Surely my favorite song from them. 8 years after the first time i've listened it, the chorus still haunts me to this day (Crack the skye is their best album imo)

Ey a fellow Primus fan! Cool. What are your thoughts on Blood Mountain and Remission?
@Weestinn
@Weestinn 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer Crack the Skye, but that and Leviathan are both 10/10's. Remission is a 9, Blood Mountain also a 9. What an amazing run of albums. I love their new direction too, but those first 4 albums are legendary.

Mastadon is a band similar to Tool where you can't pick a wrong favorite album. Mine is one of the less popular but I find "Once More Round the Sun" to have the most solid catalog of songs. It's just constant bangers throughout the whole album and I really feel the band is at their best on that album.

Nice. I've still got to give their newer albums more listens. Especially Emperor of Sand. OMRTS is lower on my list. But it's not bad at all.

For the chorus I think it’s actually autobiographical of Brent Hinds. He just recovered from a massive brain trauma that he was in a coma for. “Falling from grace because I’ve been away too long”. Brent waking up from his injury and having to start from square one. “Leaving you behind with my lonesome song”. The possibility he could have died from his injury and all you would remember him by would be all his songs up to Blood mountain. Brent at that point was a brutal alcoholic with depressive tendencies. “Now I’m lost in Oblivion”. Maybe he himself reflecting on this fact and having a deeper sadness of lost time and regrets

Crack the skye is still their masterpiece. Such a great complete prog record. It’s so dense with killer riffs, weird chord progressions, and really unique creative guitar playing. It could only be written by Brent hinds. He’s my favorite part of mastodon just because he’s so unique. He writes crazy stuff that is really hard to wrap your head around yet it still has an accessibility that makes it digestible to someone whose not familiar with what’s going on musically. I love everything mastodon does but those 4 first records are truly something special. It redefined American metal when they came out and set a new benchmark for what Amrit made metal can achieve when musicians step outside the box and explore. Now they’re too interested in being a more commercial pop band with simpler songs structures and generally way more accessibility. At least those first 4 records though are really great though.

I went to see Mastadon and Dethclock when Mastadon released Crack the Skye at the Old Lady at Brady. Mastadon played the album from beginning to end and had a video through the whole album. The video goes along with some young person who is physically disabled who can separate his soul from his body and travels through the solar system while connected to his body through a golden cord. Some disturbance (a crazed, bad person who end up being Satan in the concert video) breaks the cord, and the soul goes through time and ends up encountering Rasputin in early 1900's. The soul tries to warn Rasputin of his future while trying to find his way back home. Rasputin tries to return the soul, but there are many assassination attempts on his life until one finally succeeds. Crack the Skye was the climax song/part of the story where you find out the disturbance was Satan all along.
