OBS Powerstroke Ford vs 2nd Gen Cummins Dodge Ram | What’s REALLY Better?

I put the two best diesel trucks of the late 90s head to head to decide which one truly comes out on top. Will it be the 5.9 liter 24 valve Cummins powered 2nd gen, or the 7.3 liter Powerstroke powered OBS Ford that takes the crown? To find out I compared the interior, drivetrain, drive ability and reliability on both trucks!

My "new" 1997 OBS F250 7.3 with a 5-speed has only 194,000 miles on it. I got it with 97,000 miles. Both trucks gave me ZERO probelms, aside from the first one needing injectors at 460,000 miles. I couldn’t find a truck like that and ended up purchasing a 96 F350 4x4. My most favorite truck to date. I had the trans rebuilt and put a complete Banks kit in it, Fantastic! Drove it like that for years averaging 24/25 mpg on 35’s with 4.10’s. The most fun truck and sneaky fast was a 97 F350 4x4 with a Banks intercooler, Beans Diesel D66 turbo, Adrenaline HPOP, Baby Swamps injectors, TS 5 position chip, MBRP exhaust and was also on 35’s with 4.10’s on a built transmission. I have to say you have given a very fair representation of the gen 2 Cummins powered trucks. I have a 2000 2500 HD 6speed that I bought in 2002. It has about 205k on it now and is a daily driver. The dash went to hell and I put a dash topper on it. Hard to tell it even there. Rebuilt the front end when it got too loose to pull a trailer safely. All new tie rods ends, track bar and ball joints. Also added the stearing box bar with the bearing and it helped a ton. Transmission and transfer case have both been rebuilt and brought up to 2003 specs. 400hp clutch and HD pressure plate. Rails were recently ran and new 2003 spec 275hp injectors with new injector tubes installed. After the 2nd injector pump failure, an AirDog Raptor was installed on the frame rail. She runs like a raped ape! Currently saving up for a nice paint job and new Mickey Thompson III wheels, lol 😎✌️

I own a 97 12 valve single cab long bed 4x4 5 speed. I believe it is the absolute best 90’s diesel to own. I owned a 96 f350 single cab dually with the 7.3 in it. I had absolutely no luck with it. It was a sub 120k miles truck all stock grandpa owned. My biggest issue I had was with the injector circuits being in the valve cover gaskets, my passenger side bank gasket was cracked and the power feed crossed with the power return, fried my injectors, And idm. After I got all of that taken care of anytime I was driving in a field at slow speeds the engine would cut out and run terrible, sometimes I would loose one bank of the engine. Turns out after hours of diagnostic time. It also fried the pigtails that plug into the valve cover gaskets. Aside from that and about 5 cam position sensors. I sold it and bought a 24 valve. After my handful of issues with it. I bought a unmolested 97 12 valve with 90k miles. And it’s has been an amazing piece of equipment with no complaints! All the trucks where super reliable with very minimal issues. Had more front end problems with one of my second gen than any of the other obs trucks but seemed to see more oil leaks coming from the 7.3’s nothing major but they just always seemed a little bit wet down in the valley as where the only leak I ever had on my second gens was one had a front timing cover gasket leak and sometimes would see fuel leaks coming from injector nuts. Super easy fixes. In a perfect world I would want to have an obs with a 12v or 24v in it just for the power capability aspect but honestly you can’t go wrong with either of these options

Very cool comparison, I drive 7.3s all day for work, but I own a 12v ram 3500, because of simplicity and power. It is just so far ahead of the 7.3 as far as power goes with next to no headaches.

@@trevorlarsonn True but not much you can do up in the northeast unless the 1st owner sprayed the entire under carriage

1995 12v owner with 270k miles, this truck is a beast and with some upgrades I’m pushing roughly 600 hp definitely disappointed they didn’t offer crewcabs but other than that I have no real complaints
