I couldn't capture footage from my consoles when I made this video, so most footage is captured from arcade versions andI had to use footage from an old LP for the 3 Dirty Dwarves part. For some reason the Rastan footage became jerky after I rendered it.

How about River City Ransom? In the Nes days, gear, leveling, stats, buying a crazy amount of moves, semi open world. Well ahead of its time. Scott Pilgrim was heavily inspired by it. Also has a new one, River city underground. Arguably the best combat and combo system around.

There's also Night Slashers, which is a pretty good beat-em-up for the arcades. It's horror-themed, meaning you'll be beating up zombies, werewolves, executioners, vampires, the Grim Reaper himself, and other monsters. However, what makes this game stand out is the massive amounts of gore. I mean, the enemies themselves are already gory enough (For example, the zombie enemies are either armless, with their organs exposed, jawless, eyeless or with their ribcages exposed), but it gets even gorier when they're killed, because they'll melt or die in a gory fashion, with lots of blood and organs. This game has 3 characters, all of them having a good number of moves and special moves, not to mention they can do the crowd control moves and screen-filling magic moves, at the cost of HP. Not to mention, you'll be seeing lots of wrestling moves, either from your characters or the enemies. If you love gory games and always wanted to suplex the Grim Reaper, this is the perfect game for you

I have Cadillacs and Dinosaurs on MAME on my smartphone. I play it at least once a week for years now. It is such a great game and does feel perfect, not so stiff like other beat em ups. A real masterpiece. It is so satisfying to hit enemys. In my opinion only Batman Returns on the SNES comes close to the hit-feeling...you can almost feel Batman's headbutts.

Yeah, I used some old LP or something, I made the video back before I could capture console footage myself, so I had to use emulators/some one else's long plays whenever I wanted to capture footage from non-PC games. The gameplay video I posted later on that you left a comment on was captured on a legit Saturn, so it should look more "normal"

Nice, I love beat em ups and didn't know a lot of the ones you showed and talked about. And my love for the genre began with Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. Me and some buddies of mine skipped classes in 2nd grade (!) to go and play that game, which is legendary among certain people were I'm from. And you said you find Streets of Rage boring, but have you tried the fan game Streets of Rage Remake? I think that particular game is probably the best beat em up ever. The music alone makes this game a must play (superb remixes). You quipped about Day of the Tentacle near the end, cool game too, though for best point and click/adventure game I'd probably say The Longest Journey from the top of my head (though you probably meant best in the style of LucasArts games, then I kinda agree). Hope we see an obscure/hidden gem/underrated oldschool adventure game video soon! As always, thanks for the informative videos and keep em coming!
@sgamer-xc1bd

Wind Falcon Do you mean Beats of Rage (or something like that)? I've heard of it, but never played it. I ought to check it out some time. I think that I didn't get further than stage 2 last time I played Streets of Rage 2, it's just felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again. I guess it depends on a lot of the visuals, moves and feedback whether I get bored with a beat em up or not. There's long enough intervals and enough of side activities in a game like Top Hunter that I never become bored with the combat, while in something like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs or Battle Circuit you can take out multiple enemies at the same time and hitting them feels really good, so the higher enemy count doesn't matter as much. One of the only arcade memories I actually have is related to a beat em up game, which I played while on a holiday when I was 5 or 6. I've been trying to find its name for a long while now, my memories are so hazy that there's not much to go on. I actually have 3 top picks for point&click adventures: Monkey Island 3, The Longest Journey and Day of the Tentacle. Monkey Island: Visuals, cartoon vibe, just perfect athmosphere. Longest Journey: storyline, writing. Best "serious" adventure game I've played. Day of the Tentacle: Overall package and game design. Brilliant puzzles and great art style. The visuals aren't as picturesque as in other adventures, but the animation is great for '93 standards and the style is very consistent through out the game. I actually prefer Sam&Max Hit the Road content wise, but DotT does things technically so well that I think it's the best game in the genre for that reason. I have considered doing an episode on good adventure games not by Sierra&LucasArts, but my list might be a bit short at the moment. I've done reviews of DreamWeb and I Have no Mouth and I must Scream in Finnish and I have a couple of other "candidates", but I don't know if I've got enough material to work with yet.

90sgamer92Eng No, I didn't mean Beats of Rage (first time I hear of this). You can get (and check some info on) Streets of Rage Remake from here if you are interested - soronline.net/sorr_downloads.htm Another adventure game you might want to consider for the potential upcoming video is Beneath a Steel Sky (its legit freeware now), a personal favorite thanks to it being cyberpunk. At the moment outside of Sierra/LucasArts I can't think of other games too, at least not oldschool ones, but in recent years there have been some great 2d point and clicks that came out like Gemini Rue and Primordia, so maybe you can mix old and new games for more material.

Nice list I just subbed. Have you ever played the Yakuza or Shank games? I think those are underated/overlooked beat em ups as well. Maybe you can do another list covering modern beat em ups
@sgamer-xc1bd
@sgamer-xc1bd 9 жыл бұрын
I haven't played the Yakuza games (nor God Hand for that matter), but I've seen some footage of the PS3 games. It's like a mix of Shenmue and a 3D beat em up, right? To be honest, I don't really know that many good 3D brawlers (besides more modern God of War clones). Your top 5 video pretty much covers most games I know, and some I hadn't heard of before! Well, there's atleast The Bouncer by Square on PS2. And I guess No More Heroes and Mad World on Wii count as well? I also really liked the Tekken Force and Devil Within modes in Tekken 3-5. Tekken Force was more of a traditional beat em up with side scrolling levels just done with polygonal graphics, but Devil Within had more 3 dimensional levels and even platforming if I recall correctly.
@JmanRising
@JmanRising 9 жыл бұрын
90sgamer92Eng Thanks for watching my video, Yeah Yakuza is basically a mix of Shenmue and 3d beat em ups, and just a fun series overall if your into brawlers with more depth than just beating people up.God Hand is great too if your looking for a good challenge. God Hand also lets you customize your move sets and combos which gives the game great replay value for me. As good as some of the 3d beat em ups I mentioned are, they just don't make as many as they used to. Hack n slash games like God of War have kind of taken over Beat em ups. Madworld was cool but No More Heroes is more of a hack n slash in my opinion. And Tekken Force and Devil Within were a pretty cool add on to those games too. But they still do make some 2d beat em ups like Shank And Double Dragon Neon but are few and far between.

One of the reasons why games like Armored Warriors had such a good soundtrack is it's when Capcom was letting Q sound handle the music for them. Marvel Super Heroes, the Darkstalkers franchise, and even many of the Alpha games were all handled musically by Q sound. When they no longer utilized the company, is about when Capcoms fighters felt like they were losing much of their quality in mechanics as well as music design. However, despite many short comings of Street Fighter V, I will say that the soundtrack has gotten interesting again. Hopefully Capcom will further make good on a promise to work with it's many IP's again rather than just trying to milk Street Fighter and Resident Evil time and time again. Some of these old japanese companies need to realize they can wind up the next Konami at any time by not branching out and making just a few wrong moves that turn them from legend to utter losers. Capcom and Sega have been two companies circling the drain for some time, and both have only in recent times made vows to do better by their fans.

Sadly we'll never see a golden era like that again, even if they pull their shit together, they just cant produce games as rapidly as they did back in those days (even though, in my opinion those 90s games look and sound objectively better than modern 3D games like SF V, which took ages to develop). It's so absurd, when game budgets and development times have ballooned so much with outh the games even looking beter often times.

I've played Spinal Breakers, but it was a run n gun. But I haven't heard of those other two, thanks for the recommendation. Big Trouble looks good!
