Loved the Canals. I was there frequently in the early sixties, my Great grandparents built their house in 1925 and lived there for nearly forty years. The house is still there, 457 Sherman Canal. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for answering the 101 questions I've had about Venice of America. Prior to this, all I've seen are brief video clips and images with little information. Years ago, I visited some friends on Abbott Kinney Boulevard. Now I understand the name!

I've been to these canals a few times over the last 20 years, but it was great to get the historical context. It's nice to walk along the canals around Christmastime as many of the houses are nicely decorated with lights.

it is great to see the upgrades to the canals. The last time i was there they were just a series of puddles of stagnant water breeding mosquitos. I remember seeing on TCM one or two silent movies filmed there. Great video! Thank you for sharing!

On the occasions I've been in LA over the years I've made a point of visiting Venice, walking the canal paths and thinking what a lovely place it would be to live. If ever a city needed more areas like the canals of Venice then it's LA. Orson Welles' great film 'Touch of Evil' was shot largely there and being made in 1958 the then dilapidated state of the canals is evident.

They also have the Naples Canals in Long Beach. Prettier and nicer than the ones in Venice. At Christmas, boats are decorated and cruise the canals.

Hi Drew and Bethany, I’m new to your channel - and I love it. Checking out ‘odd’ places has been a passion of mine for some time (I’m a history teacher) and travel is what my wife and I just ‘do’… so your content is great, thank you. I can’t believe the fantastic things we have missed when on the US west coast. Well done guys - interesting, entertaining and easy… thanks again. Bruce in Australia.

Cool Video! Waterways give off a certain kind of tranquility. I had to go to San Antonio TX for business once and decided that my employees and I deserved a little break. Being a History guy, I figured that we should visit the Alamo. I guess from old movies and such, I was thinking it was out in the country. Well, it might have been but nowadays it is in the middle of San Antonio! It is Cool to visit such an old historic place and walk out into a city. The atmosphere is great. They have a Riverwalk along a man-made section of 'river' that I think was built as a water resource for downtown. Walk about a block and there's a Mall with good food and drinks (and shopping, if that's what you're into). I think more cities should have waterways. They beautify the area and seem to offer a peaceful setting in the middle of the chaos of a big city. Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

It looks like the canals are at sea level and connected to the sea through a channel. I assume the water is sea water, salty? Does the water level rise and fall with the tides, or do they have valves that they open only at high tide to let new water in?
@OddityOdysseys
@OddityOdysseys 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. There are valves that connect the canals to the marina. I believe once a week they're opened up to let the tide in and flush out the old water.

North of Toronto on Lake Simcoe there is a retirement community designed along much the same lines called "Lagoon City", Lake Simcoe also connects to the Trent/Severn Canal system which wends its way through the Southern Ontario countryside down to Lake Ontario. I think the comment about doing all the paddling deserved a whack in the back of the head with a paddle, or at least a splash of water.
