Neat stuff for the times you feel creatively blocked or if you're not too much into music theory! Also, for the chords as numbers, I can make it a bit more clear for you. These numbers, called degrees can be notes or entire chords. Let's pick the key of C Major. Within the scale, the numbers represent the relation between the notes and the root note. So: I = C = Root note II = D = Second III = E = Third IV = F = Fourth V = G = FIfth VI = A = Sixth VII = B = Seventh Nothing too complicated here right? Well, in the context of chords, the I is a simple triad chord based on the C. A triad chord is made of the I, III and V within the scale. Which gives us C, E and G. This is a major chord (there’s 4 semitones between the root note of the chord C, and the third: E) Now, let’s have a look at the II chord in the key of C major. We have to take the II of the scale, D. Then we add the third note from D within the key of C major. So we count D, e, F. That’ the one. Then we add the fifth. So : d, e, f, g, A. That leaves us with D, F, A. That’s a minor chord. Because there’s only 3 semitones between the D and the F. So you see, it’s all a matter of picking notes that fit the key you’re writing in. There’s no such thing as a chord gonna get major or minor because the number is bigger. It’s just depending on the key you pick and the relationship within the root note of the chord and its third.

You took the time to write all of this with an incorrect premise. The roman numerals do NOT represent notes, they represent the chord progressions based off the fundamental Major and minor chords. I, III, and V don't mean D, E, and G...IF you had a chord progression like that, first of all, it would sound like crap because a V chord doesn't follow a M3 chord but it would mean chord progressions from I to III to V, not notes. I don't know where you learned that but no where in music theory does that even make sense. A standard chord progression would be something like a I IV V. Smh.

Great tutorial. When I started watching I thought this seems familiar. And then realised after checking my software that I'd bought Odesi a year ago and had barely used it. But as usual your video has inspired me to revisit it. I hope they sort that division issue you mention at 5.40. The VST version sounds great. Keep us up to date on how the Beta testing goes. Btw will you ever do an French house tutorial using the Justice bass sound you made. Love that stuff. Anyway, thanks again for keeping us inspired.

If you struggle with chords that compliment bass lines, why don't you just come up with the chord progression first and then add the bass line in later? Edit: I know nothing about music theory and I can come up with chords easily. I just play by ear.

Honestly, just study one of those 10 minute toots on "chord progressions with the circle of fifths" because that's exactly what this software is based on. In fact, when you opened up and saw the roman numerals, those are the basic chord progressions to every hit song but the problem using that is that you're song will never be unique...meaning, it will always sound the same and you'll find soon that all your songs sound the same and dull. Just trust me, learn it and you can invent better chord progressions once you know the basic ones. The theory is actually a lot easier than you think.

TheChosenOne harmony and melody, well hasn't offered anything new since model jazz. Everything has been done. So you can study theory for 4 years everyday for one hour or just catalogue tracks you like and rip the chord successions you like. It isn't that I don't encourage learning, i don't think people really have the time so why not just borrow.

Just a tip.. that beginning chord progression actually did work with your base line, more than you thought. Sometime or often the rhythm section is playing rootless chords or inversions that doesn’t necessarily contain the same root not as the bass, because in these cases the rhythm relies on the bass to play the root

@BalthazarAtlanta

I almost wanted to reach out several times and fix some of those chord connections (connecting notes) for you! Almost there; just remember this tip: minimum movement between chord connections. If you have some notes "sticking out away" from the chord group, start there first. try an inversion, a 7th or 9th, or even deleting it. Think like a piano player. Finger movements and hand positions minimal. If you build around a tight pad, you can go octave crazy with alt percussion, bass, lead lines, etc. Hope that helps.

I think this is interesting. However there are similar plug ins that work within the DAW. Or maybe instead of avoiding the more difficult learning curve of gaining a basic knowledge of chords and progressions, you take the time spent learning this software and learn the real deal. Just an opinion. Thanks Slynk. Still nice to check new softwarrrreees out.

They use Roman Numerals since you have both UPPERCASE and lowercase numerals in the Roman Numeral system. UPPERCASE are used for MAJOR CHORDS, and lower case signify minor chords... The 7 chords they use are called the Diatonic Chords, which simply means the chords are formed using ONLY notes from the relevant scale. Every major and minor scale has 7 different diatonic 3 note chords; one starting on each note of the scale, but again, forming chords that use ONLY the notes of that scale. So in C Major (all the white keys, for simplicity) the 7 chords would be C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor and B diminished (which B diminished is frequently avoided as it's challenging to fit into a song, but some clever songs have made it work). Why? Because making 3 note chords (called triads) that STRICTLY USE THE WHITE KEYS, will make this specific list of chords out of the C scale. By using the Roman Numerals, they are breaking free the diatonic chords from which particular scale -- or key -- they are being played in. So using my example C major scale above, a I and then IV chord would be C major, followed by F major. However using the Roman Numerals illustrates how chords sound in a series, and by removing the particular key through their use (as opposed to specifying a C major and then F major), they do this illustration of one chords' "sound relationship" to another chord for ALL KEYS (that is, all major keys, or all minor keys whichever you're working in). Because despite each Key having a different sett of pitches, essentially a I chord, moving to a IV chord, as just one example, sounds the same in all keys... The idea is that once you hear something like the most powerful used progression music; the II, V, I progression enough times, your ear can begin to hear the relationship between these chords and it will click for you that the key they are played in is less important then. So taking any song you like and writing it out as Roman Numerals for all the chords would make it easier for someone to play in any key; they just need to know the diatonic chords for that key, and of course there are only 7 (6 if you toss out the diminished chord). It also frees you from thinking within the limits of a single key when you come to find chord progressions that YOU LIKE, so that, for example, you like the sound of the vi chord, moving to the II chord so that you can leverage that knowledge in any key you start working in in the future, instead of being "locked in" and saying, gee, I like the sound of Am moving to Dm because thinking of it in that way won't help you much to use that knowledge in a different key.

@naught101
@naught101 7 жыл бұрын
It's pretty hard to make an E Major sound good in an E minor key... it's because it has notes in it that are not in the key (G# is out of key). Minor keys contain chords in the order listed at the top (i, ii dim, III, iv, v, VI, VII / minor, diminished minor, major, minor, minor, major, major), because those chords have their root notes as the notes in the minor scale, and only contain notes in the key (e.g. all of the notes in III - Gmajor - G, B, D - are in the key of E minor). The Nashville notation makes sense when you realise that the chords transpose to other keys, but the note names don't. Music theory is a lot to learn if you want to write straight out of your head (heaps to remember), but it's not hard to learn enough to understand why some things sound shit. Also, if you find a cool chord/sequence on a keyboard, use a chord search website to look it up, and find out why it sounds cool!

tbh, this app is a better tool for learning theory by reverse engineering. One is going to be curious about why one progression works better in some modes than others. You get the equivalent of a blank canvas and an infinite selection of sonic paints. So what if an outline is used as a basis?
@BeauSun572

I understand what you saying for sure. But its also easy to see your a student of theory. Bringing up "Modes"... Way beyond the ignorant "producer" who can barely understand the difference between major and minor scales, or the different 7th chords... Let alone Modes. Lol. At one point I knew zero about music theory... But a few things such as schooling and practice unlocked the world of music for me. So yea... LEARN INSTEAD OF USING PRODUCTS MADE FOR THE LAZY UNMOTIVATED "producer".....

The melodies and chords you can automatically generate with this software sound nice but there is a whole other level of music theory that you could learn to take your song to a new creative place. This software is surface level shit. If you want to get interesting, you've gotta learn some music theory the old fashioned way.
