Probably the most dangerous shark there is. Read the accounts of shark attacks on sailors in WWII after their ships were sunk. Almost all the sharks that did that were Whitetips. The Great White, the Bull Shark and the Tiger may get more press but the Whitetip has racked up a huge body count over the years.

These guys have nerves of steel. I am not paranoid of sharks but there are four species (out of around 480) that if I know one is near by, I am getting out of the water PDQ. Oceanic Whitetips are one of them. They are highly aggressive with a history of unprovoked attacks on people. A very dangerous specie of shark and known man eater.

In fact they are the likely culprites in almost every major maritime disaster involving shark attacks, and more to the point you tend only to meet them when you are a considerable distance from shore making escape from them far more difficult. I feel within my rights to say that I consider the oceanic white tip to be the most dangerous shark. But feel free to dispute me.

@@issacdragon3834 Wrong. The Whitetips have a much higher body count. Nearly all the sailors that have been set adrift by the sinking of ships in war fell to whitetips. On the USS Indianapolis alone they lost more than 150 to sharks. The Bull Shark may have more attacks but they don't have as many kills. Most attacks by Bull sharks are not fatal but nearly every attack by whitetips is because you are out on the high seas a long way from shore and are probably treading water with no chance for medical treatment. Something tells me you have never been out of sight of the shore on the ocean and don't know a thing about the open ocean sharks.

I would have to argue that, from wikipedia - Famed oceanographic researcher Jacques Cousteau described the oceanic whitetip as "the most dangerous of all sharks".[13] Despite the greater notoriety of the great white shark and other sharks habitually found nearer the shore, the oceanic whitetip is suspected to be responsible for many fatal attacks on humans, as a result of predation on survivors of shipwrecks or downed aircraft.

Every time OWT is mentioned, the USS Indianapolis is mentioned, I think out of turn. It is one thing to be a body floating on the surface, perhaps injured; in this case the risk of being attacked by a shark, and in particular by an OWT, is particularly high, it is very different being a diver in a dive, in which case the probability of being mistaken for prey is very close to 0. The estimated number of deaths caused by oceanic white tips must be way ahead of the great whites, tigers and bulls. Lets just take the stats from the web link I posted - Great Whites have 431 confirmed attacks between 1580 and 2011. The Oceanic White Tip has just 14 confirmed attacks. However there are numerous cases where the Oceanic white tip is believed to have pretty much eaten their way through ship loads of people - USS Indianapolis, The Steamship Nova Scotia & The Cape San Juan.

Nope. That’s an accurate representation of what it’s like to be in the water with Oceanics. They are very graceful and a beautiful species but they like to take names and kick ass. They’re pretty quick to get all the names. Around my dive sites, the Red Sea, they are responsible for many attacks, including probably all of the fatalities. Given the lack of accessible medical facilities, a decent nip would probably prove fatal. The behaviour shown in the clip is pretty typical. The reaction of the divers, also typical. I’d have been out of the water sooner. Not due to the number of sharks but to their change in behaviour. Especially the high speed pass. Time to make like a banana and split.
