This is the best octopus video ever. He seems to be putting on a show for the diver. Covering the large brain coral with a white umbrella was impressive!

Not a mimic octopus as some are.p commenting. All octopuses possess chromatophores and can change their color and texture. The actual mimic octopus is a newly discovered species that goes a step further and mimics actual marine animals in its environment such as the scorpion fish, sea snake, flounder, etc. For those that are interested, this is the Day Octopus and it is known for the unique way it hunts on the reef and sea bottom. They will stop in an area and quickly stretch out the web between their arms like a huge umbrella while their arms (not tentacles) search beneath in every crack, crevice, hole, etc. I love how their color will change when they make contact with something. Contrary to what people are saying, this octopus is not distressed and mildly annoyed at the most. It’s normal for an octopus to change its camouflage each time it stops during a hunt. They are tasty to many predators and because they lack a shell, they stay hidden when not hunting and constantly camouflage themselves when out and about. If this octopus felt threatened, it would first stretch itself out and stand as tall as possible to intimidate the diver. Then, if that didn’t work it would shoot black ink while quickly jetting away to a hiding spot. Also, his skin would have turned pure white indicating fear.

Nope, is not. A mimic octopus has a smaller body, longer arms and is striped black and white. This is a Day Octopus, very cool creature.

You shouldn't follow them so closely. You'd get to see them use their camouflage better if you give them more distance.
