Off-Grid Prospector-Style Tent: A Tiny House Alternative

In this video, we give you a tour of a prospector-style, 4-season tent that is completely off-grid. The tent is built with two layers of weather-proof canvas stretched over a wooden frame and is equipped with a double combustion wood stove for heat, a solar panel to power 1 LED light, and a propane fridge to keep food cool during the summer months.
The tent is separated into 4 quarters: dining room, kitchen, sleeping area, and woodstove/living room. There's also an outhouse, barbecue and picnic table outside.
Measuring approx. 15 x 18 feet, this tent would make a very comfortable tiny house, although we would make a couple of changes to make it more liveable over the long-term, including the addition of an indoor composting toilet, a couch in front of the fireplace, larger windows, and a more powerful solar system so that we could power more than 1 light.
This tent is a rental unit in Gatineau Park that can be accessed by snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in Winter, or hiking/cycling in Summer. For more information about renting a 4-season tent (or yurt) in Gatineau Park, visit the NCC website here:

i grew up in ontario with no indoor plumbing and an outhouse. the trick is to use a chamberpot and the outhouse is where you go to empty it, rather than yourself. this means you only have to go to the outhouse 1x daily, never at night. chamberpot needs a lid and can be kept outside the door till you need it. keep the seat inside, though. lol

Where I used to live we had an outhouse... It was very cold at night :( I live in Australia, to make it worse, and once I there was a snake on the toilet seat... I thought it was just a decoration for some reason.. So I touched it... Luckily it wasn't poisonous and it slithered away as soon as I touched it but this is the reason that my dad installed a toilet indoors 😂

To anyone wondering, these tents are very popular all year round, and they are used for one or two night stays where you ski or snowshoe in (from a central parking area or park office). They are not residential living spaces, but camping areas. Firewood, fuel and water are typically included in the rental fee. That’s why there’s so little for storage and and outhouse.

I have lived in northern Minnesota through 2 winters in a much more primitive / smaller structure than this one. This tent is really very well thought out, appointed, and executed. Whoever built it did a beautiful job.

+Gachitadamunga The outhouse in winter seems like a major hardship to most who have never tried it, but in use I found that situation to be a very minor difference in comfort from standard indoor toilets. You DO need to keep a large plastic bucket and lid inside the shelter though, and in that way you have something inside and close by, which you can use in case of illness, or emergency.

+Larned Justin we were not thrilled about the outhouse being so far away either, especially since it was -20 Celsius at least one of the nights we were there. Other than that, it was a very cool tent and a lovely off-grid experience. Thanks for watching!

love the tent. Thanks for showing us around. One of the reasons for a double tent layer is that if the tent is touching the frame, the rain would migrate into the interior. A tent over "the tent" eliminates this and, as you say, helps with insulation. Very nicely engineered. Love the cascading bunks and the kitchen space. I'm always prepared, like you, with my fixin's. Your soup looks awesome.

Many kids summer camps have this style of "tabin" called this as they are a combo of Tent and Cabin. Very cool - I'd love one!

I wish I could go back in time, to show Americans living in small wood shacks, about the size of this tent, a future where people got so tired of living in lavish suburban homes just a few generations later, that they all desired “tiny living” again to give their lives meaning, but didn’t know why.

Great video as always! Three big cons with that set-up: no bathroom inside, no running water and you can't really properly cook indoors. Seems more like a better place for an occasional hunting lodge.

+CycleCruza People cooked on wooden stoves like that for a really, really long time. It's very doable. Just takes an adjustment. You're right about running water and the outdoor restroom. I imagine there are all kinds of water issues with, you know, freezing. I think I would want to consider a smaller scale composting toilet. But, that would require more maintenance on the part of the people who rent the property. I'm a little surprised they don't have a little more solar capacity and more LED lighting, though, I'm not sure how many hours of sunlight they get per day that far north.

When I was a teen in 1968 , I went to camp in New Hampshire. We lived in tents like these ,but not as nice. War surplus tents with a raised wood floor and one light bulb ! And we loved it ,four kids in each tent and all the mosquitoes you wanted .

The old jug for liquids and the cat litter/bag/ bucket method for solids covers that problem. Any vandweller has that down. And you don't need running water for dishes. Spray bottles filled with vinegar or vinegar/water mix, or soap/water mix do an excellent job. The trick is to wipe everything thoroughly immediately after use, spray, sit a few minutes and then wipe dry. Works really well in small spaces with a limited water supply. And plenty of hand sanitizers for use as personal germ control on hands.

I always enjoy your videos ! That remind me of a place in Charlevoix that we rent at la Ferme 5 étoiles (near Tadoussac). It was a Yurt with a direct view at the saguenay river. We had to walk (in snowshoe) for 3-5 km from the farm to the Yurt and it was awsome. No BBQ, but we ate sushi that night ! Nice peoples, great little zoo. Parking spot near is available. Love it, just like you did ! Thanks again !!!

Thanks for reviewing this tent created by a very thoughtful person--especially the spatial arrangements and the ingenious wooden bed furniture. I assume it's a tent for the sake of portability, because if it were intended for permanent living, one would reduce the steep wall angles and use closed cell sprayed urethane to insulate the walls with much heat to gain, and windows to allow. Myself, I'm thinking more along the lines of tropical living!

The proper name for this tent if im not mistaken is an oTENTik. It is made by a company called Biome, based out of Quebec, Canada.

While AWESOME it needs a few modification: Stove in the center for better heat distribution (and massive insulation...), cellar for keeping produce fresh instead of fossil fuel powered fridge (if we are talking about full time living) and composting toilet... somewhere. rain collection would be very easy with the shape of the roof too!

Exploring Alternatives If cellars worked for hundreds of years, I'm sure we can still make them work. It just needs effort. You could use rain water o produce blocks of ice to keep the cellar cold all year. ;)

i wonder if they could've made an extra outhouse partition outside of the kitchen door(turning the window into a door first) with it's own ventilation flap. would make a lot more sense and soak in a bit of the heat from the main tent so the temperature is slightly above outdoor temp.

Off-Grid simply means they are not connected to a cities power/water/sewer supply. It doesn't mean primitive, with no modern conveniences, so a fridge and BBQ are perfectly fine. You can be off-grid and have electric, tv, running water, or just about anything you can on-grid. You just are not relying on the power company to supply your electricity.

I like the staggered bunk beds. Also, if you get too cold during the night, you could move to a higher bunk to be where the heat has risen.

Yup, Parks Canada has the exact same structure (minus the stove etc) in it's national parks and they call them oTENTiks. They are not bear proof.

Bears would definitely be an issue...hungry bear + smell of food + material walls = trouble.. Why tempt the bear, and then it will be the one to be shot!....and you may not be around.....it's happened before.

Lovely space! Based on my experience living in a tiny yurt for years, I'd have a sunshine window in the sloping roof and put a shower at the back of where the kitchen is. Also the stove needs a rock wall round the back and sides to take up heat and give it back slowly when the fire burns down and the tent needs thick insulation between the layers.

thanks for sharing this. I love tents, and this one is exceptionally beautiful. I live in a DIY ger I made in Alaska, and the one I made here in 2007 was covered with cut canvas from the Girl Scout wall tent I stayed in the winter of 2006. If my set up would have been as nice as this tent I'm sure I'd have never built my ger or found my true love, Gertee. :) Looking forward to your yurt tour, you have good hosting skills.

I wonder how much something like this would cost to buy? I really want a tiny house. I'm not trying to make anyone feel sorry for me. Lol. But I am fighting cancer and I've promised myself some sort of tiny house once I have completed my stem cell transplant. Sort of a goal to keep me fighting. I really, really want to change so much of my lifestyle and I want a tiny house. I'm in cold Canada, so I need something that will keep me warm in the winter. :)

a small cabin build like this would be more expensive. Also more difficult to transport the materials to the site. Unless you do everything with man power cutting and nailing it together will require power.
