EDIT: my high resolution photo is here photos.app.goo...
As you can see, it doesn't take much to terrify the horse into a dangerous situation. This is still a problem.
So, why does someone need to walk 5 dogs at a time? ...and why do they feel that there is nothing wrong with having them ALL off-leash?
It seems that dogs are straight-up prohibited on the beaches. I don't particularly agree with that, but perhaps if you're not Cesar Millan, keeping them under control with a leash is a good idea?
I filmed this from the clifftop overlooking the beach, and was taking still pictures and missed filming the first part where all the dogs rushed the horse. I have a couple pictures instead: photos.app.goo...
Half Moon Bay State Beach, park site:
www.parks.ca.go...
("Dogs are prohibited on the beaches at all times. Dogs are permitted in the campground, in the day-use picnic areas, and on the Coastal Trail, provided they are controlled with a leash of no more than six feet at all times. ")
As a side note, it also seems that riding horses on the beach is also not allowed. If that was enforced, would that alone have prevented this confrontation? Probably not.
And, to see if you were paying attention, what is the woman riding the horse carrying?
You guessed it.

The rider pulling on the reins in shanked bit of all things wasnt helping the situation either! Notice him toss his head and avoid the bit pain. Shanked bits arent meant to be pulled on they are meant for real western riding where just slightly lifting a rein will get a quick response from a well trained horse. Pulling back on both reins is a recipe for disaster too, she should've circled the horse or let him walk away. Pulling on both reins in a basic snaffle can cause a rear response, never mind a shanked bit! Pulling at all in a shanked bit is a ticking time bomb! Dont know if she's maybe trying to look "more western" or whatever but when shit hits the fan shanked bits make everything worse.

I don't know what video you watched, but to me it looked like the rider was doing nothing wrong, and the horse was tossing his head to try and scare away the dog, or to tell him to back the fuck off. The rider didn't even tug on the reins in my opinion. The horse just looked a little excited and frightened.
@sugarsnap3859

Kelsie Beaulieu The horse wasn't having his mouth pulled. The rider was very calm and dealt with the situation well by allowing the horse to investigate what was scaring him rather than encouraging the animal's fear by turning it away. It does look as if the man is pulling the reins, but if you watch his hands remain neutral and don't pull back or tighten. I do agree with you on bit choice however. No need to get so irrational and crabby. If you open your eyes and close your mind to your negative predisposition about bits, you will see what is actually there. The dog owner was not at fault here, however it is debatable as to whether someone can control that many dogs off leash. Have a good one :)

sugarsnap The rider was calm and his hands are steady, but from the very beginning to where he starts to walk the horse off at the end, those shanks weren't in a neutral position, and those reins were fairly taught, there's no slack in them - I wonder if people are confusing the lead with the reins? I agree with Kelsie Beaulieu , the rider is causing the head tossing and so escalating the situation. I think both parties are 'at fault' for having not fully trained animals out in public, but if we're just debating whether the rider was causing the horse pain with the bit? Yes he was.

Bits are not necessary, when will people learn that all bits cause pain. If a person cannot gentle or ride a horse in a bitless bridle then there is no true bond between them, google the effects of a bit in a horses mouth, please

All I can think watching these situations is how lucky the dogs are the horse wasn't more dominant. It just takes one step too close to a frightened horse to get a pretty powerful kick right in the melon.

This happened to us once. It was in the less busy part of the year when we're allowed to go ride down the beach, though dogs typically aren't permitted without a leash at all. Anyways, this massive black dog came running up barking and snapping at their heels; Lucky almost kicked the blighter in the head. The owners just stood there talking without so much as a care in the world. One of them even thought it was funny when Allyson screamed and started laughing. People like that just tick me off. It's a delicate balance, horses and dogs. On one hand they can have such a wonderful partnership, but on the other it can blow up horrendously.

That must have been harrowing! When I saw this encounter between the dogs and the horse, I was so afraid it would end badly; fortunately it didn't, but having witnessed it, I appreciate the point you you make: _a delicate balance, horses and dogs_ ...common sense! PS did you notice the rider is, herself, carrying a little lap dog?

Very. I make a point to carry stream pepper spray with me from now on. Not that I want to use it, of course. But as an absolute last resort, if it's become clear that the animal is intent on physically harming my horse. I know some people carry guns with rubber bullets (or more often than not, real ones), but I think that's a little too harsh for a curious hound. Pepper spray should be fine. Unless it's a loose police dog gone rogue... But that's highly unlikely. And yes, I did notice the pup. A little strange... But I've heard of people doing that with intended "horse dogs". Supposedly it gets them used to being with the horse, when they're still young enough to carry about and imprint.

This is normal horse behavior when they react to something, whether it's a dog, a trash can, an umbrella or whatever they find to be a little scary. A rider who takes a horse out of an controlled environment should always be prepared to handle a little quickstepping and shying away from what is unknown. They are living creatures, not rocking horses. The dogs were leashed and the horse had space and was nowhere near hurting itself nor anybody else. It WOULD be a bigger deal if the rider got stressed out and unable to calm his horse or safely remove it from the situation. This rider sits pretty calmly without squeezing as a less experienced and anxious rider would. A bit hard on the reins there, so my guess is he would have handled the horse even better if he had two hands available and didn't carry a dog himself. I like how neither parties make a fuss about their meeting. This is really not a big deal, and the sensitive horse is alert, not "terrified".

Sorry but as a horse person if a horse is trained properly it doesn't take much to scare it. I ride with a very large bull Mastif and my horse doesn't even budge. If the dogs are allowed on the beach the dog owner wasn't doing anything wrong and had just as much right to be there as the rider. If the rider knew his horse was scared of the dogs it's his job to keep the horse calm. Not the dog owners

What if the owner of the horse doesn't have dogs and this was it's way of introducing the horse to dogs, the rider looked as if he knew what he was doing, he had a great amount of control of his horse. The dogs shouldn't be off leash in the first place anyways, there are a lot of consequences that come to that. If that dog had a more dominant personality to test that horse, and if that horse was a little more head strong, that dog could have been in a lot of trouble. The owner of the dog should have kept it on a leash.

I have a horse who had a dog about 3 feet away from him, head level, in a car barking at all the riders, and none of the horses budged. this was while riding through San Francisco, on side walks and across streets being escorted by a mounted police. there were many people, and people with dogs, bikes, and strollers, and all horses were fine, except for my gelding's one bitch fit (most mareish horse we have, and isn't even a mare), but i know from experience, even the most and best trained horses can lose it on the coast. it just sorta happens :/ new surroundings, smells, noises, and a dog can just seem that scary in a place like that. plus, the dog ran towards the horse. aggressive or not, i couldn't tell by the picture. the coast the first time was enough to make my horse flip. i'm not trying to start an arguement here, just saying even the most "perfect" horses aren't perfect

The owner did the right thing putting his dogs on the leash, but if I were the person riding and my horse spooked like that, I would get off. I am a dog owner and very confident with dogs, so I can protect my horse very well from the ground. This gives the horse confidence and the next time it sees a dog, it might not be so scared (depending on the circumstances, of course). As a dog owner, one of the reasons I dislike the beach is that it can be the worst place for dog fights.

hmm... are you sure getting off would be the best idea?? i mean maybe you could fend of the dogs, but what if your horse bolted? You'd have lost your horse!! This actually happened to me and i definitely learnt my lesson, stay on no matter what. Luckily though, my horse bolted out of my grip within a few hundred yards of my yard and my horse just cantered back to its stable. Very lucky! But yeah, I'd definitely rather stay on top of the horse so i can stay with it!

***** +Megan T The last time a big dog chased my horse and I, I fell off. I am a good rider and not scared of a good gallop, but it happened. My horse didn't bolt, he was chased away by the dog. BUT he outran the dog and then waited for me at the side of the track. When he saw me, he came right up to me. My horse canters to me when called, the same as my first horse used to. I've been separated from my horse a number of times during a ride (once when we both fell into a big puddle and had to swim out) - each time, my horse came to me. Why? Because I don't just ride my horse all the time. I work on our relationship on the ground, I spend undemanding time with him and I play with him. The old fashioned idea that I must stay on at all times (and risk falling and breaking my neck) is not only stupid, it's dangerous. My Mom is a doctor and has told me plenty of stories of experienced riders falling off and getting badly injured, because they didn't want to get off when they had the chance.
@megant4057
@megant4057 10 жыл бұрын
Wow, okay, you sound a little bit touchy... But yeah okay, if your horse comes to you, that's great, but what if it's someone else's horse who you're riding?! That horse may not come to you. And the dog part is largely irrelevant, my point is, in my opinion the best idea is to not voluntarily get off your horse no matter what's happening (if you fall then it's different). But whatever lol, if you want to get off when something happens - fine, on the other hand, i don't like to get off when something bad happens and that's fine too. This is why i HATE commenting on horsey videos, because touchy ass people like you always come along and put everyone down and are so stubborn to believe that you are ALWAYS right.The way you replied was very rude, i don't know if you realise that insinuating that i don't have a good ground relationship with my horse makes you sound very upyourownarse, but it kinda does . Maybe as well as working on your ground relationship with your horse, you could work on your people skills? Just a thought. Bye.

***** I'm sorry if I came across as "touchy", but I have encountered a lot of bad attitudes from "experienced" horse people. They knew everything, they never took advice, but they always dished out advice, whether it was asked for or not. The important thing here is, if a rider panics it will make things worse. Hence, I stay on for as long as I feel confident and I can stay calm. If I'm not comfortable, no amount of shouting "hang on, just hang on" is going to help me.
@megant4057
@megant4057 10 жыл бұрын
that's ok, but I'd never class my self as 'experienced' because I'm only very experienced with MY horse and usually can't offer a lot of help to others and their horses and whatever issues they might have. Nevertheless, I thought I might put my advice in here, although it is just that - advice from a competent but by no means the most experienced horse person in the world!

To everyone commenting on the rider's abilities and so claimed, 'issues', have a closer look and you may see the rider is actually holding something in their arms (not sure what it may be, but it looks a bit like a king charles pup?). now just a few points; 1. the dogs may not have had a legal appearance, but they were there, and off leash at the time, and there is nothing we can do about that. please stop complaining. 2. these dogs may have seen this pup and the horse and gone balistic, it is their nature. no point in blaming the owners. 3. the rider did a damn good job in keeping this horse in control with the situation they faced. people should know that it is common sense to pull back on the reins, trying to gain some control on the horse, may seem cruel, but the horse needs to learn to keep a cool head. imagine if the rider had not have pulled back at all, pulled more softly or released too soon. use your imagination. kind regards to the rider- a job done decent :)

The rider was carrying a dog?! Maybe the horse is fine with dogs but because the dogs were off leash and ran after it the horse was scared?! Horses are flight animals and will run. At the end of the day, that rider knows her horse..? My horse relaxes more if I face him at the thing he is scared of... Maybe thats what she was doing. You shouldnt turn a horse away because the dog will only think its won and chase again, making the horse bolt. I dont understand why people get so bloody argumental! Dogs should have been on a lead if they cant be controllled, which they werent.

People act like the dogs are such the big problem here to the horse when really the rider is causing most the discomfort with that big ass shank bit even though his hands weren’t too bad any little pressure is triple like really why even bother to use it? The horse obviously don’t like it so he’s not using that bit for the horses needs it’s for his extra control. And even when the people moved along with the dogs away from the horse the horse was still showing signs it was aggravated yeah from the big opening it’s mouth lifting it’s head that’s all signs of discomfort. I say the dogs weren’t the big problem. At least with dogs and horses they can communicate where a horse and a big metal bit that just yanks its mouth can’t communicate. Poor horse.

Seriously folks, that is not a terrified horse. He moves away from dogs, the rider pulls the head that way, look where his hands are. Rider issue, not the horse. He does not have effective control and communication as hands are busy with whatever. Really, did you think people would think it was cute, or the puppy would enjoy it. Tha animals were reacting normally. Both dogs and horses, all fine. It's the human element here. If I get rushed by a dog I turn my horse at them and if they don't back of I ride at them. Haven't had a dog not back down when I've had time to do this. Which is what this rider did in the end. Faced his horse at the dogs. Worst thing you can do is turn to ride off as it encourages the dog to think it has the dominance so will keep moving towards horse. Dog went back to owner when called. All the other dogs were on lead. This was a pup. All good. But lesson here. Hands need to be free on horse, car, bike. One thing at a time, mate.

The horse wasn't frightened by the dogs, it was just excited by the sea, the wind etc. It had its ears forward the whole time. It wasn't shaking its head because of the bit, it just didn't want restraining. Many horses are frisky on a windy beach. They all want to gallop freely. Many lazy, steadfast horses become nutters on the sand especially on a windy day right next to a choppy sea. The last thing it wanted was to have to stand still whilst the dogs were moved away. My horse was like a wooden old rocking horse most of the time, but she turned into a racehorse on amphetamines as soon as she came within a mille of a bucket and spade!!

It's dangerous to have your horses back turned to dogs like that. Many things could go wrong. The horse would probably refuse to go that way to begin with. Had the dogs run after the horse there would have been an even bigger mess and if the horse kicked one of the dogs it could have broken one of their jaws. If both people had been paying attention and following the laws set in place this wouldn't have happened.

Keep your dogs on leash, it's not everyone that wants a dog all up in there face. If these dogs were on leash, both partys would've walked away, what don't you grasp here exactly?

These dogs returned when the owner called them. And besides, both parties did walk away. You're the only one with a problem. And, since you can't make a point without cursing, pretty much anything you say is null and void.
