental decision on whether or not its necessary or not.

Good.Excellent job be police,I support you. I was police student on Chile (South America), there do very good friends,like brothers,teach good values and help to the people,but the police on Chile is bad view ,criminals and students knock with stones to the police and nobody the protection.

I hope you don't think all police do is give tickets? I mean yeah they can and will pull people over but that's only 1% of there job. I am also a teen but want to work my my sheriff department. police take all type of calls from fights, domestic violence , kidnapping, shots fired, home invasion, trespassing and anything you can think of. I am not meaning to ruin your plan for FBI but when people call 911 the police, sheriff, and highway patrol come to help. I guess FBI deals with mostly federal stuff and not local. I want to be a law enforcement tho because hundreds of thousands if not millions of people call 911 everyday, and most of the time they call because they are at the worst time of there life. so why not be there too help them? think about it.

You got time but its always ok to be sure early. Me being 26 I feel that time is against me because although I'm almost done at a community college in which i am majoring in criminal justice. I am looking to transfer but I been having second thoughts about it. I also been having second thoughts on joining the military also but I'm 26 and technically I should already be in the academy.or it least a few years in the armed forces. I am looking to get into law enforcement as well.
