Ocean sunfish are the largest bony fish living in our oceans. No, they don't reach the size of a cartilaginous whale shark, but they can still jump out of the water like a great white! Ocean sunfish are found throughout the world's oceans and spend some of their time basking in the sunlight at the top of the water column. Other times they'll dive deep in search of prey. They can also produce lots and lots of babies!
Scientific Name: Family - Molidae
Range: temperate and tropical oceans around the world
Size: 10 feet (3m) in length, 13 feet (4m) in height, and weigh up to two tons
Diet: algae, small fish, squid, crustaceans, brittle stars, and jellyfish
Lifespan: potentially over 100 years!

Saw one in the reserve outside of the breakwater in Newport this past weekend. It gave us a glorious show for about fifteen minutes before diving down. It was a magical treat.

@@AnimalFactFiles Newport Bay in Southern California has made much of the area a reserve so that there are large populations of wildlife to see there including Garibaldi, large dolphin pods, whales and seals.

@@AnimalFactFilesWhat books/resources do you recommend on this fish? Some sources say they feel no pain, and have only a rudimentary train stem, so they end up being with big chunks of body eaten.

0:57 - "Swimming Heads." Yes, exactly right! :) 2:43 - You gotta love this type of mutually beneficial cooperation. 3:47 - There seems to be some sort of connection or correlation between large, slow-moving animals and longevity. Another example is the Greenland Shark. Do you think there is a connection, or is this just coincidental?

I would say there are probably so many other factors at play that contribute to extended longevity in different species. Where animals live, their lifestyle, their diet, the pressures on them... so much can contribute. Though I do definitely see where you're coming from because animals like whales and turtles/tortoises can live long, as well. But then as a human I keep hearing a sedentary lifestyle is bad, so idk what to believe. ;)
