On the western bank of the Salton Sea sit the remains of a vast naval base that, at one time, had a very unusual purpose.

The B.R.A.C commission is the way that the military closes bases, however some of those bases go on to other uses. The example I think of is Fort McClellan near Aniston Alabama. The old “Tank range” is now home to the loblolly pine tree forest which the National Park Service runs. The old Head quarter section is now a senior care home. And the former property has other uses as well. “That’s your new odd fact of the day” I’m glad to see this channel is back.

I grew up at the Salton Sea. My grandparents lived on finger #5. Our folks would dump us for 2 weeks every summer. From like 1985-1989. I think last time I went to see them there was in 1992 when my brother got his license. We drove by ourselves from Vegas to visit them for 2 weeks. The water always had alot of dead fish floating in it. We swam and skied in the Salton Sea. We fished and ate the fish. The Salton Sea is a very important migratory spot for many different species of bird, even though the salt level is rising. It was an adventurous place for us growing up. And yes, the smell is unique for sure.

It’s very interesting how the sand is slowly overtaking some of those ruins - especially the bunkers! That whole area was shook pretty strongly on Easter Sunday back in 2010 when that 7.2 earthquake hit just south of the US/Mexico border. I’m surprised that concrete building didn’t show more quake damage than it appeared to have. Never heard of this place until I saw your video. Cool video!

Hey, one place we used to go to as kids in the '70s&'80s was "Satan's Castle", the ruins in San Bernardino Mountains. Cool ruins of a castle on the mountain. It was a spooky place with a great view! Hella cool place you two ought to examine. I'd love to see it through your lens.

When the Navy abandoned the base, they left behind quite a lot of equipment and materiel in warehoues. I had a pal who lived nearby and he loaded up on things especially vehicle spare parts. I have been to the base several times in the 1990's when Navy buidlings still stood. . The ammo bunkers were free of sand and empty then The pier was usually under water; the power building was half flooded. There was a large, 2 story AEC building north of the base. That was blown up when abandoned. At least one of the dummy A-bombs was recovered and it sits on land SW of the Lake. Another purpose of dropping them there was to determine what happened if the bomb had to be jettisoned over the Pacific Ocean. (My father was a Manhattan Project scientist at Los Alamos, NM.) I'm pleased you mentioned the movie "Wake Island". An airfield strip was made on the base just for the movie and was used afterward by the Navy/AEC. Another movie, "Sahara" (1943 with Humphrey Bogart), was filmed in the badlands west of the base. The studio had to take dune sand from the base to put it in movie scenes. I found and explored the site in 1996.

Hello Bethany and Drew, sure missed your two. Happy to see you back. Every time I see videos on the saltan sea brings back vague memories when I was about 4 going to a resort there back in it's hay-day. That would have been about 1967. My grandparents and great grandparents both owned together a house in an up and coming city called Palm Srings at that time. I am pretty sure it was the salton sea that we went too back then. I just remember a lot of sand.
