Did you know rising CO2 levels affect ocean acidity which makes it harder for corals and shellfish to build their calcium carbonate shells.
Alex Dainis demonstrates how rising carbon dioxide levels from burning fossil fuels can impact our oceans. Through a hands-on DIY experiment, you'll see firsthand how increased CO2 levels lead to ocean acidification, affecting marine life and ecosystems. Join us as we explore the importance of ocean conservation and discuss actionable steps to mitigate the effects of climate change on our planet's vital oceans.

We need to have massive phytoplankton farms that can be seen from space. Whatever the sea creatures don’t eat, we can skim off of the surface and process into food for poor countries around the world. Distribution will be cheap if the farms are just off the poor country’s shore line and the processing factories are local.

That's an interesting idea! Iron fertilization experiments for phytoplankton have been an active area of research.

Along that vein I think that 'farming' seaweed forests in unused areas of shallower ocean would give way for fish spawning, increase o2 production while using up the extra co2 that has been absorbed into the ocean.

More than half of the oxygen on the planet is produced by algae like seaweeds! It's an interesting concept for sure.

That's a really neat demo! I'm assuming that crashing waves are what trap CO2? Oh snap, rain too- hence acid rain! 🤯 So- for crustaceans, the acids neutralize the basic compounds they use to make their shells? Does that make it take too long to make the shells or is it a thing where thwy cant shed their old shell properly? I love your videos btw! Planting trees can certainly help, but afaik it's more a thing that we need to legislate away since big business does most polluting, no?
@museumofscience

Exactly right; a lot of atmosphere-ocean carbon dioxide exchange occurs through bubbles, which can occur in crashing waves! Crab shells are made of both a protein called chitin and calcium carbonate, while other organisms have wholly calcium carbonate shells. Marine life tends to have a narrow tolerance of acidity and alkalinity it can thrive in, and if it is too acidic it can be difficult for these organisms to build their shells, or their shells will be deformed and unable to sufficiently protect them. Broader societal changes are going to be necessary to combat the climate crisis, but individual efforts can certainly put pressure on larger stakeholders to do the right thing!

Corals especially do poorly when faced with environmental stressors! Coral bleaching occurs when the photosynthesizers which live inside (zooxanthellae) them can no longer survive to feed the coral. Several bleaching events are associated with relatively acidic ocean conditions.

Global warming considerations should also reduce ocean acidification...
@museumofscience

That's true! Carbon dioxide dissolves into seawater and undergoes reactions to become carbonic acid. Lowering the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide should also slow this process.

Hempcrete will absorb CO2 turning it into stone. Similar to Roman concrete I wonder if it would be beneficial if making wave brakes and artificial reefs out of it.

What we can do is not in the realm right now of something affordable and easy. Nuclear energy comes to mind, but it's not affordable or easy. Solar doesnt generate enough energy for the amount of space takes up, and is unreliable. Wind has the same problem. Both which use mayerials that require materials that are exotic, such as gold, copper, lithium, aluminum. We only have so much of that stuff
@JJ-qo7th
@JJ-qo7th 5 ай бұрын
Nuclear energy is only cost prohibitive in the sense that there's a lot of bureaucracy in the way. Solar energy is actually ridiculously abundant. I did the calculations for my metro area and found that about 0.25% of the total land could be used generating energy through solar collection and would cover both daytime and nighttime needs with adequate storage. I haven't done the calculations for wind. Point is, the solutions are not only right here, but they're not half as difficult or costly as you've been led to believe.

His reply on solar and wind wasn't about cost so much as it was consistency, and the amount of real estate required. Smaller, more powerful solar cells and batteries are needed

Wood ash is alkaline, so maybe we could add that to some areas via aerial scattering. Obviously it would be far better for humans to reduce production of co², but reality is that those in power have been stubbornly obstructing progress in doing so.

Would not the production of wood ash just produce more CO2. And then adding it to the ocean during the process of neutralization wouldn't that also release CO2.

Dont blow bubbles in the ocean. Or, create more runoff. If the landmasses greenland and antartica were exposed to the atmosphere, perhaps the ocean can balance itself.

We should ban car-centric urban development, semis, and invest heavily into clean public transportation and bike infrastructure. But I bet NA won't ditch its precious cars even in the face of the threat of planetary destruction

Removing large numbers of cars from the road would be a huge game changer for reducing carbon emissions! Clean public transit and bike infrastructure is certainly the way to go; we're seeing progress towards that front right here in Boston, though we can always do better.
