NextLevelOZ Big Lap Gap Year

Күн бұрын

We explore the stark and rugged Flinders Ranges of South Australia.
We walk and drive the geological routes of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, take in the wonder of Razorback, eat some "bush" food at the Prairie Hotel and get a birds-eye view of Wilpena Pound. We do a 140km loop drive from Wilpena to Blinman to Parachilna and back to Brachina Gorge.
In between we do a very quick overview of the Brachina East Camp sites.
Welcome to Episode 20 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula‪@nextleveloz‬ Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.
This channel is for fun and to share our trip of a lifetime and 100% of any ad revenue earned goes to charity.
We'd love your comments, questions and tips. We hope you will like and subscribe and we look forward to sharing our journey around this magnificent country.

Thanks Stephen and thanks for staying with the channel. We got to send some money off to charity this week so we’re really happy that small part of the plan to have our record of the trip, share it with friends and family AND do some good is coming together. The feedback helps heaps.

Hi Paul. Great to hear from you. Much has happened since then. We got halfway up the coast and had to come back to Geraldton for car repairs. You will see it unfold as we catch up on our posts. It was terrific to meet you guys, all the best and stay safe. cheers Dave and Paula.

Did the gorges in my 2004 Camry between Christmas and NY this summer. Epic storms and flooding as we finished the last 1/4. Was epic. Other 2wd cars all turned around but we enjoyed the rock crawling and river crossings. If you know how to drive it’s ok. 😂

While most of the graded roads were in reasonable shape, we wouldn’t have liked to take a 2WD car on some sections, including the river beds in the Brachina Gorge. We saw a few people who were clearly regretting some of the sections in their 2WD cars. Most of Razorback and the main road through the national park was fine but a bit loose on top. A few 2 wd cars were travelling a bit fast on those sections. We were surprised by some of the reviews suggesting they couldn’t get vans in through Brachina Gorge from the Outback Highway. Most of the road on that route was ok if you’re driving sensibly.

I spent 10 days in March at Rawnsley Park station and did so many adventures from there. It was 40+ degrees some days, 45 degrees when I was at the Prairie Hotel!! Love love the Flinders Ranges. So much wildlife, so vast and silent and I felt so small 😊. Great episode thanks.

Thanks for watching and the feedback. It's a good comment thanks. We do occasionally put some trip maps in mainly to show the journey for the immediate day or so the video footage is covering. But yes, if you aren't generally familiar with Australian geography they won't give the broader relative location. And we now know we have a few viewers from further afield as well. Let me see how best to do it to fit in in a way that helps viewers like you as well as those who might be more familiar. Where are you from John? cheers

@nextleveloz that's great thank you. I'm maybe a quick map of your planned route then a regular up date on where you are going or have been have been would be good. Something simple would be great. Australia is on my bucket list of places to go, and your videos show great places to visit. I'm watching from the Isle of Man 🇮🇲, a small island between England and Ireland.

@@johnskillen734 All good. Im editing something for you and others in similar positions (including many Australians) who can’t identify where some of these very remote (and stunningly beautiful places are). Keep in mind Paula and I are Australian and this was our first time to the Flinders Ranges and across the Nullabor Plain. So many firsts for us also. We know where the Isle of Man is. Isle of Man TT and those distinctive Police Helmets!! We were fortunate enough to be posted to the UK for a couple of years when we were younger so got a good smattering of UK geography.

@@johnskillen734 The new episode tomorrow has some maps of the area it covers. I will also do an update during the week showing the map of the journey to date to help with some perspective. We’ve been in a limited mobile area and had a few car issues (for a future episode) so that delayed me doing the mapped update earlier. Thanks for the request. cheers

So what is the verdict with the D300?
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
Still waiting for repairs. LR sent some of the necessary parts by airfreight but the same section sent the other half of the consignment by road freight 🙄🤦‍♂Not sure what they were thinking, apart from the fact airfreight was authorised to step up the urgency, but sending half of the same consignment by different modes ??? So we will update people by post here and in some of the other forums live when the overall issue and resolution are better known, but we will cover it in sequence in the VLOGs and possibly a separate Equipment update video. The challenges of juggling content in sequence vs live! We are trying to catch up to get our VLOG content up to date so its near real time.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned the voice sound recording is very hit and miss. Background noise drowns you out. I have seen others using a mic you clip onto your shirt, seems to reduce background noise and makes it clearer to hear the person speaking. Safe travels.
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the feedback. Yes, wind noise in particular can be the bane of our existence and geez we've had a lot of very windy locations. For most stuff we use a media mod on the GoPro with a wind muff on the mic. For most things on the run it's not too bad, but sometimes even a langolier microphone won't help. We do have some DJI mics we try to use for the set pieces to camera (which we don't often do, preferring to shoot it as it comes, but you will see some in the Tasmania top 10 video for example). In this episode when I processed it there were two areas I was worried about, the wind noise doing the campground walk around - that was a bit impromptu and quite windy so the cleaned up version was still a bit distorted - sorry. On my devices (I tested the processed video on iPhone and the Mac) it seemed ok overall. There is one place in the next episode part where we got blown away at Ceduna - was that the bit you referred to? In the next episode I will include sub titles for that but included it to show just how bad the conditions were that day - no mic was going to work in that wind that day. However, can you let me know the other bits you had trouble with on your device so I can review and see what we can do as we move forward to try - as we do - to make it workable. The clip on mics are great for set piece, a bit fiddly for stuff on the move. But we want to make these the best we can, in the moment for us and to share, so will certainly keep trying. Maybe sometimes I could do voice overs and often if the background noise is very high we only use the video for b roll with music. Appreciate you letting me know. But if you can indicate the bits that were the worst on your device it can help as it might be that my devices are clearers on the checks as well.

Hi thanks for watching and the comment. I’m looking at some changes and was wondering about fonts so we will have a look at that. Is it the thumbs, or the superimposed captions through the videos in particular? With the varying background colours getting the colour right is sometimes difficult to avoid losing the text on the background, but if the issue is the “rocksalt” font itself I’m very happy to look at that as we are looking at some basic editing things we can touch up as hopefully we’ve got a bit better making the videos. We want to keep it simple and the text helps rather than doing fake voiceovers, so let’s see what we can do! 🙂🙏👍
