Nice work John! We were out there as well and noticed the same 'silted' up look of the Ocean and also had better success in the clearer waters (Cartright).. We were a bit more Sea Bass focused and limited on them, but shifted to Fluke and only ended with four keepers to 22". With the cooler water thought we might even bump into a Cod...no luck. Definitely a beautiful day on the water. On a side note, we never caught a single Porgy all day...strange when a few of the guys fishing with me were using squid and peanut bunker most of the day. First day I can ever remember at Montauk without a single Porgy harassing us.

Good to see them elsewhere besides Long Island sound lol, I was out surf fishing Saturday morning looking for bass on the south shore, went biteless 130am to about 6 and by than the sun was well up so I switched to fluke fishing and 20 mins later got my pb from the surf at 25.5” and 6.6 lbs , I kept fishing for another hour and a half but the wind started picking up quick and just killed all the current I had so I finally threw in the towel, a lot of hours for one bite but at least it was a decent fish when that one bit came lol

Bass bite north jersey surf slow also and fluke decent. I decided to take fluking more seriously, 7' rod hi lo rig with 6"gulp grub & 4"mullet & 2oz sinker. Or bucktail & mullet teaser. After 2 whole days only 1 short. Could you please elaborate on what you said about wind and current effect and please any tips greatly appreciated. Wind has been shifty but mostly se or sw with waves always moving nw. Thank you

Fluke much like bass like moving water, they sit on the bottom behind a piece of structure(drop offs in the sand, rocks, ledges) and out of the current and wait for the water to push baitfish over them and than pop out for an easy meal, while the current is moving at a good pace the fishing is the best, too fast and the bite slows, too slow and the bite slows and the right pace tends to b different for every spot lol. What I was saying in the original comment was that the wind blowing the opposite direction the current was running and the current slowed down too much to b productive anymore (wind against tide slows it down, wind with tide speeds it up) My advice would b to shrink the profile of the gulps ur using, biggest I tend to use from shore is 4” grubs, I’ll do a 3-4” mullet top hook and a 4” grub bottom, if I notice one is doing better than the other I’ll switch to that one for both, also if fishing ocean beach or back bays the 4” gulp shrimp can do great. I prefer plain jigheads to bucktails on bottom from shore just cuz if I snag it on something I feel slightly less bad about losing it lol, also try slightly lighter weight so it pushes in the water more naturally, I typically use 3/4-1oz jigheads, if the water is really pushing and I can’t find bottom I switch to a 1 oz sinker with a single dropper loop about 8-12” above with 1 hook and gulp, if u still can’t feel bottom than go heavier but I’d start light and slowly increase the weight

How would one determine whether or not to rig a skirted teaser on the top loop of a bucktail rig? Is it dependent on depth or bait profile, or something else? Does one start with the skirted teaser and slim down if there are no hits, or the other way around? What would be the strategy on a half day party boat trip, max depth 80 feet or so?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing Ай бұрын
Real easy. In the smaller waters, like Long Island Sound and Shinnecock Bay, I often use just a plain hook. In the ocean and Peconic Bay I use the silicone skirt for the larger profile. It's just a matter of where I expect larger fluke on larger baits.

Hey Skinnee- Noticed on the boat the new engines have a orange piece on the connector for flushing? Is that something aftermarket he put on to make it easier? Or is that a new thing Yamaha did? We have outboards of the new versions from 6 months ago and we have triples so it’s difficult to get a hose connected on the inside one and not loose the gasket? If you could shed some light I’d appreciate it!

Hey john I've got 1 for ya. I moved from the east coast to California recently, so now im targeting halibut instead of fluke. Would you still stick with your bucktail jigs to target halibut on the west coast? My brain is telling me to try it, since the fish seem to act the same. Thanks! Ive got a few of your work!

When we first shut down the current was so strong (2.7-3mph) it didn't make sense to stay there. Then we had around 1.3mph, which was OK. That also went up to 1.8 and had us scoping. Had we stayed there we would have used the motor. Instead we moved back to the original spot because of the tide change. Perfect drift there the rest of the trip.
