Odd Haugen and the World Record Thomas Inch Dumbbell Lift

It might not look very heavy, but the Thomas Inch dumbbell is one of the hardest implements to lift with one hand, for a couple reasons - one, the handle is about the same circumference as a coke can. Try getting a good grip on that thing. And two, it weighs 172 lbs. Add the two together and you get an implement that time and time again humbles otherwise strong men. But lifting the Thomas Inch dumbbell is something that Odd Haugen is particularly well-suited for, having one of the best grips of all time. In this Rogue Record Breaker event, Haugen attempts to lift the dumbbell a record 66 times - one lift for every year of his life - in 10 minutes.

It’s how thick the handle is that makes it hard...
@jedinxf7
@jedinxf7 2 жыл бұрын
yeah the weight is kinda trivial, if you were holding a barbell with that weight on it in one hand it'd be easy if you're moderately strong. the problem is it's impossible to hold onto for anyone with a merely strong grip. you need an impossibly strong grip for a handle that thick. I tried it once, wasn't even a threat of getting it. deadlifting double that weight is barely a warmup to me.
@Foxtrot6624

The weights not the impressive part, it's the shape of the dumbbell. It's designed so that you can't close your hand around it so it's borderline impossible to pick up without it slipping

Rogue Fitness, you guys have really brought strongman to a whole new level. This sport will grow bigger and get more people involved thanks to what you do. The videos you have done these past couple years are fantastic. You have done more for this sport in the last few years than WSM and ESPN have done all together. It would be great if you could do a major strongman documentary along the lines of "Fittest on Earth"! Keep up the great work!!! I am Rogue!!!

I have had these for several weeks kzfaq.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 and I have been really happy with them so far. I love being able to do a variety of workouts at home when I don't have time to make it to the gym. When paired with a basic bench, there are tons of different exercises and you can hit pretty much all major muscle groups. It is easy to adjust to your desired weight with the dials on each side. They slide in and out of the cradle smoothly. The only downside to this design vs the newer version, is that these are pretty wide. This does limit your range of motion with certain hand positions on certain exercises. Straight dumbbell press would be an example of this. I have to turn my hands slightly in order to bring them close enough together. Not a huge deal to me though. Really happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend.

You can maintain a lot of muscle mass and strength well into your seventies just by regularly lifting and eating. My grandpa’s 77 and in excellent shape and he lifts 6 days a week! Besides, retirement gives you plenty of time to focus on what’s important.

People in the comments don't understand how difficult this is. Thor couldn't lift it once. No one else can do this. Brian Shaw is the next best I'm pretty sure and he might get half of what Odd got. It's incredibly more difficult that you think since it's a solid piece that rolls out of your fingers.

This guy is awesome, it really sucks that people have to get old. If he had all the time in the world to train he could smash that record with all of his talent. I'm sure some of the top strongmen could beat this record, but I really hope they don't. It would just be disrespectful to move the record that much further from where he got. Hopefully he tries again next year and sets a new record.

He was as legit as they come and one of the strongest men that has ever lived. We never saw his full potential in strongman because of wwe which is sad. He accomplished this feat whilst working a full wwe schedule and being unable to train like a full time strongman.

Grip strength takes very long time to develop because you can't do exhaustive training without quickly running into all sorts of chronic conditions. You also need your hands for so many things that doing them in 3times per week would compromise your other training and life in general. No wonder the guy with the epic grip has been training routinely for 5 decades.
