Join me as I drive my $700 Chevy Astro Van miles into underground tunnels of an abandoned gold mine. I've heard many stories of these old gold mines, I'm curious to see what I'll find on this off road adventure in the desert mountains.

RIP Chris Farley! I'm sure, somewhere, Matt Foley is living it up in his van, down by the river! Thank you for the adventurous trip! It's amazing that a place so desolate and hot can STILL have the beauty and life sustaining river running right through it!

Love these videos. I used to be pretty adventurous and wild in my younger days but I’m happiest when I’m with my 10 month old grand daughter. My daughter had 5 failed pregnancies and the 6th one took. I spend every free moment with her and take her on mini adventures so I can teach her to dream and look at the world differently. Love your spirit.

Hey Hannah, you’re absolutely right, only we can make that change that lead us to be happier in life, and most of the times, it’s got to do with the simple things in life 🙂🙂🙂. As for me, nature, mountains and rivers, lakes and creeks … the peace and calmness you find there, that’s what makes me happiest and you’re definitely a big inspiration to lots of your followers. So thank YOU 🚐🌺

I highly recommend you reconsider your tire pressures when off road. I can't tell if these are LT or P metric tires, (LT tires are superior in strength and puncture resistance compared to P metric tires) but please note on the dirt road sections shown in the video, you can safely drop the pressures down to 18 to 20 psi at the speeds you're traveling. You might as well leave your tires at 50 psi if only lowering to 40 psi. This isn't just for traction, but it is to protect the tires from stone bruising or stone cuts. Rocks and roots are always stronger than rubber, so by lowering the pressure you essentially allow the tire to envelop the rock instead of getting a puncture or slashed sidewall. Just think of your tires as the Pillsbury doughboy and how you can push your finger into his belly......just like the TV commercial, lol. You want your tires the same way against potential off road hazards. This also means you'll need a substantial compressor to re-inflate the tires quickly so you're not dreading letting the air out. And if you get into a very bad off road situation (like super soft sand climbing out of an arroyo), you can temporarily lower your tire pressures down to at least 12 psi to get the necessary flotation and traction needed to drive out of situation. Find an empty lot near your home and practice lowering the pressures to 12 psi and driving around so you can see what it feels like so you'll feel comfortable doing it in the field.

In addition to the jumper, jumper cables, air compressor, lights, food, water, and things to change a tire you might want to consider a Pulse Rifle, Smart Gun, Motion Tracker, and marking flares. Never know if you might run into a Xenomorph or two. Having Sigourney Weaver along wouldn't hurt either. 😉

Your in the mine segment showed how well protected thr roof was from falling rock. Plus the nice smooth floor. That mine had been worked over to either be educational or was recently active. It was just too nice. As a geologist, I can tell you about sketchy mines. Keep in mind, the best rocks are in the less picked over sites so you have to be bold and look for places that were missed by other folks.

Quite the adventure! I would imagine there are a number of critters who enjoy the cool air in that mine too! In the 80's it was thing to convert cars like Lincoln Continentals to four wheel drive. Cool that they have kits to do that now - at least for some vehicles. I was reasonably happy living in the high desert when I was working but for sure am happiest now living in the quiet hills of North San Diego County where I can get to the surf with a short drive.

the Chris Farly SNL Down by the river quote was great. he was gone too soon. glad to see you bring back the van. everyone else on KZfaq (with the exception of Forest) is living out of these 40K sprinter vans, with another 10k of add-ons. so, the make it look like you need $50K to live in a van down by the river. Glad to see you did yours on a budget. that looks like an awesome spot by the way. Myself, i am a Desert rat. drop the top on the Jeep and wheel all day long. then find a remote lake and fish. nothing is a good a fresh fish caught out of a stream or desert lake and cooked over an open fire. that my favorite place to be.

The creek you were in reminded me of a day at a day camp. Our group leader took us to the creek after lunch. We noticed that other people had been there. There were beer cans all in the area where were. Our group leader decided to have a little fun. He took two different beer cans( on was Budweiser and the was Miller High Life) and we raced them down the creek. Budweiser won. I remember running along the creek and suddenly my left foot sunk up to my kneecap. I immediately tugged it out. It became clear to me that my left foot was stuck in quicksand, and quicksand can be found along creeks, lakes and rivers. I wouldn’t drive into an old mine for fear of collapse. On foot works for me as long as I had someone with me. The Astro van worked very well. Do you plan on purchasing more tires? How did it work out for you sleep wise?
