I bought this Nintendo Wii as part of a bigger lot 10 Wii's for $50 to restore and repair them. It's however not working. It turns on but nothing shows up on the screen and the disc drive makes a horrible noise.
First I disassembled the console. I found the Wii had taken some sort of a hit and the leg of the disc drive had broken. I also found the WiFi module had become loose and was causing the issue with no signal. Wii need both WiFi and Bluetooth module connected to start properly. After connecting the module I was able to test the console properly. The port for the sensor bar had some dirt that blocked good connection causing the sensor bar not to work. I cleaned the port to fix that. To fix the noise of the disc drive I had to bent some of the metal parts on the drive. When the console gets old the parts tend to bend due to use and they start to get make such noises due to vibrations from the disc spinning.
Some of the plastic parts of the console were a bit yellowed. I removed the yellowing with a method called retrobrighting. Here's my tutorial for that: • How to remove yellowin...

@@maximilianbrem8250 to be fair, modern home consoles are also durable - my Xbox Series S literally feels like a brick and I am not sure what I would have to do for it to break. But even if it's a bit dusty I don't get how people still can make them super grimy in just like 2 years. That's considering that I have spilled tea over my controller and after some cleaning it works like new. I would be more careful with things like Steamdeck and Switch but from my experience they are also not that easy to break unless you're really unlucky or trying to do so on purpose.

@@Lag1914 you should try modding the wii so you can run games off of a usb drive instead of the disks. You can’t dump games to the usb drive without the wii disk drive working though so you’ll have to obtain the disk images from semi-reputable sources. The moment you touched the plate on the drive and that awful noise stopped was a priceless relief from that awful sound. I remember buying my Wii on launch day. It was the only system I ever bought at launch and it was a bit of a fluke. A few months before I was trading in some games and they had one pre-order left as somebody in front of me just cancelled. My Army buddy encouraged me to get the pre-order. I went with him to pick it up on launch day in November 2006. We were in those long, long line at the Fayetteville, NC mall and a dude with a clip board stepped out and called 5-6 names including mine. People were furious at us for some reason and one or two kids were weeping. I took that Wii with me to Iraq when I deployed. I didn't have much downtime, but Super Mario Galaxy and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn kept me company.

For plastic repair, also try out TAMIYA 87038 Extra Thin Cement Glue Fine Tip. I am a miniature builder. That adhesion method is a plastic weld, and leaves virtually no seam. it also makes a very strong bond. You apply differently. You hold the part in place and use the glue along the seam; it is so thin it fills the gap. It chemically melts the plastics on both edges slightly, so when it dries they are bounded as a plastic, not two pieces held with the glue. Once dried, you can use it a second time over the exterior of the crack, and it by in large melts away. Great work on the videos, and I love your stuff. Top notch, just I think you would like Tamiya better, because it works amazingly. Have a great day!

I worked retail when this was launched, was able to get one on its first holiday season when a customer returned an unopened box wii just because they needed the money back for other presents. I love this system, i was the life of the party for a bit when no one else could find a wii lol. Great library of games as well as a great system for hacks and emulation. Cheers @Odd Tinkering, happy new year and thanks for all your content!!!

I remember disassembling a Wii back then when clear cases came out. I had never seen such a needlessly complex system before in my life. Was used to n64’s, dreamcasts etc. I was half way through and realized I should have paid more attention to where which screws came from. Didn’t expect so many! Hated putting it back together.

I was looking for a video like this...exactly 10 years ago. 2013. The year my Wii started falling apart. I still have it to this day. I haven't touched it. It's still barely functional. This year, I just might try my hand at refurbishing it. Maybe I can get it to play Project M again. Your Wii is in surprisingly good condition. Mine works, but it crashes often. Might be in worse condition than yours, given the dust collected over the decade. Ehh, but it'll still be fun to open it up. And as always, watching you open things is relaxing and interesting. **God, I love the candle trick. I learned that one by complete accident on my own.

7:29 If you are confused as to how it works, its because the “sensor bar” is not a sensor bar, it’s just a bar with infrared LEDs at the ends. The sensor is in the Wii remote, in the form of an infrared-sensitive camera. And of course, the candles emit a lot of infrared light.

Amazing and beautiful restoration, it's amazing how far a bit of cleaning and TLC can take an old, tired console like this. It's almost like new again! I will say though, it does still look like you have a worn out capacitor or two judging by the dimness on startup. Saw someone fix a Wii with a similar issue where that ended up being the cause. Just thought I should mention :)

Love the video man I can't believe how well you refurbished that wii so good job on that. Although I noticed the noise filtering capacitors that are responsible for the video output are starting to go bad so you might want to replace them soon but not for a while since they still have some functionality left.
