We are excited to do some sawmilling on location at the cabin this fall to prepare our exterior siding for this spring! There are endless things to do and the wood stove is on my mind to finish, though I discovered a broken ear on the flu collar which is proprietary and also cast. So more to come on that fix. Also I acquired a DeWalt Cordless limbing saw that I would love to do a review video on as I clean up some tree bases at the mountain! Thank you, as always for checking out my channel!

Every time I view your videos, I am impressed with how warm and thoughtful you are in your narrations. You are right -- viewing this video provides much of the basics of home building skills. I really like the kitchen counter set-up and I also like your wife's decorating in the cabin! I want to build my own -- looking for land now, and praying for the right doors to open soon!

A tip for your ‘layout’ phase. Screw the bearers together (including triangular bracing) and lay it where you want the structure. Use markup paint to describe your footings. Move the bearer frame slightly off to expose each footing a dig them out. When you are ready to pour the concrete, sit the bearer frame back over the holes, using scrap 2x4s to hold it level with the stirrups into the holes ( I usually weld the stirrups onto a small rebar cage and coat liberally with cold-galv paint). Then just pour the concrete, use a jigsaw or other vibrating or oscillating tool onto the stirrup to vibrate the concrete as you go.

We built our house on four acres years ago we finally sold it . Where both a little older I’am 71 and my husband is 69 we purchased a lot in a small town. The adventure of building our retirement home is exciting. We drew up our plans a year ago after my husband had his cancer surgery so we decided it was time to take on the last building project a small two bedroom 1360 sq ft house with a large garage. My husband wants a shop to work on our motorcycles. Our plan is to start in February if every things go well.

Nice job! I would never blame someone for using a nailgun. I had about 3 1/2 weeks to build a cabin shell and without the nailgun it would not have happened. It's not just the framing, but all the nails in the subfloor and sheathing, etc. Thousands of nails.

Too many DIYers tend to try and dazzle their audience with some semblance of know-how with their incessant verbal babble about what they are doing, how they are doing, and their attempt at leaving their audience with the notion that they are experienced. So good to watch someone who has experience building. Sometimes it hurts my brain to watch struggling DIYers who have no idea what they are doing. Personally, I have a bit more than 30 years of building experience, 10 years in the field building apartment buildings and some commercial; 21 years in an Architect firm designing and drafting commercial properties.

It is 62 acres and we are the beginning stages but we are newbies... city slickers so it's all new to us. Just a thought, the square that you cut out of your countertop so your sink would fit, use that square that you cut out sand it down, clean it up and that would be a fantastic cutting board for your cabin!!

a couple years I bought a 15 acre piece of property in Northern New Mexico in the foothills of the Manzano Mountains, No New Mexico isn't just a desert wasteland...... in fact almost half of the state is mountains and the valleys. I'm planning on building a 16x24 (384 sq feet) cabin/tiny home to live full time in when I retire in a few months, I'm really considering buying a Tuff Shed from Home Depot. I know, I know... I can build one myself cheaper, Yes I can but I can't build one for much cheaper plus it's more convient, I can have one put in place and literally sleep in that night and continue to sleep in while I finish it out, i don't have to wait for the weather to get in dried in, it comes dried in.

Wonderful! This is the kind of cabin we want to build on our homestead! What is the little tube you use in the concrete?

You're the only builder who put down a vapor barrier below your cabin flooring. You built a lovely cabin. I love houses with steep roof lines too. How do you determine how to cut the wood to achieve this type of roof?

I know some people with paper on a wall and their ok but in bad situation they would be the last ones I would go to. The roof also kept me thinking all the time. Now that it's done I can say that was the worst part of the build so far. Almost fell off twice. An old guy did give me a tip about how to walk on the metal without sliding. He said spray soda on the panels when it dries its sticky. That worked great on the 9 12 pitch and the first rain washed it off.

Hi. Nice job. What's the black plastic for? I woulda nailed 1/4" hardware cloth underneath your support beams to keep critters out.

You should have cleared the trees back farther for two reasons; 1. Fire safety, fire block in case of forest fire. 2. Storm safety, storms can drop a tree on your cabin.

Have you ever had issues with the metal roofing dripping condensation during the wetter/humid months? Or just from there being a bunch of people in there during the winter? In the process of building my 24x10 offgrid cabin. Wondering if I should lay down some tar paper under the metal roofing to prevent this?

Great delivery on the video congrats. Hope you take into consideration double bubble insulation for the metal roof or at least a vapor barrier. They sweat alot especially in fall, cool mornings warm afternoons.

What part of the footings did you use to get all 8 footings level to each other before pouring concrete? Did you just make sure all your boxes were level to each other?
