Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, NY - Part 1

Originally a "Rural Cemetery", 2 miles outside of the city, designed as a park where one can go and visit with family and have dinner or just meditate away from the city bustle of the late 1800. It is now in the center of the city and is a showcase of wonderful sculptures and architecture of Cemetery monuments

I found this tour very interesting Rick. Not much for cemeteries myself although have visited some old ones in the past. You made it more interesting by giving us some facts about the people themselves. You always amaze me with your diverse knowledge.

+Shatzy I feel bad. I did a terrible job as I was in a hurry to throw this together. I'm going to do more and do it much better. There are many historic people in this cemetery.

In all my travels, I find it to be a very unique cemetery! And I spend a lot of time in cemeteries all over the east !

we played there all the time in the early 60's, and my grandparents are buried there. My big brothers used to take us sledding in the winter and called it the rock garden. We never knew until we were older that it was a cemetery....Clark is our family.

Thanks for the comment Virginia. It is a very special place. I have several relative buried there, and wish I had more! LOL I wish I was there doing more videos about the history. It would be so sad if it was lost with the few folks who really know it !

It one of only about 10 cemeteries in the Nation quite so fancy. I miss having it to explore and play in ! Thanks for your comment !

Pretty cool. I have many relatives in there. The Nottingham and the Hoyt familes buried up close to the University side in 2 locations. I used to walk through there all the time as a student. The Hoyts actually lived on Kennedy St right across the highway below. The house is still there today and I have a photo of all of them out in front of it around 1893. I need to get back out to SU. William S. Nottingham was the brother of My great Grandfather Thomas W. Nottingham.

@@GoingNoWhereFast lol. Believe it or not I have a deed to I think 3 or 4 spots in there that were my Grandfathers. His first wife is in the plot but there but the rest are empty. :). It is a beautiful place.

@@jamespendleton9879 i’m not sure if we are related, i don’t know much about the hoyt side of my family my grandfather Raymond died in 1989 before i was even born. so i never knew anything about them!!

It is an amazing undertaking to keep it up. So many things wear and tear on the place and so little money to care for it. Million dollar monuments with no budget to keep them looking like a million dollars.

I'm staying overnight in Syracuse on route to MA & need a place to walk my dog. Am wondering how safe the area of cemetery is..? Was this side of town sketchy at all? Will my car be safe if I walk around? Any info will be appreciated.

Katherine Renock the ghosts will protect you !! There are 2 very nice parks in Liverpool where you can walk your dog. One has an off leash dog area.

It's a pretty heavily used cemetery by student walking to and from class.

I've moved away from Syracuse. I am now living in North Carolina. Also, KZfaq doesn't let cememtery video be promoted or monetized. Its too bad as I'm sure many KZfaq creators would do more of our fantastic cemeteries.
