There was an actual study done using San Francisco as the target of a nuclear attack and how things would change depending on where exactly the blast was centered. In the first part of the study, they modeled the blast directly over downtown over all of the nice tall concrete skyscrapers, and while much of downtown was damaged, it largely survived, and more importantly the skyscrapers themselves helped to contain the fallout leading to much less collateral damage in the suburbs directly to the south leading to those largely surviving intact as well. The second part they modeled the blast happening over the suburbs, which completely wiped them out, but left downtown unharmed save for the few buildings at the leading edge of the blast which took damage, but still survived. So if you're in a suburb and an attack happens right over you, then yeah, the building you're in most likely ends up not being a building, but if you're in a concrete building, or the blast happens over a large collection of concrete buildings, then most likely the buildings remains intact. Whether or not you survive is a different story, but the buildings, the more they are concrete, and the more of them in a given area are concrete, the more they survive, which makes sense as hardened structures designed to withstand nuclear blasts are thick concrete structures.

It wouldn't have helped at all. Most of the deaths occurred after the blast. Nearly all buildings in Japan were made of wood with paper walls. It was the post blast firestorm which flattened most of these two cities. The blast radius was about 4km centered on the industrial/port areas.

Except the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was only 15 kilo tons. The most powerful bomb ever detonated which was a while ago had 10 MEGATONS. Nuclear weaponry nowadays are quote “3000x as powerful as the bomb dropped in Hiroshima”. You don’t survive regardless, it’s inevitable

When I was in the US Army, during basic training our drill sergeant gave us official instructions for a nuclear attack followed by "unofficial" advice. The second one was very simple- start moving to the closest cemetery.

depends on the building in the primary blast nothing will stand but after a few km concrete buildings and basement will be intact minus the windows. but yes if no basement bathtub and under the mattress are the best bets ... standing in the middle of the building is a pretty stupid suggestion ... trow the table down in the direction of the blast at the very least.. (unless its glass :P ) 500miles is basically like a tornado...

The specifics depend a great deal of the size and location of the blast, among other things. At Hiroshima and Nagasaki many people who were at least one or two miles from the center of the blast were able to survive.

About 50 years back, the civil defense had radio towers under ground, that would telescope 100 feet high. They also had fallout shelters supplied with now inedible emergency rations.

@@wildbikerbill6530 pressure will remain for about 2 hours in cities when power is out. take a shower , clean the tub and then plug it and fill it as much as you can. while it fills up shut all the windows up and seal them. once the tub is full use the kitchen sink pipe to make a vent with a filter if possible (coffee filter , old n95 mask etc..)

Reminds me of getting in trouble when teachers instructed me to hide under my desk in nuclear attack. I looked at @3’ to 10’ wall of exterior GLASS. After being sent to office. They changed to hallways. I looked over lockers. @3’ high glass over lockers entire wall. I mentioned that glass would break, fall on us. Back to Principals office. That my parents were trained, had been issued Geiger counters, pens to measure exposure. I had read that. Made me a threat to control. Principal basically said “don’t talk to other students, do what you want”. The bathrooms were inside, no glass, multiple walls. Also sports locker room. That was where I would go.

About that PSA… I have never seen a PSA set people up to die like that NYC PSA on nukes. Am I being a pessimist when I read those steps knowing that it’s all BS? Oh the big one just went off… huh let me look around for a big strong building that still has windows and doors with my retinas that didn’t fry when the flash occurred and let me get in that building that still has windows and doors bc the initial blast wave didn’t just blast me into the building and hell fire has zero chance of vaporizing me and once I am in the building let me find a random bag while I strip naked and take a shower bc the EMP didn’t affect the electricity that runs the pumps that deliver pressure for the shower to work and then let me check my phone and see if my city has sent me a text on when I can come out and get back to shopping bc again, communications won’t skip a beat bc the EMP has no effect on the electric grid bc a LGBTQ POC chic told me so. Are you fg kidding me… did anyone seriously look at this PSA and feel thankful the state of NY put this out? Other countries are handing out iodine tabs and pamphlets and our government doesn’t even paint a picture of the reality post boom boom.
