Today we're breaking down an offroad build guide for the Chevy Colorado ZR2! These are some things that you are going to want to keep in mind and some things to avoid when it comes to getting your rig trail ready. 3.42:1 gears need to be tossed in the recycle bin. 4.10's for 33's at a minimum looking at a $3500 total cost add a northern $438 for the Trifecta Advantage + tune. It's a 4 thousand dollar improvement.

Thanks for the ZR2 content. The 255/80 with a level still needs a trim if you off road, otherwise you'll rip the flares off. The AEV 33" trim kit or HiMarks for 35's. 33.3" 255/80/17, 1.5" level, 4* positive castor, with AEV 33" trim kit has plenty of clearance, might clear a 34" depending on width.

i am running a peak coilover at 2.5 in the front and a 2" block in the back. i have flexed all the way and do not rub with 255/80r17 wildpeak at3w's. i also have a set of 34x10/17 super swampers for more fun times than the falkens can do. only rubbing occurs when i'm going down a steep incline at a turn and hit a bump. then they hit the weathertech mudflaps in the front. i have had the aev trim kit for a year and haven't needed it yet. yet.

@@zr2dad5 Has the 2.5" front lift caused any problems with the CV's or boots? My Peak is at 1.7" and no issues, may crank it up another quarter inch.

@@madcratebuilder sorry for the late reply. no issues with the cv stuff. i did the diff drop too. i took it on the first part of fordyce and the 34's pulled the weathertech mudflaps right off. i have since done the aev 33 trim kit but have not been out with the 34's. i also have 42k on the falkens. still lots of tread.

ZR2 almost needs to be separated from the Z71 and lower trims. Biggest lift available for the ZR2 is is the BDS 4 inch. But due to the existing suspension lift over the regular Colorados it works out to 6 inches over the standard Colorados. Max tire size for off roading is 305/70r17s without trimming unless you run 20 inch wheels with the BDS. RF Racing has 37s with the BDS 4” and AEV highmark flares. Alpha ZR2 has 37s with the BDS 4” plus Peak Suspension coilover conversion set to 1.5 inch of extension with an AAL bringing the rear up 1 to 1.5”. LOLTRD has 35s with some form of level with some trimming and the GMPP 1.5 inch body lift. AEV also makes a 33 inch trim kit to fit 285/70r17s on stock wheels and suspension. With a level 1.25 to 1.5 inches and another inch in the rear people have managed to get 295/70R17s to fit with a lower offset wheel.

Informative vid but I have a bison and am going to run stock wheels with the GMPP 1.25 and hoping for 275/70 Falken AT3W with out rubbing.

Is Chevrolet just using the AEV fender flairs on the ZR2Bison to fit the 35’s? Also is Chevy changing the great ratios to accommodate the larger tires?

Hi. I bought the Peak Suspension ZR2 Coilover Conversion Summit Kit w/ Rear Blocks. Diff drop and skid plate spacer with delta joints. Bought it last year but havent decided to install yet.Any info on this? Any experience with wheel and tire fitment?

2020 zr2 BDS 4 inch lift with 17inch fuel rebels 0 ofs 315 70 17 milestar patagonia mt. Stealth front bumper already high clerenced. Did the avs trim kit on the rear of the front fenders as i couldnt get lock to lock without heavy rubbing. All good now full lock to lock no rubbing at all. The rear is good but will see when it starts to flex. May need to do the aev rear trim ? Ordered 4.56 nitro gears in april......still waiting.........:( Parts availability for the zr2 is very poor. Very long leed times. Not real sure how much thrashing you want to do with unobtanium parts. Bds lift 6 weeks , 589fab shock relocation kit 8 weeks. Relentless bumpers 20 weeks +++ nitro gears 5 months and still waiting. Yukon gears not available. At this point you might want to think twice before starting a build based on this platform. Anything with dana 44s under it would be a gigantic help.

Great video!! Will a 255/75/17 fit a 100% stock ZR2 (no level) without rubbing?

If its stock you might need to do some trimming to avoid some rubbing!

Considering getting 255/80/17 on my ZR2, and a leveling kit. I really don't want to do any trimming and I've heard so many opinions that range from they don't rub, to they will if extreme off-roading. Are you able to confirm if they will or won't rub if I do go off-roading? Also, any recommendations on air pressure when airing down if I do go with skinny 255/80/17??

Definitely will more than likely run into rubbing issues with that size setup. The leveling kit will help some so its not so extreme but you will still get some rub at a slight turn!

@@TrailBuilt Just wanted to follow up on what I ended up doing. I did the AEV 33" trim kit and a 1" spacer on the front. I then installed BFG KO2 LT285/70R17. I did some off roading and no rubbing even aired down and fully flexed. Thanks for your videos!

Do the AEV trim kit then no worries. Going to a 33" tires makes a noticeable difference off road.

You can just barely fit a 34-in in the spare position on Colorado ZR2 285 75 17 I work for a massive tire company.

Any word on if a 295/70r17 will fit? With a 2 inch leveling kit ant 1.5 inch spacers?

Closest example I could find is 275/65 on a 2.5" lift, they do have some trimming they did to make it fit however, 295/70 could fit but I would imagine those spacers are fairly key to make that setup work! www.customwheeloffset.com/wheel-offset-gallery/654751/2006-chevrolet-colorado-pro-comp-series-31-suspensionmaxx-suspension-lift-25in

I run 295/70r17 stt pros on stock wheels on my 17. 1.5” body lift and level in front. I started with just the level, and light a trim at the pinch weld, but it would still rub up front, and blow the rear fender flares off when off-road. So I got the body lift. There might still be pics of it on a forum somewhere. That particular tire doesn’t fit as a spare well at all. It rubs the shock.

I was able to clear a 33x12.5r17 BajaBoss a/t with the AEV trim kit with a little more trimming back with minimal rub at max flex. Took a body saw later on as I’m prepping for 35s when these tires wear out. Great video love seeing some ZR2 content.

i really like to see other cars coming from a jeep platform, jeeps are super small body wise so u can run 37s, some run bigger but the axles probs cant do it. I have run 35s on 8 inch rims with 0 offset for 45k miles

I'm running same setup but with the kibbetech UCA'S/ Peak coilover conv. With that tire uca combo I needed to add spacers to clear knuckle of the uca

Lift does not fit tyres. Offset and a decent wheel alignment does

This Chevy needs minor trimming, wider tire, more trimming. 10x33 is very close to clearing without a trim. 4* castor helps alot.

They do not. The KM2 is available in that size though

@@TrailBuilt I am looking for examples of builds so I can decide what i want to do. Right now, i have just a 2-inch lift with 33s and chevy performance ball spline half shafts. I am wanting to see higher lifts, wheels and 35 tires

That's all well and fine but there must be a.serious issue with the gearing when putting on such large tires? But who cares right? It's all about how it looks 😂😂😂

I ordered nitro 4.56 gears on april 20th. Still waiting. Parts for the zr2 just aren't available. It's easier to get a clear picture of a bigfoot riding a unicorn. But even with the 4.56 gears, just how much thrashing do you really want to do? Depends on money and how long its going to take to get parts? It took 6 weeks to get the lift from bds if that tells you anything. 8 weeks to get the rear shock relocation kit from 589fab. And so on and so fourth. Welcome to the zr2.....rear bumper from Relentless ordered in april.. eta? 4 more weeks. 24 weeks total for rear bumper. Would i start over and do it again? Oh hell no. I would go buy an old XJ or a rubicon. Something with Dana 44s under it would be helpfull. At least you might be able to get gears.

Cost $$$$ to play with these toys, gears are a requirement when going to a taller tire. The 8 speed helps as it has a very low 1st and 2nd gear. 33's and 4.10's are my sweet spot, 35's and 4.56 would be good also. 35's are pushing the strength of the drivetrain.

i did the 4.56. give a crawl ratio of 58.8:1 or something. the starting for a rock crawler is 60:1 that's close enough for me. i wish the 4.88 gear for the jeep m220 would fit but the pinion length is all wrong.
