Oculus Quest Hand tracking! And how to manually install the update to get it now!

In this video, we're checking out the new Oculus Quest Hand Tracking. We'll go through the (short) Oculus Quest Hand Tracking Tutorial and show it in use in the home environment and the Oculus Browser. And even better, I'll show you how to manually install the V12 update to get Oculus Quest Hand tracking on your Quest now! Woohoo!
NOTE: You'll need to turn on the public test channel in the beta settings on the PC Oculus app if you're using Link. Let it update everything (app and drivers), then restart your PC and you'll be good to go!
Instructions to update to V12 to enable Oculus Quest Hand Tracking:
Download this file: www40.zippyshare.com/v/iuuhpk... (or from here 1drv.ms/u/s!Akn9zJfwXryUhdJeN...) Extract it and put the folder on your C drive (should be C:/OculusUpdate)
Put your Quest into update mode by turning it off, then long press the Vol- button and power button at the same time. Using the volume keys to change selection select Enable Sideload Update and then press the power button to select. Plug the quest into your PC.
Open the command prompt (search command in the start bar and you'll see it). Enter "cd.." and then again "cd..", then enter "cd QuestUpdate". Then enter "adb sideload update.zip".
That's it, your Quest will update to version 12. Wait a few minutes and you'll see the option to enable Oculus Quest Hand tracking in the settings. if it doesn't show up try restating the Quest.
IMPORTANT: If you're on a version lower than 11, you'll need to update to v11 first. Download this: drive.google.com/file/d/1k25I..., (or from here 1drv.ms/u/s!Akn9zJfwXryUhdJf1...) and then install just like the instructions above (move update11.zip to the QuestUpdate folder and use update11.zip instead of update.zip in the adb command).
Restart the Quest and the install V12 and you'll be good to go!

Think all those commands in CMD could be made into a BAT using the %~dp0 command for most of it? If so then it could also be used and launched from anywhere on the PC, at least for windows i would hope, Either way awesome video as always

I've been waiting for the update to show some older folks VR, hand tracking sounds like it could really reduce the barrier to entry for people that never played video games and dont understand controllers. Hopefully they will be adjustments in the future for different size hands. I got short fat fingers so it thinks I'm pinching all the time so I have to make sure to keep my fingers spread, but its still pretty awesome.

I gor an error when I tried to type in the adb sideload update.zip "Pre Kit-Kat sideload connection failed" I have dev mode enabled and I'm on update 11 so I'm not sure what I did wrong

(oh my gosh! It worked! thanks so much! I typed this comment entyerly with my virtual hand!) :D I went ahead and updated it manually cause I couldn't wait! VR is going to go so far! The tracking though is not perfect. I have the headset's tracking set to 60Hz, and my virtual hands are a bit wobbly. Even when my real hands are sitting still. Hopefully it'll be fixed when the update officially rolls out.

Thank you, that update file works a treat :) the instructions underneath need updating though it says "cd OculusUpdate" when it should say "cd QuestUpdate"

Hello, thank you for this useful content. I have a question for you. I factory reset my VR Quest device and started the standard setup process. I paired the phone and the device and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The update started, but was not finished after hours. I contacted Oculus support and tried something with their advice, but it didn't work. As a result, they said they could make a change. Is it possible to setup the device with this method?

It's worth it for the guardian fix, the visual IPD display is nice and there's a sweet new text messaging feature. It's a good update.

hi your probably super busy anyway i turned mu quest onto and it just went to that update screen but it was on like 2 per cent so cut off so i powered it up now it's just going into a loop updates starts then goes to a black screen ..have done a factory reset it was on v16 ..so i thought i would give this a go and load up v17 but no luck just does the same thing ..can you think of anything else ii can try ...think its a goner

So I guess if you need to have the update.zip or update11.zip for when you type in the command prompt, adb sideload update.zip then you don't want to unzip the update files? As far as I know a zip file is an unzipped file. I know that seems obvious, but I am double checking. It seems to do the version 11 update I can copy the adb files from the version 12 update and then leave the update11.zip in the Questupdate11 folder and follow the instructions doing the command prompt part and it should work, right?

Generally you'd need to plug it into your PC then copy to PC and then to phone. I have OneDrive sideloaded and have it set to automatically backup pics and vids so they just show up in my OneDrive apps without doing anything, super convenient!

Thanks, Ty! I've updated my Quest using your method. Hand tracking works, I've had to restart my quest one time for it to show up. I wonder where you've found the update file though. My guess is via some developer portal? :) Also, I do not see a setting for virtual environments, guess it's not enabled for my account yet? Also no TV but it is probably region locked :(

Gald it worked! Yeah, oculus TV is regoin specific (sucks). The update was captured from another user's web traffic as they received the update (captured the url the download came from).

Just curious, I have to manually update my Quest to version 11 first, but those files don't have any ADB files. Do I still type in the command prompt, adb sideload update or do I type in something else. I don't want to mess my Quest up.

Honestly, I don't think my Quest has ever uploaded an update since the first time it does it when you register the Quest. Then again I don't think I have had my Quest in sleep mode ever. Never really knew how to do that.

Move the update11 zip file into the adb folder and follow the instructions and just change update.zip to update11.zip in the adb command. ;-)

@@tycotech Sorry I don't understand. Where is the adb folder and are you saying to move the update11 zip into the adb folder before I extract it. In the version 12 update it has adb files in it, so that should be fine, but the version 11 is missing those files. I am so confused.

How does it automatically download without using a PC? I have a notification on my Oculus app that a software update is available and to put on my headset but nothing happens. Do I need to click somewhere to initiate it?

The link was captured in the network traffic of another user who received the download, I then downloaded it that way ;-)

I assume this firmware update is language independent? Don't want to end up with a different localized system suddenly without the option to switch back or so... (Can't remember where, to which or even if I can change the language in the first place) :D

I apparently updated to version 10, not 11, at least that's what it shows after doing the Quest update 11, which is odd, now I was putting in version 12 and in my headset it says downloading. I assume it will be getting version 12 or what? In the command prompt it opened the zip file to 100 % and says total xfer 1.00x. It was downloading the software update that it found, I hope this is right.

Can't update to 11 - Hi TycoTech, your inst state "install just like..above", but the 11update folder doesn't have the adb.exe command nor the file named install. Do I copy the adb.exe files and ref payload.bin? Actually, I get error pre-KitKat sideload connection failed. Sorry to be so oblivious and I appreciate any reply. My quest is (stuck) on ver9 and in Settings>About>Software Update just spins endlessly "checking for updates". I have Beat Saber modded and countless apks installed through SideQuest. Thank again for any reply.

Move the update 11 zip into the adb folder (don't extract it) and do it just like the update 12 (but change the file name in the adb command to match)

@@tycotech Thx for replying (new Subscriber!!).. So I copied all files from 11 into 12 folder, but the filenames are very different- cmd line altered to "adb sideload payload.bin" = Total xfer: 0.00x ... then the Quest light changes from flashing purple to solid white indicating the system is powering on. I've been avoiding this, but I'll prob have to Factory Reset (after backing up apk installs via SideQuest). You are THE man for all your followup replies here! Thx TycoTech =J

Don't copy all the files from 11, just keep it as a zip file and put the zip in the adb folder. Try that.

Uninstall beat Saber using sidequest. Check this vid out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gK1zmZNizL6Ynok.html for the hand tracking try restarting the Quest, might have to do it twice.

when i do it it says downloading 100% then totalxfer: 1.00x, then my quest restarts and just goes to setting up the boundaries, it doesnt show it updating

That means the zip you were trying to pass as an update wan't valid. Try re downloading.

Just give it a few minutes, and maybe try a restart.
