This advice was for a parent that doesn’t have anything else to do in a day than run rings around the ODD child.

I’m a couple minutes into the video and thats the sense that I got. I have 4 boys. 9,5,2 and an infant. My 9 year old is very defiant and he needs to do what he is told for very practical reasons. I can’t negotiate with him. He will negotiate me to death. I’m starting to give him commands and instructions and ending it with a period.

I like the premise but the lack of examples and how to apply to a situation was frustrating at best.

These people are not parents of an ODD child. The reason I came here was to find out how to deal, not to know what it is. I already know that.

For all the parents of children diagnosed with ODD who just watched this useless video: I am sorry for your frustration and anguish. I’m right there with you. Most people have no idea how to work with a child who is constantly, not just occasionally, but constantly defiant. That’s why you’ll only hear lectures on what causes or contributes to Oppositional Defiance Disorder, but never get actual advice on how to handle it. Also, there is a huge difference between a child with ADHD and a child with ODD. When we adopted our son at 3, we understood he’d have to deal with PTSD, and that he had ADHD traits, and we got lots of resources for it. When you ask anyone about ODD you get advice that is usually useless. Our son is about to turn 18. For the past 15 years we’ve been to therapist after therapist. I developed a drinking problem from all the stress and had to quit. We still have to deal with 30 minute tirades on why he shouldn’t have to clean his room. We love him, but we’ve made it very clear if he continues this behavior he’s on his own. That’s painful, but that’s what it’s *really* like to parent a child with ODD.

Thank you for your honesty and I’m so sorry your family is dealing with this. Our 5 yr old son has ADHD hyperactive and sometimes does mean things to get a reaction out of us or refuses to get dressed even tho we know he can. I don’t know if that’s all ADHD but the screaming/yelling/lack of trying that comes with it all is very stressful. This journey is not fun. Thank you for being vulnerable to share. I don’t think many of this kind of parenting style- “getting to the root of the problem” can truly apply to kids who are neurodivergent since their brain simply cannot process things the same way as a typical child.

I feel this, very deeply. I feel like our entire life has been flipped on its head. Therapist after therapist, all saying they aren't successful in "getting through" to my son or "we've reached a dead end" so to speak. Constant behavior interventions and calls from school, suspensions, etc. No one talks about how isolating having a child with ADHD/ODD really is. No one wants to be around such dysregulation. And who can blame them? I feel like we are always in a sinking ship. Thank you for sharing a bit of your story. It makes people like me feel less stranded.

I agree this was very disappointing. I feel ODD is a much bigger issue than this Dr. Is addressing. I must say though l wouldn’t focus on his room. Let him live in his own mess. Let natural consequences be his punishment ie lack of clean clothes, cannot find things etc

What are your thoughts to people who homeschool children, yet they do t have the training or education to work with OOD/ ADHD children.

My son is 4 almost 5 in April. He hasn't been officially diagnosed with ADHD but his pediatrician and I are very sure that he does have it. He's in preschool and he has been having some issues, like his language, hitting his friends, pushing them, spitting on them. I don't want to put him on medication yet, I rather do something natural. Is there anything that I could give him for his ADHD? And from listening to the webinar it sounds like he also has ODD as well.

OMG I am so frustrated listening to this. He totally missed the core of all the questions. All those things are great things to do but he is acting like like the parent won’t be in a serious situation after “talking” to the child. I’m pretty sure every question presented one single issue…HOW DO YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD WHEN THE CHILD LASHES OUT?!?!? Ugh I don’t think any parent would be watching this if they were not already committed to “collaborating” with their child. Bottom line is parents love their kids and want to understand how to “not unalive the child” during the process of helping them! (Not literally but I know parents in this situation get what I mean)
