How I miss those days. Just my opinion - Ken Stabler had a "la magie" in his play that made him the most dangerous QB to have ever played in the NFL. If there was any chance of finding a way to win, he could do it - some of the most incredible wins I've ever seen. Truly, the most deserving of the HOF. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Yessiree...he was "my guy" as a kid. Didn't know much about his off field life but I sure admired his poise and accuracy. Even as a natural righty, I taught myself to throw a football left handed because of him. I can't throw anything else with my left except a football..lol :D

One of the greatest QBs in NFL history. Who couldn't love the snake, who always threw with pinpoint accuracy, and loved to party with his teammates. The core of that 70's squad, led by Kenny, would sneak out at night from the training camp barracks to go party in town. The snake asked...' How much sleep do you need to play football?' At the nightclubs, the Raiders would draw up their game plans by the light of the jukebox. Coach Madden looked the other way a lot and closed his eyes to a lot of other stuff because Stabler and the Raiders always delivered on the field.

I'm glad I got to see Ken Stabler and the Raiders in a Pre-Season game in the Summer of 1976 against the then St.Louis Cardinals in Tempe, Arizona. They were fantastic. I've never been a Raiders fan, but I always give credit where credit is due, and to this day I'm baffled as to why neither Ken Stabler nor Jim Plunkett are in the hall of fame. Did both quarterbacks have a few bad seasons? Of course. But so did Joe Namath. So did Fran Tarkenton. So did Bart Starr. So did Johnny Unitas.

Snake was an excellent athlete; was offered a contract by the New York Yankees, and a star at Alabama. Given that, it was unbelievable that he was sent to the minor league Spokane Shockers to play in the Continental Football League. That illustrates, 1) the talent on the Raiders, and 2) the huge difference between the NFL and college 50 years ago.

When the nfl still played football -!: quarterbacks were actually football players. I think the 70’s were the greatest decade for the nfl. I love how the guys just hand/toss the ball back to the red most of the plays. No extravagant celebrations like they never scored before. I love watching these old highlights more than I enjoy watching the live crap the nfl puts out now. Every tackle you have to wait for a second to see if the defense tackled too hard

Is it just me? Damn do I miss 70's NFL Football. Their was still respect for the game. Coach Madden wearing a Tie, & zero ridiculous TD celebrations like today's Football. I was in HS in the 70's. I too was Left Handed, & I studies all the physical moves of Stabler, & it helped me personally during the Football Season. I started out as the 3rd String QB. In my HS, I experienced for the first time in my Life, Racisms!!! It was pathetic!! It was the Mexican V. Blacks. Our Team was half-'n-half. We're playing our cross town arch enemies, & the Blacks on the OL were letting the Defense just go by, & I was getting the shit beat out of me. They were also laughing @ us all. @ Half Time, I screamed @ everyone & said: "Fucken Stop it NOW! We're wearing the same Helmets!!! They're laughing @ us all. We lost, & I went home in tears. Life went on, & I became a Criminal Defense Attorney in Tucson. To this day, when I run into any of our former players, they all say to me that it's their greatest regret in Life for giving up & throwing the game against the FUCKEN Sunnyside Blue Devils. To this day, I still take it so personal. When I've gone up against a Prosecutor who just happen to go to SS HS, it still burns me, even though I kick their Asses in Trial. Why? Because I still remember that game, & how much I still hate Sunnyside. It was the Projects against the Middle class Mexicans who had both parents @ Home, & the majority of us @ Pueblo were from the Projects, in a single parent home. That's why, & fucken Sunnyside never let us for get that....

What many, if not most NFL fans tend to forget, is that Peyton Manning played and Tom Brady currently plays in an exceedingly weak era in NFL history because there have been no great teams in the AFC at all other than the Patriots during the Brady era. Brady has had no great teams to challenge him! The Indianapolis Colts under Manning were not a great team! They were a very good team that lost way too many postseason games! The NFC has had no great teams at all during the Brady era to challenge the Patriots which explains the Patriots' absurd record of 8 Super Bowl appearances under Brady.

Tom Brady has had no Vince Lombardi Packers teams of the 1960's, Chuck Noll Pittsburgh Steelers teams of the 1970's, John Madden Oakland Raiders teams of the 1970's, Don Shula Miami Dolphins teams of the early 1970's, Tom Landry Dallas Cowboys teams of the 1970's , Bill Walsh San Francisco 49ers teams of the 1980's or Jimmy Johnson Dallas Cowboys teams of the early 1990's to challenge him.

Well, times have changed. Teams are constituted differently. Free agency, while surely a right the players should have, has made it more difficult to develop quarterbacks, and all other positions. Belichick (whom I don't like personally) is much better at roster management than anyone else. We'll see how well he does without Tom Brady. Probably mediocre at best. Defenses now with zone blitzing, are much tougher on quarterbacks than during that golden age.
@michaelbarlow6610
@michaelbarlow6610 3 жыл бұрын
@ ARIZJOE. Regarding you claim that today's NFL defenses are much tougher on NFL QBs than during the "Golden Age" of pro football, it is just the opposite! In today's NFL football the rules have been changed to protect the QB from being knocked out of a game because the QBs are viewed as superstars that drive the TV ratings! Back in the 1970's the rules did not protect the QBs. Defenses could hit the QBs back then as aggressively as they wanted provided that it was not a late hit or considered to be a late hit by the officials. Just look at how many concussions that NFL QBs like Staubach, Bradshaw and Stabler suffered from opposing defenses back then! Stabler's dementia at the end of his life was undoubtedly caused by all the concussions he suffered in his NFL career from opposing defenses! Opposing defenses can't touch the QB in today's NFL without the referees pulling out that little yellow flag and throwing it!
@ARIZJOE
@ARIZJOE 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbarlow6610 "Tougher to throw the ball accurately." Zone blitzing, tricky disguised coverages. Although hitting is less with new rules, players are bigger and faster. F = M x A. That has not changed.
@michaelbarlow6610
@michaelbarlow6610 3 жыл бұрын
@ ARIZJOE. "Tougher to throw passes accurately"???? To quote John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious man!" Stabler's 1976 Oakland Raiders offense, Dan Fouts' San Diego Chargers' passing offense of the 1980's and Dan Marino's 1984 Miami Dolphins' passing offense would go through today's opposing defenses like "s_ _ _" through a goose"! Stabler was superb at reading excellent defenses, even disguised blitz defenses, and make them look positively silly! Just ask the Pittsburgh Steelers' Joe Greene, one of the greatest defensive players in the history of pro football! At halftime during a Raiders-Steelers game in the 1970's (it may have been during either the 1st game of the 1976 season or the AFC Championship game that season (both of which Oakland won and both of which were played in Oakland) Pittsburgh head coach Chuck Noll asked "Mean Joe" Greene what adjustments the Steelers needed to make in the 2nd half of the game to stop the Raider's offense and Greene responded, "How the hell should I know? Stabler's kicking our butts out there!" If you were to equalize the weights of the greatest NFL teams of the past with the weights of current NFL teams, you would very quickly discover (unless of course your powers of observation are exceedingly lacking) that the current NFL teams like Brady's N.E. Patriots teams are not only not better than the greatest NFL teams of the past , but in many instances are not as great as those teams of earlier and previous generations were!

Stabler's was a great regular season quarterback, but when it came down to winning the conference championships, he did not live up to the moment...his 1-4 record does not compare to Bradshaw's 4-2, Griese 3-0, Staubach 4-2 , and even Tarkenton 3-1...bottom line it's about winning
@johnmongani5223
@johnmongani5223 7 жыл бұрын
well QB play is not the only reason a team wins a league title so it's not fair to put the blame all on Stabler for the Raiders1-4 record during his time. Bradshaw and Griese had hall of fame players on defense when the Raiders didn't, and hall of fame running backs when the Raiders didn't. And Tarkenton's 3-1 record proves that a QB is not the reason a team wins because the Vikings were terrible in Super Bowls. They won NFC titles because they had great special teams and the NFC was weaker than the AFC.
@michaelbarlow6610
@michaelbarlow6610 4 жыл бұрын
@ Keith Clark. You couldn't be more wrong about Stabler in your referral to him as just a great "regular season" QB. The reason Stabler lost those 3 AFC Championship games was because he went up against one of the all-time greatest teams (and greatest defensive teams) in Chuck Noll's Pittsburgh Steelers teams in 1974 and 1975. And even though the Raiders got royally screwed on the non-call on the infamous Rob Lytle fumble during the 1977 AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos, you have to remember two things: (1) Stabler lost his favorite WR Fred Biletnikov just before halftime in that game when Biletnikov had to leave the game with a separated shoulder and could not play the second half of that game, which allowed Denver to double-cover either TE Dave Casper or WR Cliff Branch. Mike Siani replaced Biletnikov for the second half of that game. And (2) Denver played very well that game!
