Cephalopods and in particular Octopus are likely the most intelligent invertebrate animals the world has ever seen. They can solve complex puzzles and seem to have individual variance in their behavior, akin to great apes having different technology between groups. Amazing that they seem to dream as well. This lines up with research showing their camouflage mechanism is not consciously controlled by their brain, rather it being instinctual.

We arent really sure what exactly are the conditions for life to apear. However, if for it to develop it needs an enviroment similar to earth, due to convergent evolution it would probably look very similar to life on earth. Of course, life COULD develop in enviroments that have nothing to do with earth... however, we have no proof that is posible. What we do have proof for is that life can apear on an earth like planet... because well, here we are. Therefore, until new evidence is found, we have to asume you need liquid water for life to exist, since every single known living creature needs water to survive

As humans we learn most things by being taught or shown, but many animals know things by instinct alone because the information has been passed down through their DNA. Sometimes i like to think they purposefully sorround themselves in ink to have a private thought lol

@@aldoushuxley5953 This is an old comment but incase anyone ends up here this is not true. It is mostly melanin, the same kind of dark pigment that is in human integumentary structures, and mucus (the mucus being what blocks gills and prevents the cloud from dissipating). There are other chemical components in various cephalopod inks that are thought to limit chemoreception in predators, as well as dopamine in concentrations high enough to potentially affect behavior.

If it comforts you any, she can very well leave her enclosure if she felt like it. Octopuses have been documented easily “escaping” their aquarium and entering the aquarium of other animals to eat them, swim around, etc. One even left their enclosure to throw a rotten fish at their keeper that was accidentally left in with their food. She deserves to be free, but the fact that she’s stayed there and hasn’t forced people to give her a larger enclosure through repeated escapes probably means she’s happy to at least some degree.

Most animals are much smarter than we give them credit for. I think part of the problem is that most people never see animals living in their natural environment. A dog living in your house is going to look really dumb because it has little hope of understanding how lights/doors/technology works, so they spend their time befuddled and lost. An animal living in the wild is in command of their surroundings. You can watch them thinking and making decisions all the time. They are very human-like.
