Well, I kinda killed the Archive’s old LaserKaraoke machine…and I’d been threatening to upgrade the main Laserdisc player. Upgrade time!

Nice score! I don't have a laserdisc player, because, there's no room for it. All I have is a VCR and DVD player, along with my Sony SQ Decoder SQD-1000 which is a quadraphonic system where it decodes 4 channels in SQ mode. It works with SQ encoded records from the 1970's since I have an SQ album, but works great with movies on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital. This CLD-D605 can also play MCA DiscoVision laserdiscs from the late 70's, because of its compatibility of using older laserdiscs from the 1980's.

Interesting fact about DTS Laserdisc tracks: It actually has a higher bitrate compared to DTS on DVD (Laserdisc DTS tracks had a bitrate of 1.24 Mbps, while DVD DTS tracks had a bitrate of 768 Kbps).

MysteryMii215 DTS DVD's works with my Sony SQ decoder SQD-1000. I tried it and it still works like a champ. All DVD's has DTS encoding audio as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding audio works with my SQ Decoder, because of its compatibility.

It even outperforms the DTS system for movie theaters! Those were compressed onto two CD-ROMS per movie and synched with the film. PITA format to work with, Dolby Digital did the same thing and was printed right on the film.

My personal LaserDisc player, a Pioneer CLD-D606, is basically the same player, but without the LaserKaraoke capabilities, so from my personal experience with it, it's a nice player for the price and it should work well for you. BTW: My D606 also has a detachable power chord. It also had issues when I use the CLV freeze frames or other trick play functions when I'm using composite. S-Video works perfectly fine.

Did you ever consider signing damaged/unusable equipment or media and either selling it or auctioning it off, either for charity or to fund the show? I'm sure some Archive fans would be interested in owning a piece of the show.

I recently picked up a Pioneer CLD-V2400, which has a serial port on the back... the main reason I got it -- I already have a CLD-S201 that I've had since my college days in the 90s... Anyway you can do neat stuff with the V2400, like disabling the "video squelch" -- the blue screen that pops on during disk seking or pause in extended play disks, etc. You can also get input from the remote, seek to specific frames, change squelch color, disable/enable video/audio in general, and set some on-screen text. Lots of fun stuff to mess around with. Mine came with a remote, which was filthy. I managed to completely disassemble the remote nondestructively, using some old credit cards as spudgers, cleaned all of the plastics with simple green, rubber contacts and pcb with isopropyl, and it works, and more importantly feels, as good as new. :D

My player is an industrial unit. A Pioneer CLD-V2600. Good player, but I wish it had both-side play.

I have a DVL-919 picked up from some old folks for $40 with about 20 Laserdiscs, works perfectly, every now and then it skips on side B but nothing a little greasing of the rail won't fix.

Forget the LaserActive or Muse Hi-Vision, why didn't you get an RDI Halcyon? (And someone has an actual unit posted on FleBay at the low, low cost of $22,500! Yikes!)

I have a Pioneer CD CDV LD Player Model CLD-S104. I found it in a pawn store two years ago for $19 and it works. They thought it was a multi-disc changer. A widescreen gatefold edition of Jurassic Park was next to it for a dollar and they thought it was a record. Lol.

The CLD-V820 is, and has been for several years, my primary watching/archiving Machine. It has the best picture quality from the composite out of any player I own (I own 7, lol), which is good, as the comb filters in all but the Elite units are trash... (You could get an external comb filter (Like a Panasonic DMR-E50) rather than use the inferior one in the player, LD is composite on the disc) It also will play any disc I throw at it, including playing the whole bumper on most (5 of my 7) discovision discs... It's too bad it is gone, It might have been worth fixing despite the cost, though the D605 is a beast of a unit, as well.

There were a some CD-Video gold discs released in the USA, most were just discs with some music videos and a few regular CD audio tracks on them. I saw them for sale at one of my local high end A/V stores (which is literally the only store I could find Laserdiscs at all in my entire region, none of the other A/V specialty shops sold them, players yes discs no.)

DTS and AC3 signals will both go out on the same TOSLink or Digital Coax signal path, you don't need a separate output for each. You choose which one is _going_ to be sent out within the player's software. Often its as simple as if the disk has both than DTS takes priority. You usually also have a third layer of choice on the disk itself where you can explicitly choose a DTS or DD soundtrack within its 'Languages' menu--although the exact placement can vary depending on who mastered the disk. It is also pretty odd your AV amplifier doesn't have its own decoder for these standard built in... Maybe it was *super* old.

Sorta obvious, but wanted to add you can just plug in one of those adaptor plugs for using the smaller plugs in the larger jacks, and it'll enable the karaoke functions- I keep one plugged into mine just so I can play with the pitch control. On Chipmunks CDs, you can get Ross Bagdasarian's real voice back!

Do you have any DTS CDs? The on-screen display usually jitters on my setup too, especially when flipping sides, but regular playback is fine. A somewhat hidden feature in the later players is the ability to override the automatic stops on CAV discs- just hold down the Play button until "PSC ON" appears onscreen. That way you can play Video Essentials all the way through with no pauses, plus you can play the DiscoVision of "Frenzy" which had one side mastered with picture stops on every frame! For more fun get the service remote, and you can play General Motors and Laseractive discs on it.

CDVs were somewhat bigger in the US than you give them credit for. The NTSC titles for the US market were pressed either in Japan (which are all still fine) or PDO UK (like your randy Newman disc... surprised it still plays as well as it does. Most PDOs have rotted beyond playability in my experience, even the CD audio tracks)
