18:08 anyone else love generic buttmetal riffs in early 2000s stuff? 18:50 very much agree. Even if the game stinks, it's still good to document and use to broaden our understanding of how gaming evolves and how one disaster of a game might have prevented another game from making the same mistakes, thus leading to a great game further down the line. It's this indirect way developers kinda learn from each other

I picked up furious karting because of this video. Also indycar series 2005 was exclusive to the Xbox in North America. That game nobody ever talks about. The game is tough as nails, maybe the best simulator racer on the console. The default setup for the car at each track was typically bad and it forced you to dive deep into figuring out how to set up your car in the garage. Had a lot of fun with this one back in the day, even was part of a league that would race weekly on Xbox live back in the day.

I played a bit of Iron Phoenix. I remember learning about it via, I think, Next Gen magazine where they had it in a feature with (the canceled game) Vultures, as some sort of "new type of fighting game" type story, since both were these arena focused team vs team type affairs rather than 8-way movement fighters like Tekken or straight-on 2D ones. Don't believe I played it back in the day, or even spent much time on it now on my modded Xbox - mostly because that sort of "behind the back" swinging wildly around combat isn't very... finessed. The Xbox *had Unreal Tournament 2* for that kind of thing as well, with better online, presentation and more content _in addition_ to letting people flimsily swing around melee weapons while bouncing off the walls in arenas. I applaud it for trying something new, but... I mean, compare to this Sega (and Platinum's) later Anarchy Reigns and you're like, "OH! _That's how the idea should've been executed!"_ lol. At least as far I'm concerned - *that* games has a really good fighting/brawler feel. I think a better modern version of Iron Phoenix would be Naraka Bladepoint, or even Naruto: Shinobi Strikers, so to Iron Phoenix's credit, props to it for somehow resembling relevant, successful titles in 2024. It's clear the devs at Sega Sammy were onto something with Iron Phoenix then, I'll give 'em that. I DEFINITELY need to check out Furious Karting though, from the sounds of it. I can look at the style of the characters in the cutscenes and immediately see the same kind of personality as something like Total Overdose, the Outlaw Sports games, State of Emergency, or Saints Row. That's actually _really_ fascinating to me to see; cart racers are 100% always cartoony fare, so seeing anything else just begs the question as to why more people don't take that kind of stab? If only to stand out in the marketplace. Hearing that it plays well is icing on the cake. I'm also happy to hear about Toxic Grind... mostly because it reminds me I need to play more _Dark Summit,_ lol. Now THAT'S an extreme sport/dystopian future story-focused hybrid game I actually enjoyed! This was a fun topic/video! Seeing Iron Phoenix (and mentioning Unreal Tournament 2 up there) reminds me of other arena/fighting/combat games that are obscure on the Xbox now. If you revisit this topic again, I suggest looking into DeathRow, WarPath, and STAKE Fortune Fighters on backlogged. I cannot, in any universe, imagine those titles having many ratings either, lol.

I had both Toxic Grind and SeaBlade as a kid. Got both from a Hastings store when I lived in Southern Oklahoma back in the late 2000s; I have more memories of SeaBlade, mostly because I couldn’t finish the first level and even back when I was a kid, I could tell how cheaply made the game seemed to be, just from the CG models that moved around like they were in a PowerPoint presentation during the cutscenes. Years later, I picked up a cheap copy just to show my friends how awful the game was. I did think it was comical how the game advertised its website in the loading screen, which is still available for viewing on the Internet Archive.
