Off-Road Riding | Episode 23 | #PiggyVlog 2021 | Piggy March
So this is sort of hacking part two but the off-road version! It's something I think is really important for any horse but absolutely fundamental for an event horse. A lot of what we do nowadays is on a surface so it's even more important to get them off-road so they're comfortably on all sorts of different terrain and ground conditions. We take them nagging about in the mud, over ditches and through streams, uphill and downhill, and generally just exposing them to lots of different things so they learn to look after their own footwork and balance.🐴🏡🤩
I know I am very lucky to have all of this on my doorstep but wherever you are there will be features you can use to achieve similar things so it's just about making use of whatever facilities you have available to you.⛰🪵

My mare (she was five I think at the time) experienced a ditch that was higher on the side she had to get to. She’s was wiggling much like the grey. She was so good! She always is up for something new and hoped straight over! Love these videos!

I really really want to get back to this... I have a 3 yo I'm bringing back into work but no hacking partner so I'll definitely be in the wellie boots long reining through this kind of ground. Keep ur fingers and toes crossed!

You do have amazing facilities!! I love how you mentioned in an earlier blog though that you didn't always have these great options so had to haul out a bunch.. You do what you need to do and I think that is fantastic!

This is no offence towards you Piggy! But I do have a question?! Why are you riding with spurs on this ride? I really would like to know? Do you ride always in spurs?

Looks like she rides him in a very tight reign, even on a hack. Shame that even on a hack she wasn't letting him extend the neck at all really. I mean being an eventing horse, he is probably ridden on a tight reign most of the time, so if you just did it suddenly and drastically he might take advantage of the freedom and pick up too much speed, maybe even take off. But that's where training and experience comes in. With it being a ride "we do often" it would be nice if she could just relax the reigns a bit during some hacks, or even let him really stretch that neck out and relaxingly lope around on a hack, and be open to it bringing a new relaxed form of riding and relationship building. And maintain control with your seat and body over just such a very tight reign all the time. I mean it's not like I'm saying go bitless on these hacks or anything, but jeez just let him stretch his neck a bit. 🙄 Loosen the reigns. It's almost painful watching him having to be so tightly collected ALLL the time.

@@luckyrainbowrose I’m sorry piggy is an international event rider she has represented team GB I would think she knows what she’s doing don’t you. ? You can’t have loose baggy reins when hacking especially when cantering up a hill What if the horse decides to take off when you’ve got loose reins You then have no control .and this expensive event horse could then get away and be hurt . The horse is showing no signs of unhappiness ears forward and enjoying the ride .

@Amy Rose Collett Armchair experts telling the super experienced, International, Team GB, Badminton winning, event rider how to ride and train her horses. Please stop projecting what you think you know onto horses and riders you dont. Its a training hack, they work out, its not a lazy 'lope', as you call it, situation. @Shivani sharmayou say you dont know much about horses so maybe listen and learn instead of assuming.
