Obraztsova & Merkuriev - Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux

This short video clip of ballet "Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux", choreographed by George Balanchine and performed by Bolshoi dancers Evgenia Obraztsova & Andrei Merkuriev, is extracted from video - Kremlin Gala "Звезды балета XXI века" 2012 г. Отделение I. (See • Video , from 4:58 to 15:43.)
Moreover, I have done some color correction on the original video images. According to my limited knowledge on ballet, the costume-colors in Balenchine's Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux should be light pink for female dancer and light gray for male dancer, very graceful colors. However, in the original video the male dancer's costume is in highly saturated magenta/purple. Where did such weird color come from? I guess that is from the digital camera's mistaking, but not the director's idea. So, I tried to make some color correction to get the light pink and gray for costumes, especially to achieve good skin tone for the lovely ballerina.
At the end of this video clip, starting from 10:47, the color correction is revealed by comparing the colors before and after correction.

This could cure any sleeping disorder. Even her costume looks like a nightgown. How sad it is taking to attention that both are wonderful dancers and look quite nice together.

Spectacular. Andrei Merkuriev's technique is not as clean as some of the other Russian male dancers, but he's one of my favorite dancers. His artistry is amazing. He's the best Espada that I have ever seen.

what do you guys mean “too slow”? theres an ochestra tempo and they are just moving along with the ochestra. they listen to the music. the ochestra should be faster also then...

The tempo is agonizingly slow, and some of the choreography for the male is shortened or changed. And I think the piece is best performed straight through, without all the endless pauses for bows and applause. Obratsova is good, though. She looks like she could definitely handle a better, faster tempo.

If the tempo is faster, it starts to look comical....as the dancers are rushing to extend their legs and finish their poses. That's what was wrong with ballet in the 1960s....looks less lyrical when it's rushed and you don't take time to show the exquisite line

I agree with you. I am not a big fan of this performance (I think that they are great dancers) but there are little faults here and there. The Misha - McBride performance, without cuts, remains unrivaled

Allow the dancers the agency for interpreting a dance piece according to their own ways of dancing, thinking and moving. They're not trained like Balanchine dancers so their interpretation is more Russian in its lyricism and fluidity. There are certainly a multitude of ways to interpret choreography and the context of training and aesthetic plays a big role - is that so wrong?

Absolutely, the sign of a true artist is his own interpretation, his own individuality and not copying someone else, that is the difference between an artist and a dancer

Well, BytomGirl " The sing of true artist" is first to follow, STRICTLY to follow choreographer and his specific demands and then to find place for his own individuality... True artist will first dance Balanchine, from A to Z, not something a la Balanchine showing his inividuality. This interpretation is definitely something AFTER Balanchine and is not Balanchine.

True artist is the one that follows the choreography (that is obvious) but adds his own expression of feelings so he becomes the character and not the dancer who pretends to be the character. He understands the character and what he is about and not just blindly follows choreography without even knowing the history of the ballet or even a libretto.

Of course that applies to a ballet with a libretto, Balanchine's productions are usually visual eye candy with no story but even there interpretation can be different, more playful or more graceful than someone else's. I have seen Rubies and Diamonds being awfully boring and others exciting and playful in Rubies and graceful and romantic in Diamonds. Many just going through the motions so you can strictly follow the choreography that says no story and still give something of your own

Marvelous performance almost topping Tyler Peck, the Queen of this female role. but lacking the great head swerve of Tyler's in the coda and a fatigue caused lack of oomph in the two fish dives, of Mercuriev. Other than that, Genia has really finessed this role and all the choreography...just needs to delay the head thrust backwards a moment...a la Peck...which always takes the cake on the final exit, stage right, lifted over his head.

Although this is beautifully danced, it doesn’t look like Balanchine’s choreography to me….there’s an attitude that’s missing, and it doesn’t matter how charmingly it’s danced, or how technically perfect. I suppose it would be similar to the NYCB staging “Spartacus” by Grigorovich, without his input, just from watching footage of its being danced; it may not even be possible to learn the strong Russian “bravura” which is necessary in Grigorivich’s ballets. I thought that the Balanchine Trust had to be involved in the répétiteur teaching of his choreography, so I don’t know what happened here.

I have never seen a Russian pair that can do this pas right. Ballanchine ballets put choreography at the service of the music. They become integrated so you can't appreciate one without the other. It's not about progressing from one extension to another. And if you can be seen to spot your pirouettes in advance you're music is too slow. And don't even get me started on the fish dives. The need to be a lot more risky or why bother at all with this pas de deux at all??

True but he was also a rebel for russian standards. One of the reasons he defected was that he could not grow as choreographer in Russia. In fact, it is short time ago that the russians hat begonnen to take modern ballet in their repertoires. I love , I really love the russian school, I do not believe you will find a more beautiful performance of Giselle or Swan Lake than the one of russian dancers, but they are terrible when it is about modern pieces. And I agree, a couple of exceptions aside (like Makharova or Baryshnikov) It is really hard to remember a russian dancer who can dance Balanchin right.

Why the Russian-Vaganova treatment? Why soooooo slowwwww?!?!?!?! Part of the charm of this piece is its speed and its off-kilter, everything-barely-in-control, we're-about-to-lose-it bravura. Too safe, and Obratsova is capable of moving far more fleetly and far more daringly.

Well, individual dancers have their own ways of moving, but the Balanchine Trust keeps an iron grasp on his choreography. His ballets are not to be performed without being taught by an authorized répétiteur from the Trust, and I thought that person can stop dancers from going on stage if they’ve not learned it well enough. Something very weird happened here, that’s for sure, because my immediate thought was, “Beautifully danced, but it looks nothing like Balanchine!” And it surely does not!

I just watched this with the volume turned off .....There is no semblance of Balanchine left in the execution of the choreography . I give this performance a 3 out of 10 !

sure there are many , I like the tempo and neo classical movement that Patricia McBride and Baryshnikov bring, Although you can still see the vaganova training in Michas execution ,(Balanchine was there for that recording which of course means this is how it was to be presented !_. There is also Darcy Bussell who dances Balanchine very well, surprisingly although her technique is strongly rooted in very classical.....There are many examples!

Darcy Bussell Clumsy and Stiff ...That's Rich! She dances at the correct tempo Balanchine choreographed the piece and delivers .She is not slowing the pace of the music, this is not Juliet ..So of course Obrastova can luxuriate and self indulge in the choreography , But a lot of dancers can do that when you take an allegro and make it an adagio . So hence the quality is in the speed in which its delieverd.

Omg, could the music get any slower? I get it that NYCB dancers go at breakneck speed and slowing it down for everyone else might be prudent. But this is by far the slowest Tchai Pas I’ve seen. 🙄

Whats wrong with the sleeves?, they add to the flowing, light feeling and when he is around her, he feels like a protective angel with wings. What a lovely couple they are with so much chemistry.

Gorgeous dancers but this is too far from Balanchine. No risky fish dives, slow tempos and too careful for Balanchine. Also Evgenia's dress looks like a nightwear

They are def one of the best Russian couples I've seen do this. But Geez.. So slow. Wonder if they could have pulled it off as well at the normal tempo

For me this is the best couple performing this wonderful Tchaikovski. They are in the right tempo, no too slow nor fast to savor it The really feel, loveTchaikovski one can see it by the joy they are emanating when dancing this piece.

As a huge fan of the Vaganova style, it's almost painful for me when I see something like NYC Ballet do white swan pdd. Now I understand how Balanchine fans feel. As technically amazing as Obratsova is, that solo was just wrong. Her whole solo I was like "Come on, move it girl! Faster faster pleeeeease!"

But he did not make the choreography though. It takes to know Balanchine`s work to know and understand that dancers have to "forget" a big deal of their Vaganove education to get Balanchine in the right way.

Tiler Peck is very fast, good techniqe but lacks the lyricism, sweetness of Eugenia and Andrei, very beautiful couple and their understanding of Tchaikovski, the whole thing flows at the right speed to be savored.

Wow, so much of this was 'cheated' those fish dives, there is no dive, she doesn't even jump and he's got hold of her. She's not very secure en pointe often and needs to be physically turned around by him a couple of times and those fouettes! Ooof!
