One of my hands down favourite thing about cephalopod science is that if an animal isn't already a cuttlefish, nautilus or an octopus is that they just call it a squid, even when it is not actually part of that group. Spirulida? BOOM rams horn squid. Vampyrotheusis? VAMPIRE SQUID. It's just so funny to me lol
@chitinskin9860
@chitinskin9860 Жыл бұрын
The same thing sort of happens with any apocritan that isn't a bee or an ant. They just call them all wasps, even though they aren't in the vespid group, with some having more in common with bees than vespids (basically the same thing happening with the vampire squid and its relationship to octopus). Heck, sometimes it even extends beyond apocritans into sawflies, like wood wasps, they don't even have the classic wasp body shape. Though in this case it can be a lot more annoying because the word wasp has too many homonyms that have similar meanings, one of which is a paraphyly (excluding bees and ants), another that's basically just a synonym for apocritan, and one that's based entirely on local vernacular (European English uses wasp as a synonym for yellowjackets for some reason, still referring to higher taxons as wasps, but not the same kind).

Despite its name, the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) is neither a vampire or a squid, it is the sole living member of the order Vampyromorphida, which belongs to the superorder Octopodiformes, with the octopi (order Octopoda) being the closest living relatives of the vampire squid, squid are a wastebasket taxon within the superorder Decapodiformes, because the only members of the superorder Decapodiformes that aren't considered squid are cuttlefish (order Sepiida).

Yeah. What he said. Not all nerves transmit pain signals and it's likely that a proclivity for feeling pain in such an appendage would be maladaptive. But it is an interesting question and we might be able to tell if you are correct or not by examining the neurotransmitters and receptors being used in that filamentary nerve trail.

@@agentash0036 I was surprised at how fast they could actually move tbh. It was interesting to see just how fast they fled completely upon realizing it couldn't eat the sub. You'd also think the tentacles alone would be moving, but I loved seeing the squid's body get in close, then those tentacles come whipping out from behind. It was like a horror movie scene! lol

Thank you so much for this video. I love aphotic/deep sea fauna, and vampire squid are right at the top of the list. I've learned so many neat facts about them today. :3

Thank you so much, this video was really cool and informative. Deep sea creatures are so unnerving to me in general, so it's fascinating to learn about them. Thank you, Bryan! Your art was really helpful

My favorite little deep sea weirdo! I'm not usually a fan of sea creatures but this one definitely captivated me when Natural World Facts covered it. Love seeing it get more attention, especially with the art made by your friend.

Fun fact, human beings also create a bolus of their food before consuming it! It's one of the important stages between chewing and swallowing that keeps you from choking on your food and allows you to swallow everything at once. Basically they kinda slurp up some pre-chewed stuff and swallow it, just like us! I just think they're so gd cute haha

I can't figure which I enjoy more... The awesome creatures and learning many things I didn't know... Or the humorous and deeply human touches that make your channel the one of a kind it is!

The translated name for the vampire squid has got to be the absolute most METAL name I’ve ever heard made from scientists since the Death’s Head Hawk Moth, *_and only to find out that it eats detritus is underwhelming._* It’s still a pretty cool creature regardless!

I just think it’s very funny that the one octopus they decided to call a vampire just happens to be one that DOESNT use venom on its prey.

This is soooo good. Despite NOT actually showing the REAL animal, this scientifically biological detailed, awesomely voiced and nicely animated video is clearly a must-see for anyone that is interested in this creature.
