In today's episode of Octopus Reacts our octopus is faced with another foreign object, the trusty hairbrush. Although he's never seen a hairbrush before, it does seem to remind him of something from the sea. Those of you that joined us during our octopus - sea urchin live event will notice that his approach is quite similar here.
We hope you're all enjoying our "Octopus Reacts" videos. Continue to send us your ideas for future episodes. We'll do our best to get to all your wonderful ideas.

Why is everyone saying shit about this on the comments? This is just a test tank, their actual enclosures are different, they are not put on stressful situations and they get new and interesting things to see and eat all the time, this isn't bad for them in any way They're just learning new things and living their lives, just 'cause an animal isn't on the wild doesn't mean it's sad. Of course, most of them are because of poor living conditions, but that's not the case for these octopusses, they are in a lab that studies behavior, they have a good quality of life AND if you still think the wild is always the answer, there they're more likely to get eaten or catch an illness or parasite I'm studying biology and I love to see animals in the wild, even with all the shit that happens, but if they have no problem being where they are in captivity then why would I complain ?

Pfft not to mention in the wild most octopuses get eaten within the first few days of life. Hence how many eggs they lay. Or the fact that they literally get arms ripped off if they’re able to escape an attack. That’d kill a human without medical attention but an octopus has the potential to survive AND regrow it. So an octopus in captivity that doesn’t face any dangers seems a lot better off if ya ask me... granted that’s if they have a good life like these.

It seems as though the octopus after careful deliberation and thoughtful touching was trying to recreate the texture of the hairbrush. We see not only a color change but the dotty seemingly bumpy surface of the brush. A study in how camouflage evolves?
@ambulocetusnatans
@ambulocetusnatans 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. I'm not sure if it's camouflage, or something else. Maybe he's just trying to see if he can make that shape. Maybe it's part of how his brain classifies and processes new objects. I don't know, but it is intriguing.

Wow, it looks like octo's trying to replicate the hairbrush texture and color? Do you think it could use some plants on the sides of the tank to keep it from crashing into it so hard? It changes color and looks a little pissed off when it hits the side, like any of us would. Octopus are the most astounding creatures!

I would love to see a crow-octopus competition for basic intelligence. I'll leave it to the experts to figure out how that might work, but it might be interesting.

Always remember, an octopus is just a snail gone wrong.

@The Altrusion 🤦 The only consolation about going on KZfaq is finding people who are even lower on the autistic spectrum than I am. 😄

Are there any other creatures who think things over as much as octopus do? He looks, thinks, touches, thinks, repeats. Very focused on the object. Classifying the object to see if it's food or something for shelter. Then I would say it ventures in the is it a tool area as well, what can be done with the object.

Otters are very inquisitive and intelligent. They like to touch and feel things, chew on them as a canine puppy would, and even play with things. They are just adorable!

Those of you in the Octolab MUST watch a new film on Netflix called "My Octopus Teacher". It's magnificently filmed with many insights in the life of one man who visits the same octopus, daily, for one year.
