The name Oei Tiong Ham has become a legend for the people in Semarang. The amount of his wealth is so large that he became the richest person in Southeast Asia in the Dutch East Indies government. The owner of Oei Tiong Ham Concern, not only has a sugar production and trading business, but also has many other business lines, including tapioca processing, rubber, shipping, property and so on. In fact, he also became the "King of Opium" because he managed to monopolize the opium trade at that time.
Oei Tiong Ham had eight wives, 26 children, and a dozen concubines. Since childhood, he likes to gamble to hone his business instincts. Towards the end of his life, Oei Tiong Ham's business empire was passed on to his two sons, who were considered to have business prowess. He died in Singapore in 1824, his body was buried in Semarang, his homeland.
