It's a matter of demographics and probability. While the vast majority within those 2 groups aren't criminals, when crimes do occur those 2 groups are disproportionately represented. The problem, though, is that we have to be careful not to overgeneralize, since the vast majority within those 2 groups are law-abiding.

You seem to have missed the part where there are 35 officers on the streets at any given time. The rest are either off duty or working on investigating / solving crimes .

You do the math 35 per shift, assume the best, they have 3: that’s 105 officers to attend to 3,300 calls. Even if you assume 10% are serious that’s 105 to need to act or investigate 330 serious crimes. Even Danny Reagan couldn’t solve 1/day! 😂

Didn't I just read a story about Oakland potentially laying off police due to budget cuts... Confirmed near the end of the story, 705 officers, only authorized 678. But if only 35 officers on duty, and they run 3 shifts, that's only 105 working each day. Do they only work one or two days a week? "The city is home to about 435,000 residents." "Last year its dispatch center received 1.2 million emergency and non-emergency calls." So, if you average it out, it is like every resident in the city calling the police 2 to 3 times a year. Damn.

Look at the numbers, Oakland is 78 square miles with 600-705 officers. San Francisco is 46 square miles with 1800 officers and a budget number of 2100 officers and it is actually going to be more. If SFPD can barely keep up Oakland must be drowning and I feel so sorry for the officers.

That 78 square miles in Oakland is misleading because 22-23 sq. miles of that is water. So, actually it is 55 sq miles of land. SF is 46 sq miles of land. Oakland is not that much bigger. Population wise, SF is nearly double that of Oakland.

@@3ofus135 Thanks for that good information! that does change things, San Francisco may have double the population, but I feel that SF is dealing with drugs and Oakland is dealing with a gun and violence problem. I hope Oaklands city report is looking at all the types of crime and and not just a we have X population and need Y number of cops. 35 cops on at night, but one homicide probably requires half of the 35 cover that homicide or major event (side show, or domestic violence)

I think there was a study done that used population and violent crimes per year to get an average of officers needed to respond to those violent crimes. I think it was like 1100 officers. And that’s just violent priority calls for service.

If they have 700 officers and 35% which is 120 per day and of course the officers can't work 7 days a week it still doesn't add up why would they have an extra amount amount of officers to that extreme that doesn't make sense You might have another 100 or 200 for those days those people have to take off but that still leaves Nearly 500 other officers that are not on patrol And they're not talking about administrative workers and they're not talking about dispatch
