Octopus Faced With an Infinity Mirror - VIEWER REQUEST

The experiment in this video was requested by one of our loyal viewers.
The Request
"I want to see how they react to an optical illusion and/or the concept of infinity."
The Setup
"Buy a very good quality 'infinity' mirror and (depending on whether you can seal it or otherwise make it function underwater or not) either put it in the tank or directly outside the tank, to see how the octopus reacts to seeing it."
Hypothesis
"The octopus could ignore the infinity mirror completely, it could investigate it for a while then ignore it after that, it could try to get inside it, it could become scared and hide, it could try to destroy the infinity mirror."
This was a very interesting and fun request. We watched the video that was sent to us on infinity mirrors, and many other DIY videos. We immediately sprung into action and started working on building an infinity mirror. After a few failed attempts, we got the required optical illusion.
Initially, we planned on putting the mirror directly into the tank. We made a mirror that was completely waterproof and placed it in the water. Everything was fine except for the fact that the illusion was not as obvious underwater. We then tested it on the outside of the tank and seemed to have a much clearer "tunnel". So for this experiment, the infinity mirror was on the outside of the backside of the tank.
All that was left was to see whether or not Michael, our octopus, would ignore the tunnel, or attempt to go through it!
Michael spent a little over an hour in the tank with the infinity mirror. Approximately 10 minutes into the experiment, he no longer showed any interest in the infinity mirror. We repeated the experiment the following day with the same octopus, and he continued to basically ignore it.
Thanks for sending in your request. If there is a follow up experiment you'd like to see with the infinity mirror, we'd love to hear about it.

I think Michael wanted to go into the light tunnel. When he couldn’t go in, he lost interest. We have a big light mirror clock at home, and I had the same reaction ;-)

To me, the "infinity mirror" concept is when you are between two mirrors that reflect each other (the mirrors are 180 opposite each other) How would an octopus react to that situation?

I have a request. These videos are mostly challenges or reaction videos. How about giving the octopus a touch screen, touch pad or switches to control the environment? Instead of seeing the reaction of the Octo to coloured lights, how about letting him choose which light he likes, or change the temperature of the water or some other aspect of the environment like choice of music, or back ground image. Possibly have a touch pad with the image of 3 different favorite foods and let him pick what you introduce into the tank. Let's really see what is on an Octopus's mind!

Didn't the movie "Arrival" feature Cephalopod aliens and the attempt to communicate with them and understand their "concepts" of time, space, etc. ? I don't know what the octopus' reaction to other forms of optical illusions ( paintings, photos, etc.) would be ? From other videos, octopi can recognize photos of predators and react accordingly as well as react to colored pieces of cloth, discriminate between different colored "cups" and know which one hides a snack... But, can't figure out the plexiglass barrier ... They are absolutely fascinating creatures !

All it can see is a tunnel like in it's natural environment so, it checked it out and realised that it didn't go anywhere and thought "Ah dang, I thought I could escape!" Rats, Mice, Hamsters, Snakes, small Birds, Spiders... they're not pets like dogs, they just seem to constantly be thinking of ways to get out and back to nature, no matter how much effort we put into their enclosures... I had a Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula for a couple years, I thought she was outgrowing her tank so got her a bigger one. She was so desperate to get back to the smaller tank (I assume, just guessing because she was damn happy before I got the new tank) the side of the glass and fell off, split her abdomen and died. No more wild animals for me. Can't understand them, can't give them what they need like you can a domesticated animal like cats or dogs. They might hate their existence and you'd never ever even know...😕 Messed me up bad that spider. She used to come to the side of the small tank and clean her fangs, always when I was standing looking at her. She always faced me and stared at me like she knew I was there

Doesn't an octopus usually live in an environment that appears infinite all of the time, at least in two dimensions? Underwater, visibility is only limited by light and turbidity, yes? If you swim out from shallower water to where the continental shelf drops off, you might as well be floating in space.

I would come out of that tank & have some heavy-duty WORDS with any adjacent human that looks guilty. I would wrap a tentacle or 3 around his tongue, & loudly threaten its continued existence, in my best formal Octopussian, if he didn't speedily remove the offending doo-dad, postwith & forthhaste!!!(My Octopussian needs a lot of work.) Why do these dear beasties always have to be SMARTER than ME?????😫🐙👀 I will now enter my round ceramic house & pout dramatically. ☹️Hmmmmph.☹️ First I have to go buy a(very, VERY inexpensive) round ceramic house...
