In this video I break down the use of Off camera flash photography in studio. The behind the scenes shows how I used multiple Godox AD600 Pro strobes for portraits of a musician.
I used multiple setups, including natural light from a window. Next I used a single large octabox for some dramatic one-light portraits. Then I added a strip box to change the look, and also used a V flat for fill and negative fill. Finally we switched to doing studio photography on a white background, which included the use of a beauty dish and large, 65" translucent umbrella.
Equipment used:

There's definitely little point to firing a speedlight through a 7 foot umbrella, because it's likely only going to about half of the surface area. You could get the same light quality with around a 43" shoot through umbrella, which would be the max I'd recommend. I think I can marry that concept into another video about reverse-mount speedlight softboxes!

Very well done; very useful. Gear reviews are easy to come by, but seeing how an experienced photographer brings about lighting effects is the only way for enthusiasts to understand what they should be trying.

Irs very simple for me, I just do the same technique that I used in camera. Take two images and look for contrast that is pure white for the cutout effect. So in my shot, the entire background is pure white. And in the tree shot, I edit it so the sky is pure white. Then I overlay the two shots. Then I select the subject (usually using select color range, which is a breeze with pure white background), delete the excess overlay from the subject, and repeat with a selection of the overlay to delete the subject. Then I just use opacity and black gradients on the opacity layer to get the effect that I want.

Hey Lorraine, if I'm removing something in Lightroom it's simply using the spot healing tool. But most of these I did removals in Photoshop when I retouched them.

It looks like C/G because he's adding in the G on the low E string. It gives a C chord a more full, bassy sound.

What happens when you clip shadows or highlights? Can you leave them clipped after editing them without having any consequences?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
The consequence of clipped shadows/highlights is there is 0 visible detail. So, it just means it's dead space in a photograph.

hello, I often see tutos of portraits, including pregnant women holding their belly with hands, in front of a window where the photographer can play with width with curtains opening,... I don't have such window or when i have, not enough light. I would be interested to know how we can simulate it. this tuto with 60" octa seems a good candidate, isn't it ? or should we prefer a godox FV150 constant light with a big softbox... If it gives you some ideas for BTS tutos :-)
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Despite the fact that most people refer to large softboxes as being similar to window light, I don't think it's the same at all. I think people oversimplify window light, as if you replace it's size it's going to look the same. But window light is inherently different because the light is bouncing around from so many different angles before it then gets "cut" (like barn doors) by the window frame. I'd probably opt for a large rectangle box instead, like this one by Pixapro www.essentialphoto.co.uk/product/120x180cm-47-point-2x70-point-8-rectangular-easy-open-umbrella-softbox-with-4cm-grid/ The rectangle shape would make more sense with using curtains as flags in front of it.
