Démonstration du registre grave de cette clarinette octocontralto, seul et unique modèle existant, fabriquée en 1971 par l'usine Leblanc France à la Couture Boussey. Cyrille Mercadier joue une anche "faite maison", constituée de deux morceaux d'anches pour clarinette contrebasse collées ensemble, car le bec est si imposant qu'il n'existe pas d'anches fabriquées pour cette clarinette octocontralto.
Demonstration of the low register on this unique octocontralto clarinet, made in 1971 by France Leblanc factory in La Couture Boussey. Cyrille Mercadier is playing a special "homemade" reed, made with two contrabass clarinet reeds assembled together, because the mouthpiece is so big and there is no reeds for this octocontralto clarinet !

As a bass clarinetist, I think that once you go past contrabass the low notes just aren't worth sacrificing sound quality.

+Malamute456 The problem with the Octocontras is that the bore is too small to be of any musical use. The bore of a octocontra-alto would have to be at least twice the size of a contra-alto to be of any musical use. Same thing with the octocontrabass to the contrabass.

Malamute456 it's low, I play bass trombone and tenor but same thing, the notes crack when you play them low because the air is being pushed slowly to play that low

My reed was a special model made by Vandoren, the biggest ever made foe a clarinet... So we did not think about the strength! But it was quite easy, like nr 3

A good demonstration of why you can't make a cylindrical tube too long - the actual sound goes missing and the other (false) sounds start to dominate.

This is an awesome low C E flat octocontralto clarinet. With your permission, this is for all clarinetists, please make more of those octocontralto clarinets for the whole world, including the U.S.A. And possibly, also with your permission, the Americans and the Canadians maybe create the different designs of both the low C E flat octocontralto clarinet and the low C B flat octocontrabass clarinet. This is one of my favorite videos. By the way, you speak very good English.

The low C on this instrument sounds Eb0, 1 octave below the lowest Eb on the standard 88 key piano. At A=440 this comes out to about 19.4 hz, which is right around the low end cutoff for human hearing (commonly quoted as 20 hz). Given the fact that neither the microphone used nor the speakers we all are using to listen were likely designed with pitches that low in mind, this recording sounds nothing like what it would sound like in person!

Is it possible to play in the clarion register on this instrument? I've heard it said that the octocontra clarinets could really only be played in the chalumeau register. How high have you been able to get this instrument to play?

This is impressive, but I'm thinking of getting a contra-alto clarinet--lower than the bass clarinet I used to play, but not as unwieldy as even the contra-bass clarinet and not going so low as to sound (as one person posted in another video) like agricultural machinery.

this octo is 5 meters long, and it is tuned in Eb, I guess a octosaxophone would be much longer to reach the lowest notes!!

[most] everybody [or at least "doyoureally95"] might want this rather than a car, but you can't hop on this horn and ride it into town for sundries. if it had wheels on it and a motor, i'd go into serious hock and buy one, and i'd be tooting this horn all the way into town and back. seriously, i played this monster's little brother [an ordinary contralto clarinet] and it sounded like a pipsqueak next to this gloriously basso [produndo] monster.

10 meters, as a saxophone sounds an octave higher than a clarinet of the same length and to go an octave lower the length of the tube must be doubled.

This clarinet goes to show that woodwinds are meant to have a medium-low to high pitch and that brass is supposed to have a meduim-high to low pitch. When woodwinds go too low like this, then number one it sounds scary And number two its not even a good tone and sound, you can actually hear the reed's slow vibration.. it wasn't meant to go that low.
