@@mikemandell132 That would be a nice change. My FT-301 does sort of work, but you have to sort of talk it in to it by twisting knobs that have actually nothing at all to do with why I am twisting them... reject is a sort of filter... there's a bad capacitor somewhere, I know this because after about 20 mins I have to turn reject to 5 or it throws a wobbly and screeches at me. Every so often, for no apparent reason, it decides to give me an electric shock. It is really crafty too, it kinda lulls you into a false sense of security like its saying "look, we touched, I told you I was gentle" and then just when you get your confidence up the damn thing zaps god knows how many volts up your arm.

Same here. As a movie, the pacing was overly slow. Some scenes did not seem to make any sense or contributed to the plot. For example, the part where the hispanic lady was yelling at the dude and they couldn't understand each other. I kinda get that it might allude that something bad was happening, but it seemed unnecessary. The ending was kinda stupid too in my opinion.

A lot of props in movies, and even TV shows to a lesser degree, come from companies that specialize in supplying one type of prop or another. Those prop companies have deals with manufacturers to get their products on screen, usually one company pays more to get featured more than the others. This is why you see a lot of GM products in TV shows from the 80s like Knight Rider. If a production is buying their own props and no one is sponsoring it they will buy the cheapest they can find which causes a lead actor who is playing a federal agent to use a Baofeng and confirm it is a "secure line." I suspect that a prop house set the ham shack up OR a member of the production worked on last man standing.

Being a bit sad (and an FTDX101MP owner) I just could not resist zooming in to see that external display, it is the MP, the D has different meter markings. Radio was probably reset, they "wake up" on exactly 7MHz... for many hams their partners discovering the cost of these radios could be a world ending scenario. Fortunately my wife suspected that the radio cost considerably more than it did....

@@HamRadioCrashCourse actually it’s just outside of the ham bands. I don’t remember the 40m frequency but on 80 it was like 4.010, 4.020. So having that left receiver just out of bands is likely, but I believe MARS was above the ham bands, not below.
@mikemandell132

MARS frequencies are very near ham bands because they use almost entirely ham equipment with transmit unlocked (MARS Mod-VHF is banned by MARS so that HT "Mars MOD" is NEVER for MARS anymore). They actually do interact directly with military sometimes (mostly National Guard) and do have a presence at Fort Huachuca AZ (Netcom). I was a member of Navy/MC until it cease, then Army for several years. The remnants of phone patch are popular with long haul USAF flights. The guys (a handful) who operate that are better at it than the active duty folks who do the same thing, so pilots generally tune to MARS if they need to make a call. If you tune around you can hear MARS nets multiple times a day. The net is in unencrypted voice but all traffic is STANAG mode and encrypted. @@HamRadioCrashCourse

I was interested in the stack, too and did similar research. The only thing left for me was the alert system I am interested in, so I had some ideas if this would be something realistic. System was encrypted: - If it was encrypted, the decryption is a stream cipher algorithm with error correction.A character is being send one time or multiple times with error correction and a sequence number for the character itself. If you send encrypted data over the air, one wrong character can destroy the complete transfer (depending on the algorithm used if there are dependencies). The typewriter-effect is more or less realistic if you use this kind of transfer. - if it was encrypted and if the data is encoded by a block cipher algorithm, you receive a complete data block (compressed and encrypted) and decode a complete data block. The typewriter-effect is "show" in this case. - if the msg was encrypted, you need a decryption system. This could be something between the antenna and the receiver (some hardware?) or it's a pager-like device that re-transmit the decoded data to the yaesu). If we look clother to the screen, we see a top area, a middle area and a bottom area. It looks like as if the message area is an overlay (different font, different background-color), maybe there was something else behind it and modified for the movie? Maybe the real alert system? Who knows. The frequencies shown have many same digits, maybe a more realistic frequency has been modified for something else with multiple of the same digits? Who knows. But this is really far away from whatever. (sorry for bad english)

I don't know the context in the movie, but the US uses the EAS SAME system for emergency message broadcasts, and they're fairly easy to decode. A surprising amount of digital message traffic is left in the clear and relies on security through obscurity. If you tune up the pager frequency of your local hospital and feed it to a software POCSAG decoder, you'll be shocked to see private medical information being passed around in plaintext.

I think this scene is being overthought by people who know too much. Realism, to a degree, was the goal. That was to satisfy the portion of the audience that does know a bit about what they're looking at. But then they needed a little more to build the intrigue for the rest of the audience, so in comes the monitor displaying a seemingly decrypted message in very plain language. Remember, the vast majority of the audience isn't even going to know what that equipment sitting on that desk is, or that it is commercially available. Hollywood does this quite a bit. In a military scene, there will be some very realistic elements to it because they know a portion of their audience has been in the military and would immediately lose interest if the scene was completely fake. Then they take some creative license to build interest for everyone else. We see this pattern repeated quite frequently if a scene involves something technical that would only be understood by those familiar with it, and lost upon everyone else.

In movies, they want bright colorful things buttons, screens, etc. A little off topic but, when you are inviting the media to field day, etc. Think ahead of time as to what can we make look INTERESTING for the "Camera guy?" And are people in vests? Name tags? a color screen on the radio, monitors a big TV screen showing the states, or Greyline? A banner with the club name. give them something they can take still pictures of and action where groups of people can be doing something. One year, I made signs on the back of the chairs, One said "Morse Code Operator" Why - because the PUBLIC doesn't know what CW is. I would not be surprised to learn that that the radios were chosen primarily on the aesthetic appeal of their LED displays. In another scene of the movie, there was a shot of a vehicle's radio console showing it to be tuned to an AM radio station frequency that AM radio doesn't tune to. I'm assuming they used fake radio frequencies for the same reason they have used the fake 555 prefix for telephone numbers in TV and movies.
@jamesready5
@jamesready5 7 ай бұрын
Potential Spoilers Below! That radio frequency, why it was chosen to be displayed on AM I can only assume was meant to accentuate the meaning of it, is probably one of the many hidden meanings or Easter eggs of the movie. You can look them up. That one is believed to be part of the reference to slavery. Be it past, or future, due to “the event” as would the conspiracy go. The White Lion was the name of the first ship that brought slaves to the shores of the New World in 1619, one year before the Mayflower, and landed in Point Comfort. In the movie the rented house was in Point Comfort, the beached ship was called White Lion and the radio was tuned to 1619. What I don’t understand for the life of me, is how a nation being electronically hacked affects the navigation of wildlife….where they just trying to shoehorn some weird animal scenes in there? I can see with the current flipping of the earths magnetic poles and a CME hitting us, that magnetic interference would affect animals, and humans as is believed.

Josh, just so happen I saw this movie last and was also impressed with their use of ham radio as well. I was going to go back and look at it closer and coincidentally ran accross your video. I think they were trying to send RTTY outside of the ham bands. I have noticed seeing this being done before. Not sure who is sending. Would like feed back if you know. Thanks. 73.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse That looks a lot like the output of the handful of EAS SAME decoders. Just a python console output with lines of ### as "page breaks" between messages. Definitely movie magic in this case, but I can imagine putting together an SDR# plugin that looks identical. I'd love to know what poor PA mentioned being a ham on set and got his shack raided for dressing by the Set Designer.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen the movie, yet. But interesting that people are focusing on the legal/Illegal frequency usage for a post-apocalyptic world. Apparently, the radio(s) would have been MARS modded and non-standard frequencies being utilized. Looking forward to watching the movie to see if my observations make sense.

Man I did not enjoy that movie at all. In fact I was surprised to hear Josh liked it so much. The only good part in it (in my opinion) was the ham radio setup. I guess it's just not for me, but I certainly didn't find it to be the psychological thriller it was made out to be.

I noticed that you didn't include very much actual footage from the show, just a still shot. Maybe there wasn't much to show. Or maybe it's the chilling effect of a possible takedown for copyright violation, even though that would qualify as Fair Use. HamRadioNow Episode 506 was taken down on KZfaq for over a week with a Netflix copyright claim. After I disputed it, it went back up provisionally. A couple days ago, Netflix completely rescinded their copyright claims to that episode. Unfortunately, no one has seen it, because it was down for so long.🙈 Well, no one would see it anyway because it's a HamRadioNow show. But I want everyone to know that we are out there, fighting the good fight 💪

I'm always interested in any ham radio reference (Terminator, Steely Dan old songs, etc.) but realistically whoever lived in this estate would more likely have been well-connected and have a programmed ALE radio for some SHARES stuff. Why? Because in a comm blackout like this, the last people you want to talk to are hams, who know no more than you do and are useful pretty much only for spreading disinformation over a wider area. Yeah, it's possible RACES (or some ACS-type stuff) could use hams for actual comms that is official, most of what you'd hear from hams in such an event would be rumor and speculation---exactly like the devious plot in this movie suggests will help bring anarchy.

I know everyone is focusing on the upside down frequencies, but as a fairly new ham (General; licensed 2 years; limited HF experience) could someone with more experience explain whether these are proper frequencies. I see they are in the data segment, but the one on the left is outside the 40 m band, and the one on the right does not seem far enough above the lower band edge.

no, not ham frequencies. Just something for the movie. Everyone is guessing at why these frequencies so I'll throw in mine---they are in the SW "Pirate Radio" region. Listening to pirate radio for secret info only elites can get. More interesting question is probably why would you build a huge bunker and leave the door unlocked when you bug out?
