Sorry. This might be the hardest game to watch in the collection.

This was the heartbreaking end of a great run from this era of the Phillies. My father and I were at this game. Together with a capacity filled stadium, we witnessed one of the most painful, gut-wrenching games of my life. Truly heartbreaking then and even more now knowing this was Doc's last chance. Halladay deserved to win a championship more as anyone. Losing 1-0 in game 5 of the NLDS was how a 102 win season and 5 year stretch of division championships came to a close.

From a Phillies' standpoint, to say that this was the hardest game to watch is a big understatement. Not only did the heavily favored Phils lose with Doc Halladay (R.I.P.) pitching, the final out was painful--literally and figuratively. Ryan Howard never really recovered from the torn Achilles' he suffered, and the Phillies haven't been heard from since. In one or two years, though, that could change. From a Cardinals' standpoint, it was the second of several playoff comebacks. Down by 10 1/2 games for a WC spot in late August, they made the playoffs, came back to upset the Phillies, then pulled off a bigger comeback against Texas to win it al.

That offense was tough to watch at times throughout the great run. I think this game was a reminder of that. Victorino and Werth really added a much need punch to that lineup when the big bats were cold.

Yes, it was, and I blame the GM, who made it clear that after 2010, they needed to 'change the approach", then gave the manager a contract extension. A Dallas Green-type manager in 2011 may have motivated the team for one more title. They got complacent after 2009, I'd say, and he got out coached in every series after 2008. I don't blame the GM for the sinking ship, as no one could have foreseen Howard getting hurt, but I do blame him for not having the guts to change managers after the offense disappeared in the Giants series in 2010

As a Cardinals fan, this was easily the most emotionally exhausting, stressful game of that 2011 Postseason run. I can sympathize with Phillies fans - watching your team lose to a team they should have beaten is extremely frustrating. Believe me - I have watched the Cardinals lose to lesser teams in many postseasons, and I always feel a little bad for fans of the team that loses such series' (except for the Cubs fans - they deserve to be miserable).

What amazes me about this game is that you literally can watch only the opening 10-15 minutes of the game and realize that the only run was scored in the 1st inning. As a Phillies fan, even 11 years later, I’m just waiting on one run to cross home plate to tie the score.

Even though it was in a losing effort, the late, great Roy Halladay was a master at work in the top of the 8th inning. After giving up a hit to the opposing pitcher and the next batter reaching on an error, with the heart of the order due up, most pitchers would implode or be removed. Instead, he was in complete command, giving up the sacrifice to move the runners, intentionally passing Pujols, making Berkman look overmatched (very rare) and rallying from a 2-0 count against Holliday. Even though he was in as bad a spot as a pitcher could be in, he never once seemed to be in any danger. That's what a Hall of Famer does.

This was arguably a more painful loss than Eagles losing to the Bucs in the NFC title game to close out the Vet

Hmm, and you think so? Not speaking as a Philly fan myself, but at least the Phillies had a recent World Series title under their belt from three years earlier via that core in 2008. That along with another already in way before that in 1980, which surely at least somewhat lessoned the blow from this painful series for them. That unlike the 2002 Eagles, who were still in the midst of their then long Super Bowl drought, and couldn't get out of their own way come postseason time when they were virtual annual contenders during the Andy Reid (and Donovan McNabb) era. That was until they finally broke through, and won it all exactly a very long decade and a half later in 2017 from that point too.

@@IWantToMature85 Right. And the Eagles did make the Super Bowl in 2004 as well, which they fell just short of winning too. Though I'd imagine that game was more frustrating than heartbreaking like the 2002 NFC Championship Game was however.

To think that the second consecutive Phillies season would come to an end with arguably their then best player in Ryan Howard at the bat, but once again couldn't get out of their own way come playoff time. Who knew their then impressive five year run would also be totally over from this point on, and would never again sniff the postseason as of this day? This you could also say was their best (or at least most talented ever squad, despite them losing in the first round), what with it being the sole year they'd win at least 100 games, and when they had the "Four Aces!" Their entire starting field that season was literally filled with players who either previously made, or would at least eventually play in the All-Star game, while their third best starting pitcher received Cy Young votes for that matter too! But with that being said, their team did get old quickly, and would soon drop back into the depths from which they'd had finally emerged from after so many lean years. That being even if they had some pretty good teams who had a string of painful near misses from 2001-2006 (save for when they barely had a losing record in 2002), until they finally broke through and reached the postseason in 2007 beforehand though.

For Phillies fans, this was the end of two eras: The period that was, in my honest opinion, the Golden Era for the Phillies, and Howard's prime. Howard was NEVER the same player after the Achilles injury, and we were never the same team after this game. Up until we played the Yankees this year, I had never seen the ballpark as packed as it was in this game. However, if we play hard enough, we might be back in it this year! 2018, BABY!

@Quinn Wheatley I'm sorry, man. I actually re-read this exact comment of mine last night and meant to take that part about hating the Cardinals out last night because I actually don't feel that way about them. It was something stupid I wrote without thinking. The loss just hurt immensely at the time, and we're still kinda being affected by it today. But as a baseball fan, it was a really well-played game by both sides. I also think Chris Carpenter pitched amazing. It sucks his career ended the way it did. But I wrote this stupid comment two years ago, and I wasn't thinking when I wrote it, so again, I'm sorry.

@Quinn Wheatley Yeah, they definitely both were true gamers. Such a great story about how they came up with the Blue Jays and became best friends and here dueled against each other in *the* pivotal game for both teams' seasons. I read and learned even more about it than I previously knew in the book about Halladay that Todd Zolecki published last year. It's a really great book.

But the Cardinals got what they deserved this year especially in Molina and Pujols last career game. Remember what the Cardinals did to the Mets in 2006? You should at least be happy the Cardinals got what they deserved this year for doing what they did to the Mets too. But I do have to say Molina and Pujols are class acts.
