We raise our glasses to Barrie Kosky's new production of Die Fledermaus. A dazzling spectacle unfolds not only on stage - behind the scenes things are also heating up. Bat wings are sewn, glittering beards are glued on and the facades of Viennese houses unfold. The whole thing is accompanied by constant waltz music. Operetta is often misunderstood as shallow and harmless - Vladimir Jurowski explains why this is a fallacy in the case of Johann Strauss. Like most of the time, everything ends in ecstasy and the champagne brings down the bourgeois façade.
