Detailed instructions for tying a October Caddis Euro Nymph.
Recipe:
Hook: Barbless jig hook (here, a Lightning Strike JF2), size 12.
Bead: Tungsten bead, 5/32″, black.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Thread: 6/0 or 140 Denier, fluorescent orange.
Rib: Ultra Wire, brassie size, gold.
Abdomen: Amber Flexi Floss.
Collar: SLF Prism Dubbing, chocolate brown.
Hotspot: Tying thread.

Is the main purpose of a jig hook to keep the hook bend up? I was just wondering if it served any other function; and would the equivalent normal nymph hook be a just a size 12 2x long?

Yes, jig hooks along with the slotted bead help the fly to ride hook point up and in a more horizontal orientation. Most weighted nymphs tied on regular hooks tend to just hang vertically. And yes, a size 12 or even a 10 2x long nymph hook with a standard bead would be about right for size.
