Or, and hear me out... Delay the unification by just a tad and declare a few show of strengths. It ends up being way better for you in the long run. If you were "minmaxing" you would know that.

@@manaintolerantmage Ofc you show strenth, the formable was just the least effort, hence why it stood out to me. Most people don't like delaying their conquest for some mana points.

@@JohnPGarrett It's not just "some mana points" it helps you stabilize the country earlier. It's not all about speedrunning the tag, it's about having the country able to actually defend itself afterwards. I know some are about "painting the map" but in the specific case of Japan, it's actually better, more efficient, and more minmaxey to hold off on clicking that button.

In a place crowded with so many opms, the show strenght is indeed your best ally. Just 2 of them could help you speed run the unification of Japan even better. If you manage to get tech 4 mil before anyone...that's a cakewalk from there.

Many will be on tech 3 when you get five so even if (like in my shimazu game) the emperor declares on you early you can defeat them all by just stackwiping mercilessly. I had something like 10k troops when emperor declares for annexation and I manage to wipe all the daimyo and then win outnumbered 6:1 in the start of the war.

You kill everyone before a coalition can fire. It’s really not difficult and should be what is happening. By the time a coalition could form and fire the only people left should all be rivals and hate each other too much to work together. But if it does happen, that just helps you out even more. I have played every single Daimyo, including the ones not existing at 1444. I have never not conquered fast enough for a coalition to matter.

Similar to irl in the Sengoku Jidai when all the daimyo fought and didn’t work together

Playing tall means to get as much from your land/modifiers as possible, usually meaning you stay small but extremely strong per their size. They are typically focused on modifiers and development, the Merchant republics(Venice) and Prussia are typical example of "tall" nations(Merchant republics can have strong control of trade nodes just by steering, and Prussia can maintain their strong modifiers when they have less land). Main point is that they can be impactful even without controlling a lot of land. Wide is the opposite, conquer simple as, you get power from the land you conquer, even if theyre not the most efficient provinces or inefficient modifiers wise. Russia is our major example of wide, their lands are shit, but they get a lot of said shit land, so those 3 dev provinces still add up. Its usually up to preference in singleplayer(since AIs are pushovers), but in multiplayer or edge cases where you are limited expansion wise, playing tall is usually the most optimal(or only) play. Usually if you have neighbours you can conquer easily, its just easier to conquer more land than playing tall, and wide nations can typically beat a smaller tall nation, but a wide nation usually cant beat multiple tall nations that combined have the same size as the wide nation. Prime example : Get a coalition forming from half of the Holy Roman Empire(HRE). You will find it to be a lot harder than beating France alone, even if the coalition is roughly the same as France size wise. Reason : France might have 40k troops, but imagine each of the 20 one province minors of the HRE each have 4k(since they each have a base income and force limit). Thats still twice the amount of France. Not counting Austria who also typically hop in(who is also tall, since despite being way smaller than france, have the same amount of army as them because they get more force limit and income from being holy roman emperor).

i'm honestly both suprised and completly non-suprised that laith has never tried ashikaga. i can definetly understand why starting as the overlord is just not his kind of game but at the same time it's still a lot of fun to consolidate japan diplomaticly if you ask me.

Date's ideas are neat if you like saving mana points. CCR, dev cost, idea cost, and tech cost. One of the worst starts, though.

It's the reverse HRE, a tiny place where everyone is attacking everyone instead of a huge place where you poke your neighbor and everyone decides to kill you.

Portugal should be the easiest to do that.

@@lyonard9226 yes and no, because Portugal gives colonizing bonuses which would be wasted on you, because the point of this challenge is to not even colonize yourself, so you rapidly need to conquer all coastlines in Western Europe so no one can send a colonist. To make it more doable the challenge could allow burning settlements so if you're running out of time you can attack and destroy new colonies. The interesting part of this challenge is the fact that colonialism won't be spawning in Europe and it'd be spawning much later in the game, which changes the dynamics in the whole World.
