A comprehensive guide on how I maintain my Oase Highline 175 Malawi Cichlid Aquascape including adding some new plants. In this video I show you exactly how I maintain this African cichlid aquarium stocked with Chindongo salousi cichlids from Lake Malawi. I also add some Anubias petite plants.
Let me know if you prefer it with or without the plants, and how do you think the plants will do in the longer term?
Keep on scaping!

First off congrats on getting married mate! Great to see the tank coming along nicely, here are some of my thoughts regarding plants and African Cichlids. I've kept Malawi's for over 10yrs and in my experience they will quite reliably leave anubias and java fern alone if they are sufficiently fed, even the mbunas which are what you have. You may find that they actually help a little with housekeeping by occasionally nipping on any algae that happens to develop on the plants. The bigger challenge I have faced over the years was actually getting the plants to survive long term in the typical water parameters that malawi's are generally kept in, but this wont really be an issue for you because if memory serves, your gravel is inert and you do not specifically alter your water parameters to mimic that of lake malawi, so I'd say you're good to go with plants. You could try planting some vallis as well for more variety, they'll leave it alone too, but you might have to pot the vallis to prevent it from being dug up. Anyway just my 2 cents, love the content!

Your videos are the reason I discovered Greenaqua in Budapest. Went there on Monday and was not disappointed. As for the plants I wish you good luck. My chiclids destroy all green that gets into the water despite being fed a vegetable rich diet! Keep up the good work. Time to make many little Georges to pass on the scaping tradition!

Awesome to hear about your impending wedding and the progress of your book. I like the addition of the Anubias, but I'm not sure they were needed as I did like the scape without them as well. The trade off of losing some of the shadows, but adding a splash of color is a great thing to sit and think on. Thanks for sharing

This looks so good and I really love Malawi cichlids. It's been over 10 years since I've had them myself now and thats just because I dont have enough space for a big tank. The last Malawi tank I had was 720L, 200x60x60. It had sand, rocks and vallis in it 🙂 The plants where left alone, I might just have been lucky with that 🙈 I really can't deside if I like it better or not with the Anubias 🤷‍♂️ Thanks again for a good video and I see that you just got married, CONGRATULATIONS! ❤

I've loved this scape since you set it up George.. The contrast between the background, the rocks and the fish are mesmerizing. I knew at some point there'd be plants in there😁, namely anubius. As long as the fish dont destroy them they'll be fine under that light. Especially with the husbandry you provide. Speaking of which.. Congratulations on the wedding!! Great video George! I think it looks great both ways. Not to much plants like you did so it doesn't take away from the overall look, but does add a different look. I have a 60 gallon overstocked Cichlid tank, which I am running two Eheims and one HOB filter and I have to say from experience the rhizome plants do good as long as anchored properly. Rooted plants not to good cause the Cichlids do disturb them most of the time. Your Cichlid tank looks awesome! Thanks for the video!

I have 2 tanks with mbunas and I had some annubias in my tanks but it only last for a couple of weeks ahahahahah. I hope that yours will last longer than mine but really difficult to keep plants with malawi cichlids... Don't be too sad if your saulosi eat all your plants, the tank looks great even without them 😅 Take care mate

Hi @georgefarmer Your aquarium is beautiful. Congratulations on the new changes, now you will have to focus on the fish. You have 4 males (3 dominant) and I am pretty sure that 2 of the females are also males but haven't yet changed colors. I would suggest you keep only 3 Males and have a ration of 3 Females for each male to keep a balanced aquarium.

There is a vid posted on Lake Malawi and shows cichlids in habitat swimming where there is a "dwarf form (with latin name) of Vallisneria. Never saw a dwarf straight leafed Val before..looked nice between granite boulders and some open sand flats. Cichlids in crystal clear water 30' deep among a jumble of huge boulders...has sort of an apocalypse look..or Las Vegas/Bahama's aquarium of ancient ruins. One thing we can't reproduce at home are boulders the size of a house!
