Obscured by Clouds, Pink Floyd's soundtrack to the 1972 film La Vallee, produced such titles as Burning Bridges, The Gold It's In The . . . , Wot's . . . Uh The Deal, Mudmen, Childhood's End, Free Four and Stay. Coming between Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon, can this soundtrack album still hold up? #pinkfloyd #Obscuredbyclouds #albumreviews #historyofrock

Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd was the band's leader and chief songwriter in the early days, penning their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. This would lead to the release of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Their live shows were equally inventive incorporating unique light shows. However due to Syd's intake of LSD mixed with a breakdown involving schizophrenia, he would gradually be pushed out of the band he fronted, being replaced with David Gilmour on guitar. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup with Roger taking more of a songwriter role. A Saucerful of Secrets was the only album to feature all five band members. More came out in 1969. Pink Floyd was still finding their voice, focusing more on albums rather than singles. It was on Ummagumma where concert versions of Astronomy Domine, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and Saucerful evolved their sound. The studio disc contained experimental tracks. The album sold well proving there was life for Pink Floyd after Syd. In 1970, Atom Heart Mother proved to be a success with the 23 minute instrumental suite orchestrated by Ron Geesin. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, likening three animals: Dogs, Sheep and Pigs to various classes of society. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd before he officially left, leaving Dave and Nick to reunite with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans with Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Pink Floyd's legacy has continued to inspire fans and aspiring musicians, myself included.

Yes one of my favourites, I bought the album when it was released and found that some tracks suffered from sibilance especially the last track the instrumental on side one. Apparently this was a first pressing and the second was OK (According to R. Waters). The album is good enough to benefit from a remix and re-release.

Terrific review. IMO, the 2 most underrated albums in Pink Floyd's catalogue are Obscured By Clouds and the Division Bell. The only bad track on Obscured By Clouds is the final track and there is not a bad track on the Division Bell.

I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment of the album. I've outgrown the relentless pessimism of the later years and have found a greater appreciation for the works during this period of the band's history. They don't have the fine studio polish of those later albums but there is an ethereal and otherworldly quality that paints such vivid pictures in your mind. In Free Four you can hear the seeds of Roger's obsession with his father's death and would appear on other albums in one form or another. A more casual fan will not give these albums much attention and that is ultimately their loss.

Excellent review! I agree this album is an overlooked gem and showcased their ability to write and perform straightforward rock and gentle ballads. I guess they didn’t bother much with some of the titles though. Ha David resurrected Wots the Deal for his 2006 tour with Rick performing that wonderful piano solo again.

I've always considered "Stay" an overlooked masterpiece. Its so melancholy and haunting. I've always regretted that they never performed this live, even in their later years when Rick and Dave performed some older tracks such as "What's the Deal" I thought that this would be a great alternative. Overall a hidden gem of an album.

Honestly didn't really know this album until I went through and gave it 2-3 listens to track with your reviews. I like it! Thanks for continuing to do these reviews!

Few people seem to fully appreciate that although OBC was released before Dark Side, by this time The Floyd had already written and toured with the proto Dark Side material. So, in way, one can look on OBC as being a sequel to Dark Side. Also, I regret that so many people seem to underrate the title track. At the time, synthesizers were very innovative and slide guitar wasn't too common either. For those present at the release of OBC, this track was a standout and remains one my all time favourites.

I have to admit I had forgotten how good this album was until last year when I brought the 6th Individual Volume of the Early Years box set. To be honest, I don't think I had heard the album since I brought it on vinyl back in the 70's and even though I replaced most of my Floyd collection on CD, that slipped my mind. I very much think it slipped Gilmour and Waters minds too because they never play a damn thing off the album live and even today they still ignore it. It's as if the album does not exist 😊😊😊. It is an album that very rarely gets mentioned in polls and many discussions about the band. Yet I think it is well worthy of the GOLD Fish and there are some really GREAT! tracks on the album. As a matter of fact, the only thing that separates this album from Meddle is that it does not have a long epic track like "Echoes". The album has always been highly underrated and yet I think it's one of their better albums and certainly not an album to ignore like even I did over all those years. As for Gilmour and Waters ignoring it I would like to know "Uh What's The Deal" 😊😊😊.
@ianfortier6796

It wasn't completely ignored, Gilmour played "Wots... Uh, the Deal" throughout his 2006 tour and was as awesome as ever. I agree that both David and Roger should have played more from this album throughout the years. Not playing Stay in 2006 with Rick on tour with him was a missed opportunity.

I actually thought I wasn’t gonna like this album due to the fact that it came out after Echoes and got in the way before Dark Side but now I’ve listened to it I actually like it! The instrumental “When You’re In” is an epic piece to put together, it kicks ass simply. “Burning Bridges” is as good as Time from Dark Side, David and Rick’s vocals together are beautiful and brilliant for this song. “The Gold” is also a kick ass rocker and it sounds like something Led Zeppelin would produce. Childhoods End, Free Four, and Stay are really good. However I don’t think it’s as good as Echoes but this album is still a good album. But still I gotta give it a spotted fish tho.

Love all of these tunes, love the album and always in my top 6 albums that stand out from all the rest. I also think this is their only album that works as on shuffle as playing the album. Childhoods End proves David could write lyrics when he put his mind to it and had the confidence (difficult to maintain confidence while in the presence of a lyrical genius, especially one who is as demeaning as he is arrogant). Free Four, wow! what a song! If only Roger in that style for some of his stuff on The Wall and The Final Cut, and David persevered with his own lyrics, how much better would those later albums have been?

Of all Floyd albums, Atom Heart, Meddle and Obscured all present Gilmour at his most melodically inventive. Dark Side has great blues playing from him but it is the start of his inexorable slide into bluesy pentatonic pedal-processed noodling, until by the mid 1980s he was a prisoner of his of own style.

With the debate whether Pink Floyd purposely synched DSOTM with the Wizard of Oz or not, I am a believer they did. Obscured by Clouds and More tipped me off. Not only does the music and lyrics synch up too well but they have experience with synching their music to movies, twice. They even disgussed the experience they gained making music to match movies in interviews. So the experience and ability is right there in their arsenal.

Just my opinion, but I have always felt that "The gold, it's in the ..." is the final words of a dying man, who croaks before he can reveal the all-important whereabouts. "What's, uh, the deal?" is cod 'hippy talk' - someone trying to be cool, man!

Fantastic album. All tracks are good. The film is terrible. This album and "More" soundtrack are really good for learning and playing guitar especially acoustic.. I just got the free guitar tabs online and eventually played a lot of these songs. It's worth a try and, if you like the music, you will get there.

I think free four sounds like a beatles song from the 64-66 era.

People complain they like Darkside but not Pink Floyd because Pink Floyd never made another album that sounded like it. I.E. they don't like those one side of album length songs on Meddle, Wish You Were Here, and Animals. I always tell them to listen to this album. It's recorded at the same time as Darkside was being written and covers many of the same themes. And it has a lot of Rick on it.

Funny I never heard someone complain about not liking Wish You Were Here if they liked Dark Side, but I definitely agree that Obscured by Clouds is a more conventional album that general classic rock fans can enjoy.

Great album. I saw parts of the movie but the scene of the pig slaughter was horrible.

@Christopher Bassett - Agreed 100%. I watched because of the Pink Floyd connection but that scene totally turned me off from the movie with no intention to watch again.

Totally underrated, when you consider what was about to explode...1973 to 79,,,, six classic albums, only matched by The Beatles ten years earlier....If you take Floyd, Yes, Genesis til 77,Elp,,,,Crimson,Caravan etc....The music generated in this Prog Decade, surpassed everything before and has never been matched since...Magenta, Transatlantic, IQ, Mostly Autumn and Karnataka are today’s Prog Heroes... But it’s back to 71/72****73/ 79, that we have to be grateful for, plus all the modern bands listed above all go back to the seventies heroes.. Sorry l forgot to mention Meddle, Foxtrot, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Selling England, Yes Album etc etc,,,,the list is endless... So go and see Gabriel, Steve Hackett, plus whatever Yes lineup still give performances that we Prog Heads dream about... Yes in Nottingham Concert Hall this Saturday evening, so 150 minutes plus from the Progmeisters themselves here we go.. David Coyne..
